Solid lubricant film consisting of polyimide varnish as binder and graphite fluoride as lubricant is described. Comparative wear tests with other solid lubricants were conducted and results are shown in graph form. Test equipment used in conducting wear tests is reported.
A friction and wear life study was conducted on the use of a polyimide (PI) varnish as a binder for the solid lubricant, graphite fluoride (CF(1.1))N. Also studied were the lubricating properties of PI thin films with no solid lubricant additives. For comparison, similar experiments on PI-bonded MoS2 and burnished films of MoS2 or (CF(li))N were conducted. The best results were obtained with the PI-bonded (CF(1.1))N films. The polyimide thin films (with no solid lubricant additives) did not lubricate well at 25 C; however, when heated to 100 C, low friction and long wear lives were obtained.
A static and buckling analysis of the ATS-F&G spacecraft reflector support truss (RST) and bridge truss assembly using NASTRAN was conducted. The RST is fabricated from a new material, graphite fiber reinforced plastic. A comparison is made with the NASTRAN results and the results of a similar analysis conducted using the stardyne program. The results of an actual static load test are also compared.
It is demonstrated that there are (at least) two sets of minority carriers in graphite, which are essentially the same for both natural single crystals and for pyrolytic samples. Both materials have similar minority carrier de Haas-van Alphen periods as a function of the angle between the C axis and the magnetic field.
