NASA Office of Aeronautics and Space Technology Summer Workshop. Volume 10: Basic research panel

Possible research experiments using the space transportation system are identified based on user requirements. Opportunity driven research areas include quantum electronics, cryogenics system technology, superconducting devices and detectors, and photo-induced reactions. Mission driven research requirements were examined and ranked based on inputs from the user group.

A 100-kW metal wind turbine blade basic data, loads and stress analysis

A rotor loads computer program was used to define the steady state and cyclic loads acting on 60 ft long metal blades designed for the ERDA/NASA 100 kW wind turbine. Blade load and stress analysis used to support the structural design are presented. For the loading conditions examined, the metal blades are structurally adequate for use, within the normal operating range, as part of the wind turbine system.

Basic hydrogeologic and remote sensing data for selection of sanitary landfill sites

Solid waste disposal were studied in Volusia County to protect the water supply in the area. Highlands in this County are of limited areal extent and, most significantly, the sand hills and ridges are in areas where recharge of the Floridan aquifer occurs. This study proves that well drained soils meeting the current State requirements are of limited areal extent. These areas should not be utilized as sanitary landfill sites! Rather, it is recommended that the Tomoka Farm Road site into the adjacent wetlands be extended. The County site on Rima Ridge recommended by Greenleaf-Telesca as the primary waste burial site in the County should be re-evaluated because of potential danger to the Daytona Beach water supply.

Some basic considerations of measurements involving collimated direct sunlight

The geometry of collimators for devices or instruments dealing with terrestrial direct sunlight is discussed. Effects of the opening angle and slope angle of a collimator on the measurements are investigated with regard to variations of turbidity and air mass. Based on this investigation, geometric dimensions for collimators and certain realistic terrestrial reference conditions are recommended for the purpose of solar cell calibration in terrestrial applications.

Some basic mathematical methods of diffusion theory

An introductory treatment of the fundamentals of diffusion theory is presented, starting with molecular diffusion and leading up to the statistical methods of turbulent diffusion. A multilayer diffusion model, designed to permit concentration and dosage calculations downwind of toxic clouds from rocket vehicles, is described. The concepts and equations of diffusion are developed on an elementary level, with emphasis on atmospheric applications.

Basic properties of magnetic flux tubes and restrictions on theories of solar activity

It is shown that the mean longitudinal field in a magnetic flux tube is reduced, rather than enhanced, by twisting the tube to form a rope. It is shown that there is no magnetohydrostatic equilibrium when one twisted rope is wound around another. Instead there is rapid line cutting (neutral point annihilation). It is shown that the twisting increases, and the field strength decreases, along a flux tube extending upward through a stratified atmosphere. These facts are at variance with Piddington's (1975) recent suggestion that solar activity is to be understood as the result of flux tubes which are enormously concentrated by twisting, which consist of several twisted ropes wound around each other, and which came untwisted where they emerge through the photosphere.

Exact Green's function method of solar force-free magnetic-field computations with constant alpha. I - Theory and basic test cases

Exact closed-form solutions to the solar force-free magnetic-field boundary-value problem are obtained for constant alpha in Cartesian geometry by a Green's function approach. The uniqueness of the physical problem is discussed. Application of the exact results to practical solar magnetic-field calculations is free of series truncation errors and is at least as economical as the approximate methods currently in use. Results of some test cases are presented.

Basic principles of material selection in fracture-critical applications

A concept of material characterization which shows the relation between initial crack size, stress range, and life to failure is presented. This presentation is used to determine if a particular application is fracture-critical and to choose a suitable material. The influence of design stress inaccuracies on the material selection is assessed.

Space Shuttle Orbiter crash and rescue information - Basic characteristics of the Space Shuttle system

Major fire and rescue activity procedures developed for the Space Shuttle Orbiter are reproduced, together with diagrams of the Orbiter's ejection seat and of emergency egress-ingress hatches and blowout panels. Duties assigned to the Manager of the Fire, Crash and Rescue division of the Space Shuttle Program are discussed, including training of both ground and flight personnel in accordance with the Orbiter Crash Rescue Information manual. The special problem of providing a means of egress and rescue for the flight and ground crews of the Orbiter while it is in the piggyback configuration on top the Boeing 747 carrier was solved by use of a modified 85-foot articulated boom.

Basic analysis of terminal operation benefits resulting from reduced vortex separation minima

The impact of reducing the wake vortex minimum separation required behind heavy jets on terminal area operation rate was analyzed. The effect on arrival saturation and steady state average delay was determined for various percentages mix of heavy and large jet traffic samples operating under various precision of interarrival spacing. Benefits increase with percentage of heavy aircraft and with precision of control. These results demonstrate the payoff possible from research to reduce the severity of the trailing vortex by aerodynamic means.

Basic results of the medical research conducted during the flight of two crews on the Salyut-5 orbital station

The study of the effect of space factors, especially weightlessness, on man, taking into account prophylactic measures and devices to counteract that effect was part of the program for two flights on the Salyut 5 orbital station. Information from the equipment on board was transmitted telemetrically including: an electrocardiogram; a sphygmogram of carotid and femoral arteries; a kinetocardiogram; a tacho-oscillogram of the humeral artery, perimetric oscillations of the femur, venous pulse and pressure in the jugular veins, vital capacity of the lungs, respiration rate and lung ventilation. Stress factors, metabolism, biological and bacteriological and other tests were included. A comparison was made between these data and pre- and postflight test result.

Mapping land cover from satellite images: A basic, low cost approach

Simple, inexpensive methodologies developed for mapping general land cover and land use categories from LANDSAT images are reported. One methodology, a stepwise, interpretive, direct tracing technique was developed through working with university students from different disciplines with no previous experience in satellite image interpretation. The technique results in maps that are very accurate in relation to actual land cover and relative to the small investment in skill, time, and money needed to produce the products.

Basic mechanisms study for MIS solar cell structures on GaAs

The solar cell structure examined is the MIS configuration on (n) GaAs. The metal room temperature oxide/(n) GaAs materials system was studied. Metals with electronegativities varying from 2.4 (Au) to 1.5 (Al) were used as the upper electrode. The thinnest metallization that did not interfere with the measurement techniques (by introducing essentially transmission line series resistance problems across a device) was used. Photovoltaic response was not optimized.

Basic approaches to and tasks of space technology

The high vacuum and weightlessness of outer space offer great possibilities for the new field of space technology. To take advantage of this, it is necessary to study such physical and chemical phenomena as diffusion, surface tension, heat exchange, and crystallization. The research shows the possibility of obtaining materials with a more perfect structure. Methods of treating materials can be used in space which are impossible on earth. Achievements in material science in outer space will have a large impact on the national economy.
