Measurement of the inclusive J/$\psi $ polarization at forward rapidity in pp collisions at $\mathbf {\sqrt{s} = 8}$ TeV

Here, we report on the measurement of the inclusive J/ψ polarization parameters in pp collisions at a center of mass energy $ \sqrt{s}=8 $ TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.23 pb -1 . J/ψ resonances are reconstructed in their di-muon decay channel in the rapidity interval 2.5 < y< 4.0 and over the transverse-momentum interval 2 < p T < 15 GeV / c. The three polarization parameters (λ θ , λ φ , λ θφ ) are measured as a function of p T both in the helicity and Collins-Soper reference frames. The measured J/ψ polarization parameters are found to be compatible with zero within uncertainties, contrary to expectations from all available predictions. The results are compared with the measurement in pp collisions at $ \sqrt{s}=7 $ TeV.

Search for dark matter produced in association with a Higgs boson decaying to a pair of bottom quarks in proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13\,\text {Te}\text {V} $ Te

A search for dark matter produced in association with a Higgs boson decaying to a pair of bottom quarks is performed in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. The analyzed data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{-1}$. The signal is characterized by a large missing transverse momentum recoiling against a bottom quark-antiquark system that has a large Lorentz boost. The number of events observed in the data is consistent with the standard model background prediction. Results are interpreted in terms of limits both on parameters of the type-2 two-Higgs doublet model extended by an additional light pseudoscalar boson a (2HDM+a) and on parameters of a baryonic Z' simplified model. For the baryonic Z' model, the presented results constitute the most stringent constraints to date. The 2HDM+a model is tested experimentally for the first time.

Search for a heavy pseudoscalar boson decaying to a Z and a Higgs boson at $\sqrt{s}=13\,\text {Te}\text {V}$

A search is presented for a heavy pseudoscalar boson $\text {A}$ decaying to a Z boson and a Higgs boson with mass of 125 $\,\text {GeV}$ . In the final state considered, the Higgs boson decays to a bottom quark and antiquark, and the Z boson decays either into a pair of electrons, muons, or neutrinos. The analysis is performed using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 $\,\text {fb}^{-1}$ collected in 2016 by the CMS experiment at the LHC from proton–proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 $\,\text {Te}\text {V}$ . The data are found to be consistent with the background expectations. Exclusion limits are set in the context of two-Higgs-doublet models in the $\text {A}$ boson mass range between 225 and 1000 $\,\text {GeV}$ .

Measurement of the absolute branching fraction of the inclusive decay $\Lambda _c^+ \rightarrow K_S^0X$: (BESIII Collaboration)

We report the first measurement of the absolute branching fraction of the inclusive decay Λ c + → K S 0 X . The analysis is performed using an e + e - collision data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 567 pb - 1 taken at s = 4.6 GeV with the BESIII detector. Using eleven Cabibbo-favored Λ ¯ c - decay modes and the double-tag technique, this absolute branching fraction is measured to be B ( Λ c + → K S 0 X ) = ( 9.9 ± 0.6 ± 0.4 ) % , where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The relative deviation between the branching fractions for the inclusive decay and the observed exclusive decays is ( 18.7 ± 8.3 ) % , which indicates that there may be some unobserved decay modes with a neutron or excited baryons in the final state.

Measurements of ${\mathrm{p}} {\mathrm{p}} \rightarrow {\mathrm{Z}} {\mathrm{Z}} $ production cross sections and constraints on anomalous triple gauge couplings at $\sqrt{s} = 13\,\text {TeV} $

The production of Z boson pairs in proton–proton (${\mathrm{p}} {\mathrm{p}} $) collisions, ${{\mathrm{p}} {\mathrm{p}} \rightarrow ({\mathrm{Z}}/\gamma ^*)({\mathrm{Z}}/\gamma ^*) \rightarrow 2\ell 2\ell '}$, where ${\ell ,\ell ' = {\mathrm{e}}}$ or ${{\upmu }}$, is studied at a center-of-mass energy of 13$\,\text {TeV}$ with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 137$\,\text {fb}^{-1}$, collected during 2016–2018. The ${\mathrm{Z}} {\mathrm{Z}} $ production cross section, $\sigma _{\text {tot}} ({\mathrm{p}} {\mathrm{p}} \rightarrow {\mathrm{Z}} {\mathrm{Z}} ) = 17.4 \pm 0.3 \,\text {(stat)} \pm 0.5 \,\text {(syst)} \pm 0.4 \,\text {(theo)} \pm 0.3 \,\text {(lumi)} \text { pb} $, measured for events with two pairs of opposite-sign, same-flavor leptons produced in the mass region ${60< m_{\ell ^+\ell ^-} < 120\,\text {GeV}}$ is consistent with standard model predictions. Differential cross sections are also measured and agree with theoretical predictions. The invariant mass distribution of the four-lepton system is used to set limits on anomalous ${\mathrm{Z}} {\mathrm{Z}} {\mathrm{Z}} $ and ${{\mathrm{Z}} {\mathrm{Z}} \gamma }$ couplings.

Search for a heavy Higgs boson decaying into a Z boson and another heavy Higgs boson in the $\ell \ell bb$ and $\ell \ell WW$ final states in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ $\text {TeV}$ with the ATLAS detector

A search for a heavy neutral Higgs boson, A decaying into a Z boson and another heavy Higgs boson, H, is performed using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb-1 from proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The search considers the Z boson decaying into electrons or muons and the H boson into a pair of b-quarks or W bosons. The mass range considered is 230–800 $\text {GeV}$ for the A boson and 130–700 $\text {GeV}$ for the H boson. The data are in good agreement with the background predicted by the Standard Model, and therefore 95% confidence-level upper limits for $\sigma \times B(A\rightarrow ZH)\times B(H\rightarrow bb \; \text {or} \; H \rightarrow WW)$ are set. The upper limits are in the range 0.0062–0.380 pb for the $H\rightarrow bb$ channel and in the range 0.023–8.9 pb for the $H\rightarrow WW$ channel. An interpretation of the results in the context of two-Higgs-doublet models is also given.

Coherent $\mathrm{J}/\psi $ and ψ photoproduction at midrapidity in ultra-peripheral Pb–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm {NN}}}~=~5.02$ TeV

The coherent photoproduction of J/ψ and ψ' mesons was measured in ultra-peripheral Pb–Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm {NN}}}~=~5.02$ TeV with the ALICE detector. Charmonia are detected in the central rapidity region for events where the hadronic interactions are strongly suppressed. The J/ψ is reconstructed using the dilepton (l + l - ) and proton–antiproton decay channels, while for the ψ' the dilepton and the l + l - π + π - decay channels are studied. The analysis is based on an event sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 233 μb -1 . The results are compared with theoretical models for coherent J/ψ and ψ' photoproduction. The coherent cross section is found to be in a good agreement with models incorporating moderate nuclear gluon shadowing of about 0.64 at a Bjorken-x of around 6×10 -4 , such as the EPS09 parametrization, however none of the models is able to fully describe the rapidity dependence of the coherent J/ψ cross section including ALICE measurements at forward rapidity. The ratio of ψ' to J/ψ coherent photoproduction cross sections was also measured and found to be consistent with the one for photoproduction off protons.

Search for charged Higgs bosons produced in vector boson fusion processes and decaying into vector boson pairs in proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13\,{\text {TeV}} $

A search for charged Higgs bosons produced in vector boson fusion processes and decaying into vector bosons, using proton–proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV at the LHC, is reported. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb -1 collected with the CMS detector. Events are selected by requiring two or three electrons or muons, moderate missing transverse momentum, and two jets with a large rapidity separation and a large dijet mass. No excess of events with respect to the standard model background predictions is observed. Model independent upper limits at 95% confidence level are reported on the product of the cross section and branching fraction for vector boson fusion production of charged Higgs bosons as a function of mass, from 200 to 3000GeV. The results are interpreted in the context of the Georgi–Machacek model.

Charmonium production in $p$Ne collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\scriptscriptstyle \text {NN}}} =68.5$ GeV

The measurement of charmonium states produced in proton-neon (pNe) collisions by the LHCb experiment in its fixed-target configuration is presented. The pro duction of J/ψ and ψ(2S) mesons is studied with a beam of 2.5 TeV protons colliding on gaseous neon targets at rest, corresponding to a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 68.5 GeV. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 21.7 ± 1.4 nb -1 . The J/ψ and ψ(2S) hadrons are reconstructed in μ + μ - final states. The J/ψ production cross-section per target nucleon in the centre-of mass rapidity range y* ϵ [-2.29, 0] is found to be 506 ± 8 ± 46 nb/nucleon. The ratio of J/ψ and D 0 cross-sections is evaluated to (1.06 ± 0.02 ± 0.09)%. The ψ(2S) to J/ψ relative production rate is found to be (1.67 ± 0.27 ± 0.10)% in good agreement with other measurements involving beam and target nuclei of similar sizes.

Searches for exclusive Higgs and Z boson decays into a vector quarkonium state and a photon using 139 fb$^{-1}$ of ATLAS $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV proton–proton collision data

Searches for the exclusive decays of Higgs and Z bosons into a vector quarkonium state and a photon are performed in the μ + μ - γ final state with a proton– proton collision data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 collected at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The observed data are compatible with the expected back grounds. The 95% confidence-level upper limits on the branching fractions of the Higgs boson decays into J/ψ γ , ψ(2S) γ , and $Υ$(1S, 2S, 3S) γ are found to be 2.0 × 10 -4 , 10.5×10 -4 , and (2.5, 4.2, 3.4)×10 -4 , respectively, assuming Standard Model production of the Higgs boson. The corresponding 95% CL upper limits on the branching fractions of the Z boson decays are 1.2 × 10 -6 , 2.4 × 10 -6 , and (1.1, 1.3, 2.4) × 10 -6 . An observed 95% CL interval of (-133, 175) is obtained for the κ c /κ γ ratio of Higgs boson coupling modifiers, and a 95% CL interval of (-37, 40) is obtained for κ b /κ γ .

Study of $Z \rightarrow ll\gamma$ decays at $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

This paper presents a study of $Z \rightarrow ll\gamma$ decays with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The analysis uses a proton–proton data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.2 fb -1 collected at a centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV. Integrated fiducial cross-sections together with normalised differential fiducial cross-sections, sensitive to the kinematics of final-state QED radiation, are obtained. The results are found to be in agreement with state-of-the-art predictions for final-state QED radiation. First measurements of $Z \rightarrow ll\gamma\gamma$ decays are also reported.

Observation and differential cross section measurement of neutral current DIS events with an empty hemisphere in the Breit frame

The Breit frame provides a natural frame to analyze lepton–proton scattering events. In this reference frame, the parton model hard interactions between a quark and an exchanged boson defines the coordinate system such that the struck quark is back-scattered along the virtual photon momentum direction. In Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), higher order perturbative or non-perturbative effects can change this picture drastically. As Bjorken-x decreases below one half, a rather peculiar event signature is predicted with increasing probability, where no radiation is present in one of the two Breit-frame hemispheres and all emissions are to be found in the other hemisphere. At higher orders in $\alpha$ s or in the presence of soft QCD effects, predictions of the rate of these events are far from trivial, and that motivates measurements with real data. We report on the first observation of the empty current hemisphere events in electron–proton collisions at the HERA collider using data recorded with the H1 detector at a center-of-mass energy of 319 GeV. The fraction of inclusive neutral-current DIS events with an empty hemisphere is found to be 0.0112 ± 3.9% stat ± 4.5% syst ± 1.6% mod in the selected kinematic region of 150 < Q 2 < 1500 GeV 2 and inelasticity 0.14 < y < 0.7. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 351.1 pb -1 , sufficient to enable differential cross section measurements of these events. The results show an enhanced discriminating power at lower Bjorken-x among different Monte Carlo event generator predictions.

Metagenome-assembled genomes from topsoils along a hillslope water gradient across early snowmelt to late summer in East River, CO

Drought is changing the American Mountain West at unprecedented rates with unknown consequences to soil microbiome composition and function. As a part of LBNL Watershed Science Focus Area (SFA), we investigated shifts in microbial community and transcriptional activity on a subalpine conifer-meadow transition zone throughout the summer of 2023 as soil dried down. This work took place in Crested Butte, CO on Snodgrass mountain, using a proxy for drought conditions. Here we present metagenome assembled genomes (MAGs) for the bacterial and archaeal community at 0-10cm from three sites along a hillslope water gradient across five timepoints from early snowmelt to late summer. 42 metagenomes were sequenced at Joint Genome Institute (JGI) and can be found under the JGI GOLD (Genomes Online Database) sequencing project Gs0166660. Metagenomes were assembled through an inhouse pipeline (see methods), binned using four autobinners (concoct, maxbin2, metabat2, and vamb) and consolidated using dastool. The consolidated bins from all metagenomes were pooled, filtered by completeness (>70%) and contamination (<10%), and dereplicated at 95% ANI using drep. This dataset (1) a zip file of 157 MAGs (as fasta files, Gs0166660_bins_tar.gz), (2) sample metadata file with sample IGSNs (International Generic Sample Numbers) (samples.csv), (3) bounding box coordinates for the sampled locations (Gs0166660.kml), (4) metagenome assembly and coassembly metadata file listing IMG/M (Integrated Microbial Genomes/Metagenomes) metagenome accessions linking samples to metagenomes (EastRiver_Drought_ESSDive_Metadata.csv), (5) location metadata file (locations.csv), (6) file-level metadata file (flmd.csv) and (7) data dictionary (dd.csv) file. This work was supported by the Watershed Function Science Focus Area at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory funded by the US Department of Energy, Office of Science, Biological and Environmental Research under Contract No. DE-AC02-05CH11231.

w18_empower-aids - HIV Envelope at Multiple Scales [Slides]

Being the sole viral protein entity expressed on the surface of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) envelope, the Envelope Glycoprotein (Env) remains the only plausible immunological target. Nevertheless, extreme dynamic heterogeneity, structural complexity, and system size make the study of these glycoproteins immensely challenging. We have utilized the Institutional Computing (IC) resources to overcome some of these challenges in computational modeling of the Env glycoproteins. This integrated technique can sufficiently sample a physiologically relevant conformational space accessible to carbohydrates, in a very short time. This method has been validated by quantitatively comparing to experimental cryoEM maps of the HIV Env protein. We have employed graph theory to capture the glycan shield topological network, pinpoint potential interaction pathways, and identify concerted behavior of the glycans. Analyses of various network attributes, such as relative centrality of different glycan positions, identification of communities, and critical subnetwork features, have aided in detailed examination of the glycan shield. Starting from select structures modeled by the pipeline, we are performing large-scale atomistic MD simulations to study the temporal behavior of this system, which will help elucidate biologically relevant antibody behavior. This method can be seamlessly extended to benefit research in Zika, Ebola and other high-density glycosylated systems.

Measurement of initial state radiation using Drell-Yan Events at CDF

A study of the initial state gluon radiation (ISR) measurement in proton-antiproton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 1.96 TeV is presented. This analysis uses Drell-Yan ($Z/\gamma^* \to ee,\mu\mu$) events in the CDF data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.4 $\mathrm{fb^{-1}}$. We find that the mean value of the transverse momentum distribution of the Drell-Yan system ($\langle p_T^{DY} \rangle$) is a good observable to measure the effect of the ISR. This observable has a logarithmic dependence on the mass square of $Z/\gamma^*$ boson ($m^2_{DY}$), which is parameterized as a linear function of $\langle p_T^{DY} \rangle = (-7.57 \pm 0.69) + (2.15 \mp 0.08)\log m^2_{DY}$. This measurement provides a way to estimate the effect of softly evolving ISR at very high mass region, and it can be used to control the ISR effect in other physics processes.

A Small Warm Tributary Provides Prespawning Resources for Colorado Pikeminnow in a Cold Dam-Regulated River

Abstract Riverine habitat mosaics, including tributaries, are an important reason the Green River subbasin supports the largest remaining population of federally endangered Colorado Pikeminnow Ptychocheilus lucius in the Colorado River Basin. Upstream Colorado Pikeminnow distribution is limited by Flaming Gorge Dam and few typically occurred in the reach immediately downstream of the dam, which is the reach most affected by thermal and hydrologic alterations. However, fish captures and passive integrated transponder (PIT) antenna sampling of previously tagged individuals from 2011 to 2021 revealed seasonal congregations of up to 75 Colorado Pikeminnow annually in the mouth of Vermillion Creek, a small tributary in the regulated reach. Approximately 11% (N = 93 individuals) of the entire 2017–2018 Green River basin population were encountered in Vermillion Creek over the 11-y study, an underestimate of use considering that untagged fish were not detected by antennas. Colorado Pikeminnow used Vermillion Creek primarily when Green River spring flows from Flaming Gorge Dam were high and cold in May through mid-June when the confluence was a large, deep backwater warmer than the main channel and supported forage fishes. Intra-annual encounters revealed seasonal residence times for individual Colorado Pikeminnow up to 91 d, and multiple inter-annual encounters indicated site fidelity. Frequent detections of individual Colorado Pikeminnow in a Yampa River spawning area soon after their detections in Vermillion Creek indicate this tributary may be an important resource for reproductive adults. The intensive and basin-wide PIT tagging and detection program for Colorado Pikeminnow enhanced our understanding of the importance of small habitat nodes such as Vermillion Creek in the Green River drainage network. Understanding and protecting these seasonally available riverine habitat mosaics used for prespawning conditioning may assist with recovery of Colorado Pikeminnow.
