Noncontacting vibration transducer has constant sensitivity

Noncontacting transducer with constant sensitivity automatically measures the vibration amplitudes along the span of a vibrating structure of irregular contour. A system employing a feedback control positions the transducer at a constant height above the test surfaces. A differential transformer facilitates calibration and extends the amplitude range of the system.

Instrument quickly transposes ground reference target to eye level

Optical alignment of equipment is facilitated by a traverse target with a string suspending a plumb bob to transpose the ground level point to eye level operation. This instrument appreciably decreases the time required from the present method but achieves the same degree of precision.

Offset lenses add versatility to phototypesetting machine

Offset lenses facilitate the composition of inputs of other than straight baseline characters on the Photon phototypesetting machine. A number of lenses in the turret are mounted in an offset pattern that causes characters projected through them to fall on the photographic paper in the magazine above and below the baseline.

Thin-film gage measures low heat-transfer rates

Low heat-transfer gage facilitates determination of the transition between laminar and turbulent conditions, in the boundary layer surrounding slender and moderately slender cones under test in a hypersonic blowdown helium tunnel. The gage consists of a thin layer of vacuum-evaporated platinum on a heat resistant glass substrate contoured to fit model surfaces.

Basic suppression techniques are evaluated

Investigation of standard suppression methods facilitates switching of inductively loaded circuits which causes interference in adjacent electronic equipment. The data are reduced to tabular form and rapid selection of components by the designer can be made without lengthy calculations or trial and error manipulations.

Development of high pressure gas systems

This paper presents a report on the latest advances and technology in the design, construction, testing, and operation of high pressure gas bimetallic pipe systems and high pressure gas tube fittings facilitating greater alinement and manufacturing tolerances, and the supercleaning of high pressure gas systems under field conditions. The following specific topics are discussed: - Analysis of noncorrosive steels versus bimetallic, high strength steels - Analysis of various protective finishes versus bimetallic piping - Testing of high pressure systems - Pipe liner adhesion properties under varying operating conditions - Modified flared tube fittings taking into account pressure ranges, materials, costs involved in manufacture, various methods employed to permit sealing of the fitting while meeting cleanliness requirements - Cleaning requirements appertaining to high pressure gas systems and a discussion of investigations on the effects of velocity and temperature as related to various cleaning chemicals. The presentation concludes with a discussion on the possible applications of materials and methods in commercial industry.

Technique for strip chart recorder time notation

Single recorder channel helps determine the time an event is recorded on the readout of a strip chart recorder. It presents hours, tens of minutes, and minutes by a unique method of time increment identification. This facilitates recording timing marks.

Fogging technique used to coat magnesium with plastic

Cleaning process and a fogging technique facilitate the application of a plastic coating to magnesium plates. The cleaning process removes general organic and inorganic surface impurities, oils and greases, and oxides and carbonates from the magnesium surfaces. The fogging technique produces a thin-filmlike coating in a clean room atmosphere.

The Post Office communication system ground station at Goonhilly, Cornwall

The initial purpose of the Post Office satellite system earth station at Goonhilly Downs, Cornwall, is to obtain information on the performance of experimental communication satellite systems; such information will be of great importance to the designers of systems for commercial operation. To facilitate this dissemination the UK and USA Governments prepared and signed, in February 1961, a Memorandum of Understanding regarding collaboration between the British Post Office and the United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) on the testing of experimental communication satellites to be launched by NASA. The first phase of the tests covered Projects Telstar and Relay, both active satellites.

Investigation to define the propagation characteristics of a finite amplitude acoustic pressure wave

A theoretical analysis of the propagation characteristics of a finite amplitude pressure wave is presented. The analysis attempts to study the contribution of entropy-producing regions to the mechanism of aerodynamic noise generation. It results in a nonlinear convective wave equation in terms of entropy and a thermodynamic 'J' function. A direct analogy between the derived governing equation and those used in classical literature is obtained. An idealization of the processes considered permits the uncoupling of the equations of motion with a consequent construction of an acoustic analogy treating shock wave emission of finite amplitude acoustic waves. An engineering approach is reflected in the concept of an extended plug nozzle whose function is to facilitate aerodynamic noise attenuation by modifying the entropy-producing regions.
