SPS solid state antenna power combiner

Solid state dc-rf converters offer potential improvements in reliability, mass and low voltage operation, provided that anticipated efficiencies in excess of 80 percent can be realized. Field effect transistors offer the greatest potential in the SPS frequency band at 2.45 GHz. To implement this approach it is essential that means be found to sum the power of many relatively low power solid state sources in a low-loss manner, and that means be provided to properly control the phase of the outputs of the large number of solid state sources required. To avoid the power combining losses associated with circuit hybrids it was proposed that the power from multiple solid state amplifiers be combined by direct coupling of each amplifier's output to the radiating antenna structure. The selected power-combining antenna consists of a unique printed (metalized) microstrip circuit on a ceramic type dielectric substrate which is backed by a shallow lightweight aluminum cavity which sums the power of four microwave sources. The antenna behaves like two one-half wavelength slot-line antennas coupled together via their common cavity structure.

Cross spectra between temperature and pressure in a constant area duct downstream of a combustor

The feasibility of measuring pressure temperature cross spectra and coherence and temperature-temperature cross spectra and coherence at spatially separated points along with pressure and temperature auto-spectra in a combustion rig was investigated. The measurements were made near the inlet and exit of a 6.44 m long duct attached to a J-47 combustor. The fuel used was Jet A. The cross spectra and coherence measurements show the pressure and temperature fluctuations correlate best at low frequencies. At the inlet the phenomena controlling the phase relationship between pressure and temperature could not be identified. However, at the duct exit the phase angle of the pressure is related to the phase angle of the temperature by the convected flow time delay.

Material growth and characterization for solid state devices

During the reporting period, InGaAs was grown on Fe-doped (semi-insulating) (100) InP substrates by current controlled liquid phase epitaxy (CCLPE) at 640 C and current densities of 2.5A sq/cm to 5 A/sq cm for periods from 5 to 30 minutes. Special efforts were made to reduce the background carrier concentration in the grown layers as much as possible. The best layers exhibited carrier concentrations in the mid-10 to the 15th power/cu cm range and up to 10,900 sq cm/V-sec room temperature mobility. InGaAsP quaternary layers of energy gap corresponding to wavelengths of approximately 1.5 microns and 1.3 microns were grown on (100) InP substrates by CCLPE. In the device fabrication area, work was directed toward processing MISFET's using InGaAs. SiO2, Si3N4 and Al2O3 were deposited by ion beam sputtering, electron beam evaporation and chemical vapor reaction on Si, GaAs, and InGaAs substrates. SiO2 and Si3N4 sputtered layers were found to possess a high density of pinhole defects that precluded capacitance-voltage analysis. Chemical vapor deposited Al2O3 layers on Si, GaAs and InGaAs substrates also exhibited a large number of pinhole defects. This prevented achieving good MIS devices over most of the substrate surface area.

Longitudinal-mode control in integrated semiconductor laser phased arrays by phase velocity matching

The spectrum of semiconductor-laser arrays with separate contacts is investigated. It is demonstrated that the individual laser currents can be selected such that the array operates in a single longitudinal mode, in contrast to the multimode nature of its individual constituents. Moreover, it is possible to tune the lasing frequency by varying the laser currents. Wavelength tuning range of about 50 A, with tuning rate of about 5 A per milliampere, is demonstrated. It is suggested that these spectral features, characteristic of lasers which are coupled in parallel, result from the strong frequency dependence of their spatial mode pattern near the phase-matching frequency of their coupled waveguides.

Evaluation of high-voltage, high-power, solid-state remote power controllers for amps

The Electrical Power Branch at Marshall Space Flight Center has a Power System Development Facility where various power circuit breadboards are tested and evaluated. This project relates to the evaluation of a particular remote power controller (RPC) energizing high power loads. The Facility equipment permits the thorough testing and evaluation of high-voltage, high-power solid-state remote power controllers. The purpose is to evaluate a Type E, 30 Ampere, 200 V dc remote power controller. Three phases of the RPC evaluation are presented. The RPC is evaluated within a low-voltage, low-power circuit to check its operational capability. The RPC is then evaluated while performing switch/circuit breaker functions within a 200 V dc, 30 Ampere power circuit. The final effort of the project relates to the recommended procedures for installing these RPC's into the existing Autonomously Managed Power System (AMPS) breadboard/test facility at MSFC.

Spaceborne gravity gradiometry characterizing the data type

Satellite gravity gradiometers, particularly the two stage drag free carrier vehicle are discussed. An inner stage, carrying the tracking antenna(s), measures the relative position of the internal free proof mass, and feeds this to a set of magnetic forcers, acting against the outer or main vehicle. As the external forces on the inner stage are low, and as the position relative to the proof mass is tightly controlled, carrier phase disturbances are greatly reduced. The arrangement lowers instantaneous accelerations. It is stressed that gravity gradiometers do not measure gradients, they measure components of an intrinsic tensor.

GaAs circuits for monolithic optical controller

GaAs circuits for use in a fully monolithic 1 Gb/s optical controller have been developed and tested. The circuits include photodetectors, transimpedance amplifiers and 1:16 demultiplexers that can directly control the phase of MMIC phase shifters. The entire chip contains approximately 300 self-aligned gate E/D-mode MESFETs. The MESFETs have one micron-wide gate and the E-mode FETs typically have transconductance of 200 ms/mm. Results of simulations and tests are reported. Also, the design and layout of the fully monolithic chip is discussed.

Reaction kinetics between fiber and matrix

Interdiffusion and interdiffusion controlled intermediate phase formation in metal matrix composites can be of interest for the prolonged application of these systems at high temperatures. Methods are discussed that address the kinetics of interdiffusion in systems that exhibit solid solution intermixing or the formation of a third intermediate phase at the fiber/matrix interface, or both. The tungsten fiber reinforced niobium and tungsten fiber reinforced superalloy systems are employed as model systems for experimentation and discussion. In an effort to impede interdiffusion, the concept of ion implanted diffusion barriers have been examined. Preliminary results on the feasibility and effectiveness of ion implanted diffusion barriers are presented.

Mars surface based factory. Phase 2, task 1C: Computer control of a water treatment system to support a space colony on Mars

In a continued effort to design a surface based factory on Mars for the production of oxygen and water, a preliminary study was made of the surface and atmospheric composition on Mars and determined the mass densities of the various gases in the Martian atmosphere. Based on the initial studies, oxygen and water were determined to be the two products that could be produced economically under the Martian conditions. Studies were also made on present production techniques to obtain water and oxygen. Analyses were made to evaluate the current methods of production that were adaptable to the Martian conditions. Even though the initial effort was the production of oxygen and water, it was found necessary to produce some diluted gases that can be mixed with the oxygen produced to constitute 'breathable' air. The conceptual design of a breathable air manufacturing system, a means of drilling for underground water, and storage of water for future use were completed. The design objective was the conceptual design of an integrated system for the supply of quality water for biological consumption, farming, residential and industrial use.

An analytically linearized helicopter model with improved modeling accuracy

An analytically linearized model for helicopter flight response including rotor blade dynamics and dynamic inflow, that was recently developed, was studied with the objective of increasing the understanding, the ease of use, and the accuracy of the model. The mathematical model is described along with a description of the UH-60A Black Hawk helicopter and flight test used to validate the model. To aid in utilization of the model for sensitivity analysis, a new, faster, and more efficient implementation of the model was developed. It is shown that several errors in the mathematical modeling of the system caused a reduction in accuracy. These errors in rotor force resolution, trim force and moment calculation, and rotor inertia terms were corrected along with improvements to the programming style and documentation. Use of a trim input file to drive the model is examined. Trim file errors in blade twist, control input phase angle, coning and lag angles, main and tail rotor pitch, and uniform induced velocity, were corrected. Finally, through direct comparison of the original and corrected model responses to flight test data, the effect of the corrections on overall model output is shown.

Extraterrestrial materials processing and related transport phenomena

Several concepts for significant cost reductions in extraterrestrial resource utilization are described. After an introduction of the desirability of in situ resource utilization, several candidate chemical processes are mentioned. It is brought out that many of the key processes require fluid dynamics and heat transfer processes under reduced- and microgravity. These aspects are discussed within the broad framework of a two-phase thermal control systems. Another important aspect of space processing is that reliability and self-repairability are mandatory; automation aspects are discussed. In addition to these general considerations, the paper includes several specific processes that vary from solid electrolytic production of oxygen from carbon dioxide, to plasma-augmented reactions for reducing ilmenite on the moon.
