Chiral spin liquid and quantum phase transition in the triangular-lattice Hofstadter-Hubbard model

Recent advances in moiré engineering motivate the study of lattice models of strongly correlated electrons subjected to substantial orbital magnetic flux. We analyze the triangular-lattice Hofstadter-Hubbard model at one-quarter flux quantum per plaquette and a density of one electron per site, where a chiral spin liquid phase may exist between weak-coupling integer quantum Hall and strong-coupling 120° antiferromagnetic phases. Here, we use matrix product state methods and analytical arguments to investigate this model compactified to cylinders of finite circumference. We uncover a glide particle-hole symmetry operation which, we argue, is spontaneously broken at the quantum Hall to spin liquid transition on odd-circumference cylinders. We numerically verify the spontaneous symmetry breaking and further demonstrate that this transition is associated with algebraic long-range correlations of various spin-singlet, charge-neutral operators. For even-circumference cylinders, the transition becomes a crossover associated with a large correlation length that grows substantially with circumference. Our findings suggest that in the two-dimensional limit, the transition to a chiral spin liquid phase is continuous and features critical fluctuations of the current.

Light-induced electron spin qubit coherences in the purple bacteria reaction center protein

Photosynthetic reaction center proteins (RCs) provide ideal model systems for studying quantum entanglement between multiple spins, a quantum mechanical phenomenon wherein the properties of the entangled particles become inherently correlated. Following light-generated sequential electron transfer, RCs generate spin-correlated radical pairs (SCRPs), also referred to as entangled spin qubit (radical) pairs (SQPs). Understanding and controlling coherence mechanisms in SCRP/SQPs is important for realizing practical uses of electron spin qubits in quantum sensing applications. The bacterial RC (bRC) provides an experimental system for exploring quantum effects in the SCRP P 865 + Q A − , where P 865 , a special pair of bacteriochlorophylls, is the primary donor, and Q A is the primary quinone acceptor. In this study, we focus on understanding how local molecular environments and isotopic substitution, particularly deuteration, influence spin coherence times (T M ). Using high-frequency electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, we observed that the local environment surrounding P 865 and Q A plays a significant role in determining T M . Our findings show that while deuteration led to a modest increase in T M , particularly at low temperatures, but the effect was substantially smaller than predicted by classical nuclear spin diffusion alone. This result is in contrast to our previous study of the photosystem I (PSI) RC, where no increase in T M was observed upon deuteration. Theoretical modeling identified several methyl groups at key distances from the spin centers of both bRC and PSI, and methyl group tunneling at low temperatures has been previously suggested as a mechanism for enhanced spin decoherence. Additionally, our study revealed a strong dependence of spin coherence on the orientation of the external magnetic field, highlighting the influence of the protein microenvironment on spin dynamics. In conclusion, these results offer new insights for optimizing coherence times in quantum system design for quantum information science and sensing applications.

Strong Zero Modes in Integrable Quantum Circuits

It is a classic result that certain interacting integrable spin chains host robust edge modes known as strong zero modes (SZMs). In this Letter, we extend this result to the Floquet setting of local quantum circuits, focusing on a prototypical model providing an integrable Trotterization for the evolution of the XXZ Heisenberg spin chain. By exploiting the algebraic structures of integrability, we show that an exact SZM operator can be constructed for these integrable quantum circuits in certain regions of parameter space. Our construction, which recovers a well-known result by Paul Fendley in the continuous-time limit, relies on a set of commuting transfer matrices known from integrability, and allows us to easily prove important properties of the SZM, including normalizabilty. Our approach is different from previous methods and could be of independent interest even in the Hamiltonian setting. Furthermore, our predictions, which are corroborated by numerical simulations of infinite-temperature autocorrelation functions, are potentially interesting for implementations of the XXZ quantum circuit on available quantum platforms.

Universal spin dynamics in infinite-temperature one-dimensional quantum magnets

Here, we address the nature of spin dynamics in various integrable and non-integrable, isotropic and anisotropic quantum spin-$S$ chains, beyond the paradigmatic $S=1/2$ Heisenberg model. In particular, we investigate the algebraic long-time decay $\propto t^{-1/z}$ of the spin-spin correlation function at infinite temperature, using state-of-the-art simulations based on tensor network methods. We identify three universal regimes for the spin transport, independent of the exact microscopic model: (i) superdiffusive with $z=3/2$, as in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class, when the model is integrable with extra symmetries such as spin isotropy that drive the Drude weight to zero, (ii) ballistic with $z=1$ when the model is integrable with a finite Drude weight, and (iii) diffusive with $z=2$ with easy-axis anisotropy or without integrability, at variance with previous observations.

Glassy correlated state induced by disorder in the frustrated antiferromagnet Tb 2 Zr 2 O 7

Here, we study the low-temperature thermomagnetic properties of the polycrystalline material Tb 2 Zr 2 O 7 through ac susceptibility and specific heat measurements. This zirconate displays a defect-fluorite structure in which the magnetic Tb 3+ and nonmagnetic Zr 4+ cations sit randomly on the same metal sublattice. No long-range magnetic order is found down to 100 mK, although dominant antiferromagnetic interactions are observed and the spins remain dynamic down to the lowest temperatures investigated. We observed a frequency-dependent peak around 2.5 K which is well described by many models of a canonical spin-glass transition. In-field specific heat measurements and the recovered entropy of the system R ln(4) suggest a two doublets ground state separated by 7 K. Comparisons to the pyrochlores Tb 2 Ti 2 O 7 and Tb 2 Hf 2 O 7 reinforce the collective spin-glass-type behavior and the opening for discussions of an exotic Coulomb phase in this material.

Isospin mixing and the cubic isobaric multiplet mass equation in the lowest T=2, A=32 quintet

The isobaric multiplet mass equation (IMME) is known to break down in the first T=2,A=32 isospin quintet. In this work we combine high-resolution experimental data with state-of-the-art shell-model calculations to investigate isospin mixing as a possible cause for this violation. The experimental data are used to validate isospin-mixing matrix elements calculated with newly developed shell-model Hamiltonians. Our analysis shows that isospin mixing with nonanalog T=1 states contributes to the IMME breakdown, making the requirement of an anomalous cubic term inevitable for the multiplet.

Charge-spin interconversion in epitaxial Pt probed by spin-orbit torques in a magnetic insulator

We measure spin-orbit torques (SOTs) in a model system of all-epitaxial ferrite/Pt bilayers to gain insights into charge-spin interconversion in Pt. With negligible electronic conduction in the insulating ferrite, the crystalline Pt film acts as the sole source of charge-to-spin conversion. A small fieldlike SOT independent of Pt thickness suggests a weak Rashba-Edelstein effect at the ferrite/Pt interface. By contrast, we observe a sizable dampinglike SOT that depends on the Pt thickness, from which we deduce the dominance of an extrinsic spin-Hall effect (skew scattering) and Dyakonov-Perel spin relaxation in the crystalline Pt film. Furthermore, our results point to a large internal spin-Hall ratio of ≈ 0.8 in epitaxial Pt. Furthermore, our experimental work takes an essential step towards understanding the mechanisms of charge-spin interconversion and SOTs in Pt-based heterostructures, which are crucial for power-efficient spintronic devices.

Triangular lattice quantum dimer model with variable dimer density

Abstract Quantum dimer models are known to host topological quantum spin liquid phases, and it has recently become possible to simulate such models with Rydberg atoms trapped in arrays of optical tweezers. Here, we present large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulation results on an extension of the triangular lattice quantum dimer model with terms in the Hamiltonian annihilating and creating single dimers. We find distinct odd and even $${{\mathbb{Z}}}_{2}$$ Z 2 spin liquids, along with several phases with no topological order: a staggered crystal, a nematic phase, and a trivial symmetric phase with no obvious broken symmetry. We also present dynamic spectra of the phases, and note implications for experiments on Rydberg atoms.

Probing Majorana wavefunctions in Kitaev honeycomb spin liquids with second-order two-dimensional spectroscopy

Two-dimensional coherent terahertz spectroscopy (2DCS) emerges as a valuable tool to probe the nature, couplings, and lifetimes of excitations in quantum materials. It thus promises to identify unique signatures of spin liquid states in quantum magnets by directly probing properties of their exotic fractionalized excitations. Here, we calculate the second-order 2DCS of the Kitaev honeycomb model and demonstrate that distinct spin liquid fingerprints appear already in this lowest-order nonlinear response $\chi^{(2)}_{yzx}(\omega_1, \omega_2)$ when using crossed light polarizations. We further relate the off-diagonal 2DCS peaks to the localized nature of the matter Majorana excitations trapped by $\mathbb{Z}_2$ flux excitations and show that 2DCS thus directly probes the inverse participation ratio of Majorana wavefunctions. By providing experimentally observable features of spin liquid states in the 2D spectrum, our work can guide future 2DCS experiments on Kitaev magnets.

Quasi-one-dimensional uniform spin- 1 2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet KNaCuP 2 O 7 probed by P 31 and Na 23 NMR

Here we present the structural and magnetic properties of KNaCuP 2 O 7 investigated via x-ray diffraction, magnetization, specific heat, and P 31 and Na 23 NMR measurements and complementary electronic structure calculations. The temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility and P 31 NMR shift could be modeled very well by the uniform spin- 1 2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain model with a nearest-neighbor interaction J / k B ≃ 58.7 K . The corresponding mapping using first-principles electronic structure calculations leads to J DFT / k B ≃ 59 K with negligibly small interchain couplings, further confirming that the system is indeed a one-dimensional uniform spin- 1 2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet. The diverging trend of NMR spin-lattice relaxation rates ( 1 / T 1 31 and 1 / T 1 23 ) implies the onset of a magnetic long-range ordering at around T N ≃ 1 K . From the value of T N , the average interchain coupling is estimated to be J ' / k B ≃ 0.28 K . Moreover, the NMR spin-lattice relaxation rates show the dominant contributions from uniform ( q = 0 ) and staggered ( q = ± π / a ) spin fluctuations in the high- and low-temperature regimes, respectively, mimicking one-dimensionality of the spin lattice. We have also demonstrated that 1 / T 1 31 in high temperatures varies linearly with 1 / H , reflecting the effect of spin diffusion on the dynamic susceptibility. The temperature-dependent unit cell volume could be described well using the Debye approximation with a Debye temperature of Θ D ≃ 294 K , consistent with the heat capacity data.

Kondo screening in a Majorana metal

Kondo impurities provide a nontrivial probe to unravel the character of the excitations of a quantum spin liquid. In the S = 1/2 Kitaev model on the honeycomb lattice, Kondo impurities embedded in the spin-liquid host can be screened by itinerant Majorana fermions via gauge-flux binding. Here, we report experimental signatures of metallic-like Kondo screening at intermediate temperatures in the Kitaev honeycomb material α-RuCl 3 with dilute Cr 3+ (S = 3/2) impurities. The static magnetic susceptibility, the muon Knight shift, and the muon spin-relaxation rate all feature logarithmic divergences, a hallmark of a metallic Kondo effect. Concurrently, the linear coefficient of the magnetic specific heat is large in the same temperature regime, indicating the presence of a host Majorana metal. This observation opens new avenues for exploring uncharted Kondo physics in insulating quantum magnets.

Two-bond 13 C– 13 C spin-coupling constants in saccharides: dependencies on exocyclic hydroxyl group conformation

Seven doubly 13 C-labeled isotopomers of methyl β-D-glucopyranoside, methyl β-D-xylopyranoside, methyl β-D-galactopyranoside, methyl β-D-galactopyranosyl-(1→4)-β-D-glucopyranoside and methyl β-D-galactopyranosyl-(1→4)-β-D-xylopyranoside were prepared, crystallized, and studied by single-crystal X-ray crystallography and solid-state 13 C NMR spectroscopy to determine experimentally the dependence of 2 J C1,C3 values in aldopyranosyl rings on the C1–C2–O2–H torsion angle, θ 2 , involving the C2 carbon of the C1–C2–C3 coupling pathway. Using X-ray crystal structures to determine θ 2 in crystalline samples and by selecting compounds that exhibit a relatively wide range of θ 2 values in the crystalline state, 2 J C1,C3 values measured in crystalline samples were plotted against θ 2 and the resulting plot compared to that obtained from density functional theory (DFT) calculations. For θ 2 values ranging from ~90° to ~240°, very good agreement was observed between the experimental and theoretical plots, providing strong validation of DFT-calculated spin-coupling dependencies on exocyclic C–O bond conformation involving the central carbon of geminal C–C–C coupling pathways. we report that these findings provide new experimental evidence supporting the use of 2 J CCC values as non-conventional spin-coupling constraints in MA'AT conformational modeling of saccharides in solution, and the use of NMR spin-couplings not involving coupled hydroxyl hydrogens as indirect probes of C–O bond conformation. Solvomorphism was observed in crystalline βGal-(1→4)-βGlcOCH 3 wherein the previously-reported methanol solvate form was found to spontaneously convert to a monohydrate upon air-drying, leading to small but discernible conformational changes in, and a new crystalline form of, this disaccharide.

Single-particle and dipole excitations in Co 62

An extensive study of the level structure of 62 Co has been performed following a complex multinucleon transfer reaction, 26 Mg( 48 Ca, 2α3npγ) 62 Co, at beam energies of 275, 290, and 320 MeV. The combination of the Gammasphere array, the fragment mass analyzer, and a focal-plane ionization chamber was used to identify and delineate excited levels in 62 Co. A considerable extension to the 62 Co level scheme is proposed with firm spin-parity values assigned on the basis of angular distribution and correlation analyses. Here, various level sequences built upon states of single-particle character have been observed, and an interpretation of these structures in the framework of the spherical shell model is presented. At moderate spins, two dipole bands have been observed and, based on their phenomenological study, a possible magnetic rotation character is suggested. However, theoretical calculations performed using the particle rotor model support magnetic rotation for only one of these dipole bands.

Phonon dynamics in the chiral Kitaev spin liquid

Here, we investigate the effect of a magnetic field on the extended Kitaev spin-liquid state through phonon dynamics. Using a constrained fermionic self-consistent mean field method, we analyze the quantum spin liquid (QSL) ground state for the extended Kitaev model with both the Zeeman term and the perturbative three-spin interaction term 𝜅. Our results demonstrate the dependence of the stability of the Kitaev QSL state on the field direction, consistent with findings in the literature. Additionally, we calculate the phonon dynamics for acoustic phonons coupled to the Majorana fermion excitations of the Kitaev spin-liquid state, discussing the temperature and field evolution of these quantities.

Equilibrium Dynamics of Infinite-Range Quantum Spin Glasses in a Field

We determine the low-energy spectrum and Parisi replica-symmetry-breaking function for the spin-glass phase of the quantum Ising model with infinite-range random exchange interactions and transverse and longitudinal ( h ) fields. We show that, for all h , the spin-glass state has full replica symmetry breaking and the local spin spectrum is gapless, with a spectral density that vanishes linearly with frequency. These results are obtained using an action functional—argued to yield exact results at low frequencies—that expands in powers of a spin-glass order parameter, which is bilocal in time, and a matrix in replica space. We also present the exact solution of the infinite-range spherical quantum p -rotor model at nonzero h : here, the spin-glass state has one-step replica symmetry breaking and gaplessness only appears after imposition of an additional marginal stability condition. Possible connections to experiments on random arrays of trapped Rydberg atoms are noted. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Random strain induced correlations in materials with intertwined nematic and magnetic orders

Electronic nematicity is rarely observed as an isolated instability of a correlated electron system. Instead, in iron pnictides and in certain cuprates and heavy-fermion materials, nematicity is intertwined with an underlying spin-stripe or charge-stripe state. As a result, random strain, ubiquitous in any real crystal, creates both random-field disorder for the nematic degrees of freedom and random-bond disorder for the spin or charge ones. Here, we put forward an Ashkin-Teller model with random Baxter fields to capture the dual role of random strain in nematic systems for which nematicity is a composite order arising from a stripe state. Using Monte Carlo to simulate this random Baxter-field model, we find not only the expected break-up of the system into nematic domains, but also the emergence of nontrivial disorder-promoted magnetic correlations. Such correlations enhance and tie up the fluctuations associated with the two degenerate magnetic stripe states from which nematicity arises, leaving characteristic signatures in the spatial profile of the magnetic domains, in the configurational space of the spin variables, and in the magnetic noise spectrum. We discuss possible experimental manifestations of these effects in iron-pnictide superconductors. Furthermore, our work establishes the random Baxter-field model as a more complete alternative to the random-field Ising model to describe complex electronic nematic phenomena in the presence of disorder.

The SOUX AGN sample: optical/UV/X-ray SEDs and the nature of the disc

We use the SOUX sample of ~700 active galactic nucleus (AGN) to form average optical-ultraviolet (UV)-X-rays spectral energy distributions (SEDs) on a two-dimensional (2D) grid of M BH and L 2500 . We compare these with the predictions of a new AGN SED model, qsosed, which includes prescriptions for both hot and warm Comptonization regions as well as an outer standard disc. This predicts the overall SED fairly well for 7.5 < log(M BH /M ⊙ ) < 9.0 over a wide range in L/L Edd , but at higher masses the outer disc spectra in the model are far too cool to match the data. We create optical-UV composites from the entire Sloan Digital Sky Survey sample and use these to show that the mismatch is due to there being no significant change in spectral shape of the optical-UV continuum across several decades of M BH at constant luminosity. We show for the first time that this cannot be matched by standard disc models with high black hole spin. These apparently fit, but are not self-consistent as they do not include the General Relativistic effects for the emission to reach the observer. At high spin, increased gravitational redshift compensates for almost all of the higher temperature emission from the smaller inner disc radii. The data do not match the predictions made by any current accretion flow model. Either the disc is completely covered by a warm Comptonization layer whose properties change systematically with L/L Edd , or the accretion flow structure is fundamentally different to that of the standard disc models.
