Development and fabrication of a high current, fast recovery power diode

A high voltage (VR = 1200 V), high current (IF = 150 A), fast recovery ( 700 ns) and low forward voltage drop ( 1.5 V) silicon rectifier was designed and the process developed for its fabrication. For maximum purity, uniformity and material characteristic stability, neutron transmutation n-type doped float zone silicon is used. The design features a hexagonal chip for maximum area utilization of space available in the DO-8 diode package, PIN diffused junction structure with deep diffused D(+) anode and a shallow high concentration n(+) cathode. With the high temperature glass passivated positive bevel mesa junction termination, the achieved blocking voltage is close to the theoretical limit of the starting material. Gold diffusion is used to control the lifetime and the resulting effect on switching speed and forward voltage tradeoff. For solder reflow assembly, trimetal (Al-Ti-Ni) contacts are used. The required major device electrical characteristics were achieved. Due to the tradeoff nature of forward voltage drop and reverse recovery time, a compromise was reached for these values.

Fast magnetospheric echoes of energetic electron beams

Electron beam experiments using rocket-borne instrumentation confirmed earlier observations of fast magnetospheric echoes of artificially injected energetic electrons. A total of 234 echoes were observed in a pitch angle range from 9 to 110 deg at energies of 1.87 and 3.90 keV. Of these, 102 echoes could unambiguously be identified with known accelerator operations at 2, 4 or 8 keV energy and highest current levels resulting in the determination of transit times of typically 300 to 400 ms. In most cases, when echoes were present in both energy channels, the higher energy electrons led the lower energy ones by 50 to 70 ms. Adiabatic theory applied to these observations yields a reflection height of 3000 to 4000 km. The injection process is discussed as the strong beam-plasma interaction that occurred near the electron accelerator appears to be instrumental in generating the source of heated electrons required for successful echo detection.

A fast, programmable hardware architecture for spaceborne SAR processing

The launch of spaceborne SARs during the 1980's is discussed. The satellite SARs require high quality and high throughput ground processors. Compression ratios in range and azimuth of greater than 500 and 150 respectively lead to frequency domain processing and data computation rates in excess of 2000 million real operations per second for C-band SARs under consideration. Various hardware architectures are examined and two promising candidates and proceeds to recommend a fast, programmable hardware architecture for spaceborne SAR processing are selected. Modularity and programmability are introduced as desirable attributes for the purpose of HTSP hardware selection.

Investigation of fast initialization of spacecraft bubble memory systems

Bubble domain technology offers significant improvement in reliability and functionality for spacecraft onboard memory applications. In considering potential memory systems organizations, minimization of power in high capacity bubble memory systems necessitates the activation of only the desired portions of the memory. In power strobing arbitrary memory segments, a capability of fast turn on is required. Bubble device architectures, which provide redundant loop coding in the bubble devices, limit the initialization speed. Alternate initialization techniques are investigated to overcome this design limitation. An initialization technique using a small amount of external storage is demonstrated.

Cloud cover typing from environmental satellite imagery. Discriminating cloud structure with Fast Fourier Transforms (FFT)

The use of two dimensional Fast Fourier Transforms (FFTs) subjected to pattern recognition technology for the identification and classification of low altitude stratus cloud structure from Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) imagery was examined. The development of a scene independent pattern recognition methodology, unconstrained by conventional cloud morphological classifications was emphasized. A technique for extracting cloud shape, direction, and size attributes from GOES visual imagery was developed. These attributes were combined with two statistical attributes (cloud mean brightness, cloud standard deviation), and interrogated using unsupervised clustering amd maximum likelihood classification techniques. Results indicate that: (1) the key cloud discrimination attributes are mean brightness, direction, shape, and minimum size; (2) cloud structure can be differentiated at given pixel scales; (3) cloud type may be identifiable at coarser scales; (4) there are positive indications of scene independence which would permit development of a cloud signature bank; (5) edge enhancement of GOES imagery does not appreciably improve cloud classification over the use of raw data; and (6) the GOES imagery must be apodized before generation of FFTs.

Apparatus for continuous, fast, and precise measurements of position and velocity of a small spherical particle

The position and velocity of optically levitated glass spheres (radii 10-20 microns) movng in a gas are measured accurately, rapidly, and continuously using a high-speed rotating polygon mirror. The experimental technique developed here has repeatable position accuracies better than 20 microns. Each measurement takes less than 1 microsec and can be repeated every 100 microsec. The position of the levitated glass spheres can be manipulated accurately by modulating the laser power with an acoustic optic modulator. The technique provides a fast and accurate method to study general particle dynamics in a fluid.

Digital SAR processing using a fast polynomial transform

A new digital processing algorithm based on the fast polynomial transform is developed for producing images from Synthetic Aperture Radar data. This algorithm enables the computation of the two dimensional cyclic correlation of the raw echo data with the impulse response of a point target, thereby reducing distortions inherent in one dimensional transforms. This SAR processing technique was evaluated on a general-purpose computer and an actual Seasat SAR image was produced. However, regular production runs will require a dedicated facility. It is expected that such a new SAR processing algorithm could provide the basis for a real-time SAR correlator implementation in the Deep Space Network. Previously announced in STAR as N82-11295

Fast moving plasma structures in the distant magnetotail

The paper reports for the first time the detailed time behavior of the intensities and the angular distributions of energetic protons and electrons in the distant magnetotail of the earth at 220 earth radii and 110 earth radii. The data have been obtained by the Max-Planck-Institut/University of Maryland sensor system on ISEE 3 during the spacecraft's first deep tail passage. Three energetic particle bursts are studied in detail. It is suggested that the satellite encounters detached plasma structures evidenced by the isotropic electrons. These structures, probably plasmoids, move with high velocities (about 800 km/s) down the tail. The energetic electrons and protons stream ahead of these fast tailward moving plasma structures, which leads to the various time dispersion effects. This allows, in principle, a determination of the source distance from the satellite.

Fast Control Sequencer

Unit faster than conventional circuits and contains fewer integrated circuits. Fast logic controller accommodates three delays before second half cycle of clock signal strobes status latch: Outputs of pipeline register must settle; selected input status line signal must propagate through status multiplexer and arrive at status latch; and it takes 3 nanoseconds for status latch set up before strobed. During second half cycle, output-enable line produces next instruction and applies it to pipeline register.

Disuse Induced Changes in the Cholinergic System of Sciatic Nerve and Slow and Fast Twitch Muscle of Rats

Hindlimb suspension was used as a model of disuse in experiments studing the effects of reduced muscle activity on AChE and its molecular forms, choline acetyltransferase and nicotinic receptor binding in innervated slow and fast muscle. The weight of SOL was reduced to 64% within one week and continued to decrease progressively up to the third week when the weight was reduced to 40% as compared to controls. EDL showed a significant decrease in its weight only at the end of three weeks hypokinesia when it was reduced to 71% of control. Biochemical and histochemical findings are summarized. From these data and from morphological findings it is evident that some properties of skeletal muscles are strongly dependent on patterns and level of loadbearing and on motor unit activiy. With suspension-induced disuse, the usually slow SOL appeared to change its characteristics such as fiber type distribution and AChE activity to one that more resembled a faster muscle. It is important to note that hypokinesia induced changes either physiological, biochemical or morphological, are totally reversible as the induced changes returned to control levels within a week after cessation of disuse.

Use and disuse and the control of acetylcholinesterase activity in fast and slow twitch muscle of rat

The role of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) in neuromuscular transmission is relatively well established, little is known, however, of the mechanisms that regulate its synthesis and control its specific distribution in fast and slow muscle. Innervation plays an important role in the regulation of AChE and elimination of the influence of the nerve by surgical denervation results in a loss of AChE. The influences of the nerve and how they are mediated was investigated. It is suggested that muscle usage and other factors such as materials carried by axonal transport may participate in the regulation of this enzyme. The mechanisms that regulate AChE and its molecular forms in two functionally different forms are studied.

Fast and optimal solution to the Rankine-Hugoniot problem

A new, definitive, reliable and fast iterative method is described for determining the geometrical properties of a shock (i.e., theta sub Bn, yields N, V sub s and M sub A), the conservation constants and the self-consistent asymptotic magnetofluid variables, that uses the three dimensional magnetic field and plasma observations. The method is well conditioned and reliable at all theta sub Bn angles regardless of the shock strength or geometry. Explicit proof of uniqueness of the shock geometry solution by either analytical or graphical methods is given. The method is applied to synthetic and real shocks, including a bow shock event and the results are then compared with those determined by preaveraging methods and other iterative schemes. A complete analysis of the confidence region and error bounds of the solution is also presented.

Hardware schemes for fast Fourier transform, part 7.4A

Real-time fast fourier transformer (FFT) processing of a MST radar data and cost-effective approaches to hardware FFT generation were studied. Previously devised hardware FFT configurations are described including the estimated number of chips used and the time required to perform a 1024-point FFT. The remaining entries in the table correspond to original designs, which presuppose the availability of a microcomputer and a modestly complicated hardware peripheral. These original designs, all of which implement a radix-4 FFT with twiddle factors, are assigned model numbers to make them easier to refer to.

On reflecting boundary behind the Earth's orbit at propagation of fast particles from solar flares

The flares of solar cosmic rays (SCR) associated with the presence of shocks in interplanetary magnetic field and with their propagation at significant heliocentric distances were always of great interest. Some events and problems concerning the peculiarities of propagation of flare CR in the interplanetary medium are considered. The distinguishing feature of such events is the presence of shock front behind the Earth's orbit having formed either directly in the process of shock generation on the Sun or at large heliocentric distances as a result of the interaction of fast and slow quasistationary recurrent solar wind (SW) streams. Based on the experimental material it is shown that the significant nonlinear disturbances in IMF behind the Earth's orbit can yield the occurrence of the additional SCR flux from shock front region as a result of the interaction of flare flux with shock and a partial reflection from it.

On magnetic pair production above fast pulsar polar caps

Magnetic pair production is one of high-energy electromagnetic conversion processes important to the development of pair-photon cascades in pulsars. On the basis of current polar cap models, the properties of magnetic pair production in fast pulsars are discussed. Suppose there is a roughly dipole magnetic field at the stellar surface, the author estimate the effects on non-zero curvature of magnetic field lines upon curvature radiation from primary particles and pair production rate near the surface of pulsars.

Fast scintillation counter preamplifier for the observation of Linsley effect

A fast preamplifier circuit has been designed and thoroughly tested for the purpose of observing the air shower arrival directions including the Linsley effect. The circuit intends to eliminate the time jitter due to variation of scintillation counter signal amplitudes. It assumes that the output signals from one counter system have the same rise time. On this basis, error arising from time jitter is removed by voltage discrimination at about half signal amplitudes. Detailed description of the circuit is reported.

A fast Fermi process - Energetic electrons accelerated by a nearly perpendicular bow shock

A fast Fermi process which may explain how solar wind electrons are energized in the vicinity of the point of tangency of the IMF to the earth's bow shock is discussed. In the solar wind frame, the nearly perpendicular bow shock behaves as a rapidly moving magnetic mirror in such a manner that electrons with sufficiently large pitch angles can be reflected and accelerated. If the seed electrons have energies of several hundred electron volts, they can attain energies of several keV through the acceleration process.
