Design and Stability Analysis of Control System in Multiport Autonomous Reconfigurable Solar Power Plants (MARS)

The Multiport Autonomous Reconfigurable Solar Power Plant (MARS) is an integrated photovoltaic (PV) power generation and energy storage system (ESS), that is designed to connect to both alternating current (AC) transmission grids and high-voltage direct current (HVDC) links. It is a three-phase plant consisting of numerous components with a complex hardware and hierarchical control architecture. This paper presents an approach to decouple the multivariable system of MARS using a recursive reduced-order and boundary layer system methodology. This approach enables efficient computation of the control parameters for the Ll, L2, and L3 controllers. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy, cyclic tests in accordance with pre-defined performance criteria using controller Hardware-in-the-Loop (cHIL) experiments are conducted. The results demonstrate that the MARS system operates consistently under steady-state conditions. Furthermore, the dynamic response of the MARS system to various grid events is analyzed, underlining the resilience of MARS in presence of faults or loss of generation within the connected WECC system.

Early Alarm: Robust Event Analysis for Power Systems using 1-D Fully Convolutional Network

This work presents a novel deep learning model for early, accurate, and robust detection, recognition, and temporal localization of multi-type events in large-scale power systems. The proposed method develops a unified 1-D fully convolutional network (FCN) model that takes time series of raw frequency signals measured from a power system as input, extracts distinguishing features, and predicts at every temporal point in the time series if an event is happening and what the type of the event is. Compared to existing methods, the proposed model eliminates the necessity for hand-crafted feature extraction or complicated data pre-processing, can flexibly handle input signals of arbitrary length, and precisely infer the event occurrence time. Most importantly, the model is intentionally trained with incomplete patterns, such that it is more robust to partial features of an event which is common in real-world online recognition, resulting in early alarm for power system failures. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves superior performance to the state-of-the-art, and also shows strong robustness to noise and system oscillations.

A global analysis on the systemic effects of antibiotics in cultured fish and their potential human health risk: a review

Abstract The rearing of fish in intensive systems reduces their immunity leading to eruption of diseases, consequently prompting the use of antibiotics. Antibiotics are currently used in cultured fish globally to treat/prevent diseases. On the one hand, antibiotics used in aquaculture help to improve fish health by killing or inhibiting pathogenic bacteria proliferation. However, on the other hand, they cause multiple side effects. To date, information on systemic effects of antibiotics in cultured fish is scattered and their potential human health risk remains elusive. This review critically analyses and discusses the available information in the literature on the positive and negative effects of antibiotics in cultured fish and their potential human health risk via fish consumption. The review found 44 different antibiotics dominated by oxytetracycline were studied in various fish species worldwide. Antibiotics used in global aquaculture either decrease or increase fish growth and survival rates. They induce oxidative stress, which affect antioxidant and detoxification responses and cause host–microbiota dysbiosis. These changes compromise the fish immunity system, which ultimately lead to cellular damage. The toxicities generated inhibit the fish aerobic glycolysis, suppress lipogenesis and fatty acid β‐oxidation while increase energy demand by initiating gluconeogenesis and anaerobic glycolysis. Consumption of fish treated with antibiotics causes human health risk. Future studies are required on agents to restore dysfunctions induced by antibiotics in cultured fish, while attempts to limit their utilisation in aquaculture production are underway. Primary System Thermal Fluids Analysis Model Development for the Compact High Temperature Gas Reactor (HC-HTGR) (Final Report)

Horizontal Compact High Temperature Gas Reactor (HC-HTGR) is being designed by a multi-disciplinary team of nuclear, mechanical, and structural engineers under the support of a DOE-NE Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program’s Advanced Reactor Concepts-20 (ARC-20) award. The objective of this ARC-20 project is to deliver a conceptual design for the proposed HC-HTGR and support its commercialization as a safe, low-cost HTGR. Argonne National Laboratory (Argonne) is collaborating on the thermal hydraulic design and analysis of HC-HTGR reactor pressure vessel internals to ensure the reactor maintains sufficient safety margins during normal operation, shutdown, and accident conditions.

LID and LeTID Impacts to PV Module Performance and System Economics: Draft Analysis

This webinar is a technical review of the measurements and causes of BO LID, UV LID and LeTID, as well as modeling their impacts to PV project financial metrics. We will first review how Boron-Oxygen complexes form and detail the range of impacts to PV module power ratings over time and across climates. Similarly, we will also discuss the measurements and extent of UV LID over time and across climates. Then, we will demonstrate a methodology for translating these effects to pro forma cash flow models and their impacts to PV project financial returns and levelized cost of electricity (LCOE). We will conclude with estimates of the value of solutions to these degradation mechanisms.
