Gravity Probe Spin: Prospects for measuring general-relativistic precession of intrinsic spin using a ferromagnetic gyroscope

An experimental test at the intersection of quantum physics and general relativity is proposed: measurement of relativistic frame dragging and geodetic precession using intrinsic spin of electrons. Furthermore, the behavior of intrinsic spin in spacetime dragged and warped by a massive rotating body is an experimentally open question, hence the results of such a measurement could have important theoretical consequences. Such a measurement is possible by using mm-scale ferromagnetic gyroscopes in orbit around the Earth. Under conditions where the rotational angular momentum of a ferromagnet is sufficiently small, a ferromagnet’s angular momentum is dominated by atomic electron spins and is predicted to exhibit macroscopic gyroscopic behavior. If such a ferromagnetic gyroscope is sufficiently isolated from the environment, rapid averaging of quantum uncertainty via the spin-lattice interaction enables readout of the ferromagnetic gyroscope dynamics with sufficient sensitivity to measure both the Lense-Thirring (frame dragging) and de Sitter (geodetic precession) effects due to the Earth.

Swampland cobordism conjecture and non-Abelian duality groups

We study the cobordism conjecture of McNamara and Vafa which asserts that the bordism group of quantum gravity is trivial. In the context of type IIB string theory compactified on a circle, this predicts the presence of D7-branes. On the other hand, the non-Abelian structure of the IIB duality group SL (2, Z) implies the existence of additional [p, q] 7-branes. We find that this additional information is instead captured by the space of closed paths on the moduli space of elliptic curves parameterizing distinct values of the type IIB axio-dilaton. This description allows to recover the full structure of non-Abelian braid statistics for 7-branes. Combining the cobordism conjecture with an earlier Swampland conjecture by Ooguri and Vafa, we argue that only certain congruence subgroups $\Gamma\subset$ SL(2, Z) specifying genus zero modular curves can appear in 8D F-theory vacua. This leads to a successful prediction for the allowed Mordell–Weil torsion groups for 8D F-theory vacua.

Scale-dependent halo bias and the squeezed limit bispectrum in the presence of radiation

Here, we investigate the gravitational effect of large-scale radiation perturbations on small-scale structure formation. In addition to making the growth of matter perturbations scale dependent, the free streaming of radiation also affects the coupling between structure formation at small and large scales. We study this using separate universe N -body simulations to compute the (isotropized) squeezed limit matter bispectrum and the linear halo bias. Our results show that the scale dependence in the growth of long-wavelength matter perturbations, caused by radiation, translates into these quantities acquiring a nontrivial scale dependence at k ≲ 0.05 Mpc -1 . In a universe with radiation composed of cosmic microwave background photons and three species of massless neutrinos, the bias of halos with b = 2 at high k will decrease by 0.29%, 0.45%, and 0.8% between k = 0.05 Mpc -1 and k = 0.0005 Mpc -1 at redshifts z = 0, 1, and 3, respectively. For objects with b >> 1 , these differences approach 0.43%, 0.68%, and 1.2%, respectively.
