Chondrules in Apollo 14 samples and size analyses of Apollo 14 and 15 fines.

Chondrules have been observed in several breccia samples and one fines sample returned by the Apollo 14 mission. The chondrules are formed by at least three different processes that appear to be related to large impacts: (1) crystallization of shock-melted spherules and droplets; (2) rounding of rock clasts and mineral grains by abrasion in the base surge; and (3) diffusion and recrystallization around clasts in hot base surge and fall-back deposits. In the case of the Apollo 14 samples, the large impact almost certainly is the Imbrian event. Grain size analyses of undisturbed fines samples from the Apollo 14 site and from the Apollo 15 Apennine Front are almost identical, indicating that the two localities have similar meteoroid bombardment exposure ages, approximately 3.7 x 10 to the 9th yr. This observation is consistent with the interpretation that both the Fra Mauro formation and the Apennine Front material originated as ejecta from the Imbrian event.

Nonlinear estimation theory applied to the interplanetary orbit determination problem.

The performance of a second order filter which is identical to the algorithm developed by Athans et al. (1968) for the scalar case is evaluated through numerical simulation of a Jupiter flyby mission. The observations used in the simulation are on-board measurements of the angle between Jupiter and a fixed star taken at discrete time intervals. In the numerical study, the influence of each of the second order terms is evaluated.

High-energy electron-beam deposition onto a hot graphite surface.

The momentum transfer and blow-off vapor yield resulting from the deposition of a pulsed high-power electron beam onto a plane graphite target with surface temperatures of 300 K and 5000 K are examined experimentally. The results show that with identical electron beams the momentum transfer and vapor yield are between two and three times larger when irradiating the 5000 K surface as compared with the 300 K surface.

The adsorption and decomposition of CO on Pt/111/.

A cylindrical mirror electron energy analyzer has been used to study the adsorption and decomposition of CO on an initially clean Pt(111) surface. The observed rate of adsorption and fractional surface coverage as a function of CO exposure are identical to those observed previously in this laboratory by a flash filament adsorption technique. This result provides an absolute calibration of the Auger spectrometry system for carbon and oxygen. Beam-induced decomposition of CO was observed at high incident fluxes. The surface oxygen coverage decreased exponentially to zero during electron bombardment, while surface carbon decreased and then levelled off at a finite value. CO adsorption studies on this carbon contaminated surface showed decreasing CO adsorption rate and decreasing saturation coverage with increasing carbon contamination.

Cosmogeneic radionuclides in the Havero meteorite.

An 87-gram sample of the Havero ureilite has been analyzed by nondestructive gamma-ray spectrometry. The results of the measurements, in dpm/kg at time of fall, are: Na-22, 71 plus or minus 3; Al-26, 43 plus or minus 3; Sc-46, 3.4 plus or minus 2.1; Mn-54, 35 plus or minus 6; Co-60, less than or equal to 0.7, 2 sigma limit. Havero has 77 plus or minus 14% of the Al-26 activity calculated for its chemical composition. When averaged with previously reported analyses of Goalpara and Novo Urei, ureilites as a class have 74 plus or minus 7% of their expected Al-26 activity. The depletion in Al-26 could be the coincidental result of identical 'shielding' effects in three meteorites of apparently very different preatmospheric sizes. Alternatively, ureilites may have been exposed to a lower cosmic-ray flux than that experienced by most chondrites, probably the result of characteristically different orbits.

Major element chemistry of glasses in Apollo 14 soil 14156.

Glasses in a soil sample (14156) from the middle layer of the trench at the Fra Mauro landing site show a wide range of compositions clustered around certain preferred compositions. Ninety per cent of the glasses are of two major types - Fra Mauro basalt (63%) with high K and 17 wt % Al2O3 and Highland basalt or anorthositic gabbro (27%) with low K and 25 to 26 wt % Al2O3. The glass population is almost identical with that of the comprehensive soil 14259.

Photoneutrino energy losses in strong magnetic fields.

Previously computed rates of energy losses (Petrosian et al., 1967) ignored the presence of strong magnetic fields, hence the change brought in when such a field (about 10 to the 12th to 10 to the 13th power G) is included is studied. The results indicate that for T about 10 to the 8th power K and densities rho of about 10,000 g/cu cm, the presence of a strong H field decreases the energy losses by at the most a factor between 10 and 100 in the region up to rho = 1,000,000 g/cu cm. At higher densities the neutrino emissivities are almost identical.

Infrared atlas charts of the eclipsed moon.

The objective of this atlas is to present the thermal response of the lunar surface observed during an eclipse of the moon with accurate position data. The observations were made at a wavelength of 11 microns with an angular resolution of 10 sec, equivalent to 17 km at the disk center. Over a thousand thermally anomalous regions (hot spots) were detected. They cool more slowly than their environs and remain warmer than their environs during the umbral phase. In addition to these very localized hot spots, some of the maria show thermal enhancements during the eclipse. Fourty four charts make up this atlas which are identical in coverage and projection to the Lunar Atlas Charts (LAC) series. The charts are in the form of digital images of a normalized temperature difference which is particularly useful for studying regions of small thermal enhancements. Each increase of intensity corresponds to a 4 K temperature increase.

Twin payload observations of incident and backscattered auroral electrons.

Energy spectra and pitch angle distributions of auroral electrons have been measured in a premidnight multiple arc auroral display by a Javelin rocket containing two identical payloads that separated in flight. The rocket was launched from Fort Churchill, Canada, at 0459 UT on March 2, 1968, and covered an altitude range up to 800 km. The electron energy spectra between 40 eV and 20 keV show a 'continuum' spectrum with a superimposed energetic peak. The center energy of the peak was observed to shift from 10-12 keV over the arcs to 2-3 keV between the arcs. This spectral structure is shown to be similar to the inverted 'V' structure reported by other investigators. The in flight separation of the two payloads allowed investigation of spatial versus temporal effects in the auroral precipitation.

Spectral line absorption measurement using optical cavities.

A simple technique using a conventional gas laser with spherical mirrors having identical radii of curvature in the nonoscillating regime for spectral line absorption measurements is described and applications for laser work are suggested. The theory of the measurement carried out in the geometrical optical approach for Doppler-broadened lines was checked experimentally and conditions are specified for which measurement inaccuracies of the order of 1% for the peak value of the line absorption coefficient can be obtained. Since the device provides a fine adjustment of the cavity losses, formation of the diffraction modes could be observed in the preoscillating regime of the optical cavity.

Apollo 15 green glasses.

The samples analyzed include 28 spheres, portions of spheres, and angular fragments from soil 15101. Emerald green glasses from other soils are identical to those from 15101. The composition of the green glass is unlike that of any other major lunar glass group. The Fe content is comparable to that in mare basalts, but Ti is much lower. The Mg content is much higher than in most lunar materials analyzed to date, and the Cr content is also high. The low Al content is comparable to that of mare basalt glasses.

Competitive evaluation of failure detection algorithms for strapdown redundant inertial instruments.

Seven algorithms for failure detection, isolation, and correction of strapdown inertial instruments in the dodecahedron configuration are competitively evaluated by means of a digital computer simulation that provides them with identical inputs. Their performance is compared in terms of orientation errors and computer burden. The analytical foundations of the algorithms are presented. The features that are found to contribute to superior performance are use of a definite logical structure, elimination of interaction between failures, different thresholds for first and second failures, use of the 'parity' test signals, and avoidance of iteration loops.

The diffraction grating - An opinionated appraisal.

As a dispersing device for spectroscopy, the prism was by 1950 being supplanted by the diffraction grating, which provided broader spectrum coverage, gave higher intrinsic dispersion, and was more flexible to use. Today most gratings are three-dimensional and blazed, being embossed with thousands of identical mirrors. The relative merits of gratings in comparison with new interferometric scanning devices are examined, taking into account Fourier spectroscopy. Problems of grating ruling are discussed together with the status of ruling engines, and questions of ruling with mechanical engines.

Photoluminescence and optical transmission of diffusion-pump oils.

The photoluminescence and optical transmission of the four widely used diffusion-pump oils, DC-705, DC-704, Convalex-10, and Convoil-20, were measured. Each of the oils was found to be transparent throughout the visible region, showed some absorption in the near-UV region, and became very opaque below approximately 300 nm. Both Convalex-10 and Convoil-20 turned yellow after exposure to UV light. No such change was noted in DC-705 or DC-704. Photoluminescence was produced in each of the four oils when irradiated with UV light. Both DC-705 and DC-704 had a nearly identical luminescence spectra that peaked at 350 nm. The spectra of Convalex-10 and Convoil-20 were fairly complex, with several peaks in the visible region.

Visual field defects after missile injuries to the geniculo-striate pathway in man.

The main objective of the survey reported was a quantitative comparison of different visual functions at identical retinal points of individual patients. The possibility to develop objective forms of visual-field testing was also explored, taking into account reports by Frydrychowicz and Harms (1940) and Harms (1951). These investigators had insisted that pupillary responses to light are depressed in areas of homonymous scotomata. The shapes of homonymous visual field defects are discussed together with questions regarding the association and dissociation of symptoms.

Reference data for thermocouple materials below the ice point.

Standard thermoelectric data have been determined for four thermocouple combinations used below the ice point: commercial types E, K, and T and the special combination of KP vs Au-0.07 at.% Fe. Power series coefficients necessary to generate E = f(T) data for these combinations are given. In addition, extensive tests were carried out to ascertain the variability between materials from different manufacturers. Typical wires processed for low-temperature usage often have slightly thermoelectric properties (up to 1%) from those, nominally identical, wires made for high-temperature applications. Generally, type E is the most satisfactory standardized commercial combination. The Au-0.07 at.% Fe material has been examined in particular detail, because it is not yet an ISA standard material. It has excellent sensitivity in the liquid helium/liquid hydrogen temperature range and a nearly linear thermovoltage at higher temperatures.

On the dependence of the two-level source function on its radiation field.

The consequences of the universally made assumption that the stimulated emission profile is identical to the absorption profile are quantitatively investigated for a two-level atom with Doppler redistribution. The nonlinear terms arising in the source function are evaluated iteratively. We find that the magnitude of the effects is probably completely negligible for visible and UV solar lines.
