Electrification: Mid-term (1985 - 2000)

Electrification, intended to provide a basis for the mid term period of the energy conservation program, was defined as a set of actions and/or policies that leads to an increasing proportion of total energy used in the form of electricity. The important actions within electrification are those with the greatest impacts (coal and nuclear), the greatest technological requirements (peak shaving and transmission) and the greatest response from the decision makers (economic health and growth of utilities in an era of increasing energy costs). The following areas were discussed: increased power generation from coal action, increased use of nuclear power action, improved operation of public utilities action, actions to be taken in industry, transportation and residential/commercial areas. The various ways in which electrification leads to energy conservation were clarified, and a number of specific recommendations relative to electrification were suggested.

Diversification: Far term (2000 - )

Diversification, intended to underly the far term of the energy conservation program, was defined to imply conservation through substitution for scarce energy resources by maximizing the total number of viable energy system types in every sector. The following requirements or aspects of diversification that must be studied were given: fuel mix and end use patterns for various alternative diversification plans, current status of diversification, advantages and disadvantages of diversification, constraints and criteria, diversification actions and their controls, and means for implementing the chosen diversification strategy. The following advantages resulting from diversification were described: competition, crisis-related situations, local energy production, decentralized plant locations, long range energy policy, and environmental overloads. The major criteria by which a diversification program should be judged, the major constraints affecting the approaches, and the road to diversification, were elaborated.

Long-term X-ray studies of Sco X-1

No modulation of the 3-6 keV X-ray intensity of Sco X-1 at a level of excess of 1% was observed at the optical period of .787313d. Evidence is found for shot-noise character in a large fraction of the X-ray emission. Almost all of the Sco X-1 emission can be synthesized in terms of approximately 200 shots per day, each with a duration of approximately 1/3 day. A pinhole camera was used to obtain data and the data were statistically analyzed.

The long term variability of HDE 226868 = Cygnus X-1

Investigation of blue-sensitive photographs of HDE 226868 = Cygnus X-1 reveal no (+ or - 0.06 mag) long-term changes in brightness since the beginning of the century nor any abrupt intensity changes similar to what was observed at X-ray and radio frequencies. From the double sinusoidal fluctuation with 5.6 day period, an attempt is made to derive a more precise value for the orbital period, but problems are encountered and discussed. There exists evidence that the amplitude of the orbital fluctuations is increasing slowly with time.

Long period coupling terms for Lagrange's equations

A generalization of that portion of the work of Berger, which deals with the long period coupling effect of certain pairs of zonal harmonics. Long period terms arising from the short short period coupling of zonal harmonics are derived for Lagrange's equations. The formulation is general so that the results are valid for any pairs of zonal harmonics. Formulas are given to generate the various functions and integrals needed for the results given. Checks have been made against the work of Kozai.

Long term performance of the advanced thermal control flight experiment

The Advanced Thermal Control Flight Experiment (ATFE) is providing the first zero-g flight data for the performance of a thermal diode heat pipe and an electrical Feedback Controlled Heat Pipe (FCHP). The temperature stability derived from the melting and freezing of octadecane is also being evaluated in this experiment. Flight data for the different operational modes are compared to ground test data, and the performance of the individual components is analyzed. Also, the ATFE's long term behavior from launch through September 30, 1975, is evaluated. The temperature control capability of a thermal diode, phase change material, and FCHP was demonstrated over more than 500 days of flight operation and each of these components should be considered in future applications. Both the diode and FCHP transport more than 20 W in the normal and passive modes during maximum conditions. Up to 30 W has been carried by the FCHP when the auxiliary heater is applied. The "OFF-conductance" of the diode has improved substantially in flight. A 1.4 W decrease in backflow has been realized by more complete blockage. The variable conductance behavior of the FCHP is essentially unchanged with time and relative to ground tests. Degradation of the radiator and reservoir surfaces have resulted in a partial loss of control by the FCHP during normal mode operation; however, manual control at an elevated set point has demonstrated the FCHP's ability to provide regulated temperature control to within + or - 2 C. The same pipe when operated as a passive VCHP controlled at 35 + or - 10 C with the same test conditions.

Lunar heat-flow experiment: Long term temperature observations on the lunar surface at Apollo sites 15 and 17

Several investigators of the Apollo lunar experiments have observed gradual increases in the mean temperatures recorded by various surface thermometers. Similar effects were noticed in the temperatures of the thermometers of the Apollo 15 and 17 Heat Flow Experiments. An analysis of the long term temperature histories of the heat flow experiment thermometers is presented. These data show that no change in mean surface temperature at the Apollo 15 and 17 sites has occurred, and suggest that the slow increase in mean temperatures of thermometers in the electronics housing are due to changes in radiative properties of the housing's surfaces.

The long-term intensity behavior of Centaurus X-3

In three years of observation, the X-ray source Cen X-3 appears to alternate between 'high states', with an intensity of 150 counts/s (2-6 keV) or greater, and 'low states', where the source is barely detectable. The time scale of this behavior is of the order of months, and no apparent periodicity has been observed. Analysis of two transitions between these states is reported. During two weeks in July 1972, the source increased from about 20 counts/s to 150 counts/s. The detailed nature of this turn-on is interpreted in terms of a model in which the supergiant's stellar wind decreases in density. A second transition, a turnoff in February 1973, is similarly analyzed and found to be consistent with a simple decrease in accretion rate. The presence of absorption dips during transitions at orbital phases 0.4-0.5 as well as at phase 0.75 is discussed. The data are consistent with a stellar-wind accretion model and with different kinds of extended lows caused by increased wind density masking the X-ray emission or by decreased wind density lowering the accretion rate.

Search for correlated radio and optical events in long-term studies of extragalactic sources

For the first time, long-term records of radio and optical fluxes of a large sample of variable extragalactic sources have been assembled and compared, with linear cross-correlation analysis being used to reinforce the visual comparisons. Only in the case of the BL Lac object OJ 287 is the correlation between radio and optical records strong. In the majority of cases there is no evidence of significant correlation, although nine sources show limited or weak evidence of correlation. The results do not support naive extrapolation of the expanding source model. The general absence of strong correlation between the radio and optical regions has important implications for the energetics of events occurring in such sources.

Thermal interaction of the core and the mantle and long-term behavior of the geomagnetic field

The effects of temperature changes at the earth's core-mantle boundary on the velocity field of the core are analyzed. It is assumed that the geomagnetic field is maintained by thermal convection in the outer core. A model for the thermal interaction of the core and the mantle is presented which is consistent with current views on the presence of heat sources in the core and the properties of the lower mantle. Significant long-term variations in the frequency of geomagnetic reversals may be the result of fluctuating temperatures at the core-mantle boundary, caused by intermittent convection in the lower mantle. The thermal structure of the lower mantle region D double prime, extending from 2700 to 2900 km in depth, constitutes an important test of this hypothesis and offers a means of deciding whether the geomagnetic dynamo is thermally driven.

Short-term variations of the galactic cosmic ray intensity - 1964-1967

A statistical analysis of time variations in ground-level nucleonic cosmic-ray intensity for the interval from 1964 to 1967 is presented which incorporates synoptic observations of the solar white-light corona as well as indices of photospheric and chromospheric activity. Correlation analysis of solar activity and short-term modulation reveals that all indices vary significantly on time scales near the solar rotation period and that the correlation function exhibits a quasi-sinusoidal variation that maximizes near zero lag. It is found that 27-day variations of the indices were most pronounced in 1966-1967, that recurrent cosmic-ray depressions occurred in conjunction with observed solar-wind disturbances, and that two categories of interplanetary disturbance are sufficient to account for the large recurrent cosmic-ray depressions in 1966-1967. It is suggested that flare-generated shocks were the main source of these recurrent cosmic-ray variations and that the contribution of corotating cosmic-ray disturbances to the observed recurrent modulation was probably very small. This hypothesis is tested against the correlation functions of solar and cosmic-ray indices.

Saturn - Long-term variation of H2 and CH4 absorptions

Results are presented for observations of various H2 quadrupole lines and CH4 absorption bands in spectra of Saturn obtained with a coude scanner at each apparition since 1969. The data are found to indicate a long-term variation in Saturn's H2 equivalent widths, a seasonal dependence of H2 line strength, and a fairly steady increase in CH4 absorption during the period from 1973 to 1976. A possible correlation between planetary shading and the strength of H2 absorption features is discussed along with seasonal variations in Saturn's NH3 cloud deck and atmospheric models that correspond to the observed H2 equivalent widths. It is suggested that: (1) significant shadowing by the rings may cause dynamical atmospheric activity due to the occurrence of a temperature gradient in the penumbral boundaries of the ring shadow in the planet's upper atmosphere; (2) cooling in the shadow may be a source of a high-altitude CH4 mist; and (3) spreading of this mist over the globe by advective winds would reduce the H2 and CH4 absorptions, as observed.

Photovoltaic remote instrument applications: Assessment of the near-term market

A preliminary assessment of the near term market for photovoltaic remote instrument applications is presented. Among the potential users, two market sectors are considered: government and private. However, the majority of the remote systems studied are operated by or for the federal, state, or local governments. Environmental monitoring and surveillance remote instrument systems are discussed. Based on information obtained in this preliminary market survey, a domestic, civilian market of at least 1.3 MW sub pk is forecast for remote instrument systems. This estimate is exclusive of several potentially large scale markets for remote instruments which are identified but for which no hard data is available.
