Major determinants of the biogeographic pattern of the shallow-sea fauna

The benthic shallow-sea is defined as the region of sea floor lying between the supralittoral zone at the shoreline and the impingement of the thermocline separating a warm shallow and variable portion of the water column from rather homogeneous and constant cooler waters beneath. Three types of shallow-sea provinces can be recognized: (1) one-dimensional, linear shelves; (2) two-dimensional shelves; and (3) scattered islands in two-dimensional arrays. Dispersal powers of marine invertebrates vary with developmental mode, and patterns of dispersal, endemism and speciation vary among the different provincial types. Invertebrate developmental modes vary systematically with geography, and presumably are adaptive to environmental conditions. Clades with only a single mode of development tend to be restricted to regions appropriate to that mode, significantly affecting their biogeographic patterns. The consequences of geographic and other environmental changes are reviewed.

North Atlantic Deep Water Formation: Information from Ice Cores

The main results of measurements of the CO2 concentration of air occluded in natural ice during periods of climatic change are presented, as well as other measured ice core parameters. Elements of an interpretation of the data in terms of mechanisms of changing environmental systems are briefly discussed.

An adaptive interpolator algorithm for area-array fine guiance sensors

The present paper provides a description of recent and continuing work related to the development of tracking systems possessing artificial intelligence. It is pointed out that artificial intelligence is being used to provide trackers with the abilities to sense environmental changes which can affect tracker performance, to optimize tracker performance in a changing environment, and to report on the accuracy and stability of the pointing data. The implementation of artificial intelligence in tracking systems is based on the use of adaptive algorithms which correct for tracking errors by applying polynomial corrections to raw tracking output data. The basic operation of a centroid tracking system is discussed, taking into account the limitations on accuracy and stability which exist in the absence of intelligence. Attention is given to the correction method and the implementation of artificial intelligence to improve tracking.

Nighttime atmospheric stability changes and their effects on the temporal intensity of a mesoscale convective complex

A method of interpolating atmospheric soundings while reducing the errors associated with simple time interpolation was developed. The purpose of this was to provide a means to determine atmospheric stability at times between standard soundings and to relate changes in stability to intensity changes in an MCC. Four MCC cases were chosen for study with this method with four stability indices being included. The discussion centers on three aspects for each stability parameter examined: the stability field in the vicinity of the storm and its changes in structure and magnitude during the lifetime of the storm, the average stability within the storm boundary as a function of time and its relation to storm intensity, and the apparent flux of stability parameter into the storm as a consequence of low-level storm relative flow. It was found that the results differed among the four stability parameters, sometimes in a conflicting fashion. Thus, an interpolation of how the storm intensity is related to the changing environmental stability depends upon the particular index utilized. Some explanation for this problem is offered.
