Interdisciplinary applications and interpretations of ERTS data within the Susquehanna River Basin; resources inventory, land use and pollution

The author has identified the following significant results. Identification and mapping of three major kinds of coal refuse targets based on spectral signatures in channels four through seven of the ERTS-1 MSS were conducted. Correlation of the placement of the coal refuse targets with an existing map of their location was accomplished. Digital processing of ERTS-1 data permitted identification of stripped areas including ones that are not discernible by visual analysis of ERTS imagery. Combined visual and digital techniques of analyzing ERTS-1 data for geologic formations have been tried on selected areas of Pennsylvania. Mapping of two major agriculture counties to show land forms, drainage patterns, water, and urban areas were made using positive transparencies of MSS data. Two frames of the same central Pennsylvania area were brought into registration by translation and then merged even though the frames were obtained 71 days apart.

A study of the utilization of ERTS-1 data from the Wabash River Basin

The author has identified the following significant results. Preliminary acreage estimates for corn, soybeans, and other cover types made from classification of ERTS-1 data compared well with those made by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Registration of multiple frames of ERTS-1 CCT data over Lynn County, Texas and DeKalb County, Illinois was achieved to a high degree of accuracy. Spectral/temporal computer pattern recognition analysis was carried out for the first time using satellite data.

Digital processing of radiographic images

Some techniques are presented and the software documentation for the digital enhancement of radiographs. Both image handling and image processing operations are considered. The image handling operations dealt with are: (1) conversion of format of data from packed to unpacked and vice versa; (2) automatic extraction of image data arrays; (3) transposition and 90 deg rotations of large data arrays; (4) translation of data arrays for registration; and (5) reduction of the dimensions of data arrays by integral factors. Both the frequency and the spatial domain approaches are presented for the design and implementation of the image processing operation. It is shown that spatial domain recursive implementation of filters is much faster than nonrecursive implementations using fast fourier transforms (FFT) for the cases of interest in this work. The recursive implementation of a class of matched filters for enhancing image signal to noise ratio is described. Test patterns are used to illustrate the filtering operations. The application of the techniques to radiographic images of metallic structures is demonstrated through several examples.

Image correlation and sampling study

The development of analytical approaches for solving image correlation and image sampling of multispectral data is discussed. Relevant multispectral image statistics which are applicable to image correlation and sampling are identified. The general image statistics include intensity mean, variance, amplitude histogram, power spectral density function, and autocorrelation function. The translation problem associated with digital image registration and the analytical means for comparing commonly used correlation techniques are considered. General expressions for determining the reconstruction error for specific image sampling strategies are developed.

Evaluation and comparison of ERTS measurements of major crops and soil associations for selected sites in the central United States

The author has identified the following significant results. The most significant result was the use of the temporal overlay technique where the computer was used to overlay ERTS-1 data from three different dates (9 Oct., 14 Nov., 2 Dec.). The registration of MSS digital data from different dates was estimated to be accurate within one half resolution element. The temporal overlay capability provides a significant advance in machine-processing of MSS data. It is no longer essential to go through the tedious exercise of locating ground observation sites on the digital data from each ERTS-1 overpass. Once the address of a ground observation site has been located on a digital tape from any ERTS-1 overpass, the overlay technique can be used to locate the same address on a digital tape of MSS data from any other ERTS-1 pass over the same area. The temporal overlay technique also adds a valuable dimension for identifying and mapping changes in vegetation, water, and other dynamic surface features.

Two-inch Return Beam Vidicon (RBV) multispectral three camera subsystem

A return beam vidicon multispectral three camera subsystem was developed and built as one of the two principal sensor payloads for the ERTS-A and -B missions. The performance of the cameras on ERTS-1 has been excellent, meeting or exceeding all expectations, especially in the area of geometric fidelity and stability. The three cameras are coaligned in the spacecraft to view the same square ground scene but in different spectral bands. When the separate images are processed and superimposed in their respective colors, they provide a single false color image containing the radiometric and cartographic information required for the ERTS system. The three spectral regions covered by the RBV subsystem are the blue-green red, and the near infrared. The three cameras are exposed simultaneously to facilitate registration of the three separate images into the final color composite.

The use of the temporal dimension in classifying and mapping ERTS-1 MSS data

Multispectral data from two ERTS-1 scenes of the same central Pennsylvania area were brought into registration by translation and then merged. The two scenes were viewed on different dates, but from adjacent ground tracks, as frequent cloud cover in Pennsylvania made it impossible to choose two scenes from the same track. Targets selected to be mapped included river water, railroad yards, creeks, urban areas, industrial areas, and vegetation. Equivalent training areas were chosen from each of the original scenes and from the merged data. Classification maps were produced for each, and a comparison was made. Scene brightness was found to have the most important effect on classification differences.

Interpretation Techniques Development

The processes, algorithms and procedures for extraction and interpretation of ERTS-1 data are discussed. Analysis of data acquired temporally is possible through geometric correction, correlation, and registration techniques. The powerful techniques in image enhancement developed for the lunar and planetary programs are valuable for Earth Resources Survey programs. There is evidence that both optical and digital methods of spatial information extraction can provide valuable sources of data information the ERTS system. The techniques available, even for a limited number of bands and limited resolution can be effectively used to extract much of the information required by resource managers.

Conjugate point determination for multitemporal data overlay

The machine processing is discussed of spatially variant multitemporal data such as imagery obtained at different times which requires that these data be in geometrical registration so that the analysis processor may obtain the datum for a specified ground resolution element in each of the sets of imagery being utilized for analysis. Misregistration between corresponding subsets of imagery contains both a displacement and a geometrical distortion component. Search techniques utilizing the moduli of the Fourier Transforms are developed for estimating the coefficients of geometrical distortion components of this model. Following the correction of these distortion components, the displacement is located by the crosscorrelation of a template obtained from one set of data, termed the reference, with the second, or background data. This template, derived for the optimum discrimination of the reference data embedded in the background, is determined by the solution of a system of equations involving the reference data and the covariance matrix of these data.

Holographic storage of multicolor information.

Discussion of the merits of the use of holography for storing multicolor information. Holography is shown capable to provide in a compact, easily duplicated, inexpensive, and readily retrievable manner the storage capacity required for the ever growing amounts of alphanumeric, graphic, continuous tone, color, and black-and-white data generated. Following a definition of the holographic concept, the advantages of holography for multicolor information recording, indexing, registration, and reconstruction are reviewed. Special attention is given to display applications including a multicolor moving-map display, a NASA multifunction display, and an automatic-test-equipment information storage system.

Particle track record of Apollo 15 green soil and rock.

Track densities, track stability, and uranium contents have been measured in lunar samples containing abundant green glass spherules from stations 6a and 7 of the Apollo 15 mission. This glass is rather homogeneous in its track registration properties but nonuniform in its uranium content, specific gravity, and bulk etching rate. The major components of a soil sample, 15401, are found to have had an unusually short surface exposure (500,000 yr) and to have been stirred at least once, but not often during its lifetime. A nearby soil clod, 15426, appears to have been brought to the surface in the same event. 15405, the rock upon which 15401 was perched, has recorded deformation features and track densities compatible with its surface residence having begun at the same time.

Image analysis techniques associated with automatic data base generation.

This paper considers some basic problems relating to automatic data base generation from imagery, the primary emphasis being on fast and efficient automatic extraction of relevant pictorial information. Among the techniques discussed are recursive implementations of some particular types of filters which are much faster than FFT implementations, a 'sequential similarity detection' technique of implementing matched filters, and sequential linear classification of multispectral imagery. Several applications of the above techniques are presented including enhancement of underwater, aerial and radiographic imagery, detection and reconstruction of particular types of features in images, automatic picture registration and classification of multiband aerial photographs to generate thematic land use maps.

Discrimination techniques employing both reflective and thermal multispectral signals

Recent improvements in remote sensor technology carry implications for data processing. Multispectral line scanners now exist that can collect data simultaneously and in registration in multiple channels at both reflective and thermal (emissive) wavelengths. Progress in dealing with two resultant recognition processing problems is discussed: (1) More channels mean higher processing costs; to combat these costs, a new and faster procedure for selecting subsets of channels has been developed. (2) Differences between thermal and reflective characteristics influence recognition processing; to illustrate the magnitude of these differences, some explanatory calculations are presented. Also introduced, is a different way to process multispectral scanner data, namely, radiation balance mapping and related procedures. Techniques and potentials are discussed and examples presented.

Measurements of heavy solar wind and higher energy solar particles during the Apollo 17 mission

The lunar surface cosmic ray experiment, consisting of sets of mica, glass, plastic, and metal foil detectors, was successfully deployed on the Apollo 17 mission. One set of detectors was exposed directly to sunlight and another set was placed in shade. Preliminary scanning of the mica detectors shows the expected registration of heavy solar wind ions in the sample exposed directly to the sun. The initial results indicate a depletion of very-heavy solar wind ions. The effect is probably not real but is caused by scanning inefficiencies. Despite the lack of any pronounced solar activity, energetic heavy particles with energies extending to 1 MeV/nucleon were observed. Equal track densities of approximately 6000 tracks/cm sq 0.5 microns in length were measured in mica samples exposed in both sunlight and shade.
