Validity of disk galaxy simulations

Several n-body calculations have simulated disk galaxies by means of a large number of self-gravitating particles moving on a plane, and have indicated many features in agreement with observation, but also some major disagreements. Some gaps remain in the arguments that results of these simulations represent physically valid consequences of a model in which a disk galaxy is composed entirely of stars. A new formulation of the n-body calculation was designed in polar coordinates, and results obtained with it are used to complete the arguments that the disagreement with observation represents a deficiency in the physical model. The physical process of formation of barlike or two-armed spiral structures from a variety of initial conditions is described; the mechanism is not an m = 2 instability in an initially axisymmetric configuration.

Large space structures fabrication experiment

The fabrication machine used for the rolltrusion and on-orbit forming of graphite thermoplastic (CTP) strip material into structural sections is described. The basic process was analytically developed parallel with, and integrated into the conceptual design of, a flight experiment machine for producing a continuous triangular cross section truss. The machine and its associated ancillary equipment are mounted on a Space Lab pallet. Power, thermal control, and instrumentation connections are made during ground installation. Observation, monitoring, caution and warning, and control panels and displays are installed at the payload specialist station in the orbiter. The machine is primed before flight by initiation of beam forming, to include attachment of the first set of cross members and anchoring of the diagonal cords. Control of the experiment will be from the orbiter mission specialist station. Normal operation is by automatic processing control software. Machine operating data are displayed and recorded on the ground. Data is processed and formatted to show progress of the major experiment parameters including stable operation, physical symmetry, joint integrity, and structural properties.

Procedure for extraction of disparate data from maps into computerized data bases

A procedure is presented for extracting disparate sources of data from geographic maps and for the conversion of these data into a suitable format for processing on a computer-oriented information system. Several graphic digitizing considerations are included and related to the NASA Earth Resources Laboratory's Digitizer System. Current operating procedures for the Digitizer System are given in a simplified and logical manner. The report serves as a guide to those organizations interested in converting map-based data by using a comparable map digitizing system.

Bathymetric imaging

Digital topography has, for some years, been formatted and processed into shaded relief images for specific studies involving land use and thermal properties. Application to bathymetry is a new and seemingly fruitful extension of these techniques. Digital terrain models of the earth - combining subaerial topography with an extensive collection of bathymetric soundings - have been processed to yield shaded relief images. These images provide new and exciting insights into submarine geomorphology and portray many aspects of plate tectonic physiography in a manner not previously possible.

Nitriding of titanium and titanium: 8 percent aluminum, 1 percent molybdenum, 1 percent vanadium alloy with an ion-beam source

Titanium and Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V alloy were nitrided with an ion-beam source of nitrogen or argon and nitrogen at a total pressure of 2 x 10 to the minus 4th power to 10 x 10 to the minus 4th power torr. The treated surface was characterized by surface profilometry, X-ray diffractometry, Auger electron spectroscopy and microhardness measurements. The tetragonal Ti2N phase formed in pure titanium and Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V alloy with traces of AlN in the alloy. Two opposite processes competed during the ion-beam-nitriding process: (1) formation of nitrides in the surface layer and (2) sputtering of the nitrided layers by the ion beam. The highest surface hardnesses, about 500 kg/sq mm in titanium and 800 kg/sq mm in Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V, were obtained by ion nitriding with an ion beam of pure nitrogen at 4.2 x 10 to the minus 4th power torr at a beam voltage of 1000 V.

X-ray illumination of globular cluster puzzles

Globular clusters are thought to be among the oldest objects in the Galaxy, and provide, in this connection, important clues for determining the age and process of formation of the Galaxy. The present investigation is concerned with puzzles relating to the X-ray emission of globular clusters, taking into account questions regarding the location of X-ray emitting clusters (XEGC) unusually near the galactic plane and/or galactic center. An adopted model is discussed for the nature, formation, and lifetime of X-ray sources in globular clusters. An analysis of the available data is conducted in connection with a search for correlations between binary formation time scales, central relaxation times, galactic locations, and X-ray emission. The positive correlation found between distance from galactic center and two-body binary formation time for globular clusters, explanations for this correlation, and the hypothesis that X-ray sources in globular clusters require binary star systems provide a possible explanation of the considered puzzles.

Photochemical processes in the inner coma

Models for the inner-coma chemistry of comets are reviewed. The physics relevant to the coma's chemistry is summarized, and the interaction of solar radiation with the coma is described, along with photolytic and chemical processes. The formation and destruction of several observed species are traced through a chemical reaction network, and model results are compared with observations. The species considered include CN, C2, C3, NH2, CH, CO, CO(+), OH, H2O, HCO, C2H4, and C2H3. The models most consistent with observations are shown to indicate that only trace amounts (2% in all) of molecules bearing CN, C2, C3, and NH2 can be present in the nucleus of a comet.

Deep space optical communication via relay satellite

The application of optical communications for a deep space link via an earth-orbiting relay satellite is discussed. The system uses optical frequencies for the free-space channel and RF links for atmospheric transmission. The relay satellite is in geostationary orbit and contains the optics necessary for data processing and formatting. It returns the data to earth through the RF terrestrial link and also transmits an optical beacon to the satellite for spacecraft return pointing and for the alignment of the transmitting optics. Future work will turn to modulation and coding, pointing and tracking, and optical-RF interfacing.

Early results from the Infrared Astronomical Satellite

The discoveries made with the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) are reviewed. Findings on large-scale extended infrared emission associated with the solar system and the Galaxy and medium-scale extended infrared emission associated with zodiacal dust bands and infrared cirrus clouds are described. Comets have been found to be much dustier than previously thought. Solid material orbits Vega and other stars, and emission from cool interstellar material has been traced throughout the Galaxy up to the poles. Stars in the process of formation have been detected. The far-infrared sky away from the galactic plane has been found to be dominated by spiral galaxies, some of which emit more than 50 percent and as much as 98 percent of their energy in the infrared.

Preliminary scientific results from the first six months of the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS)

The Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) was successfully launched on January 25, 1983. This paper presents results based on analysis of early scientific data returned from IRAS. Among the early results of IRAS are the discovery of comet IRAS-Araki-Alcock, evidence for a shell of large particles around the nearby bright star Vega, detection of stars in the process of formation, and detection of many infrared bright galaxies. These early results demonstrate that the IRAS data will be a treasure chest for astronomers for years to come.

Data reduction, management, and analysis software for CID

In an overview of the Data Reduction System, three major steps are examined. First, the raw data tapes were selected from the onboard recorders. These tapes should provide the best quality data for the data reduction software system. These tapes contained 352 channels of data, plus the monitor channels recorded in 8 bit Pulsed Coded Modulation (PCM) words. The next step consists of transcribing the PCM tapes from 8 bit serial digital data to 8 bit parallel digital data. This puts the data in the correct format for processing. The transcription process was accomplished here at LaRC in the Central Data Transportation Facility (CDTF). The last step in this 3 step process is to process the data through the reduction system developed for the Impact Dynamic Research Facility in the early part of 1980. Processing system criteria, system interface routines, and engineering units program that reads digitized data from tapes, and file management programs are discussed.

Comet thermal modeling

The past year was one of tremendous activity because of the appearance of Halley's Comet. Observations of the comet were collected from a number of sources and compared with the detailed predictions of the comet thermal modeling program. Spacecraft observations of key physical parameters for cometary nucleus were incorporated into the thermal model and new cases run. These results have led to a much better understanding of physical processes on the nucleus and have pointed the way for further improvements to the modeling program. A model for the large-scale structure of cometary nuclei was proposed in which comets were envisioned as loosely bound agglomerations of smaller icy planetesimals, essentially a rubble pile of primordial dirty snowballs. In addition, a study of the physical history of comets was begun, concentrating on processes during formation and in the Oort cloud which would alter the volatile and nonvolatile materials in cometary nuclei from their pristine state before formation.
