A mathematical study of a random process proposed as an atmospheric turbulence model

A random process is formed by the product of a local Gaussian process and a random amplitude process, and the sum of that product with an independent mean value process. The mathematical properties of the resulting process are developed, including the first and second order properties and the characteristic function of general order. An approximate method for the analysis of the response of linear dynamic systems to the process is developed. The transition properties of the process are also examined.

Application of second-order turbulent modeling to the prediction of radiated aerodynamic sound

The Ribner formulation of the generation of aerodynamic sound is coupled with predictions of second-order velocity correlations and integral scale to estimate the sound radiated from several complicated jet flows. In particular, it is shown that the sound radiated from a cold swirling jet is greater than from its nonswirling equal thrust counterpart. The noise radiated from the flow field of a multitube suppressor was estimated and compared with an equal thrust diameter Gaussian jet. It is shown that the multitube concept is indeed quieter.

Transport and turbulence modeling of solar wind fluctuations

A detailed derivation of a transport model for MHD fluctuations in the solar wind is presented. Dynamical equations based on a two-length scale expansion are derived from which the evolution of various wavenumber spectra may be computed, including magnetic and kinetic energies, cross helicity, induced electric field, and the corresponding helicities. Several simple analytic solutions of the equations are consistent with Helios and Voyager predictions.
