Uncertainty in Electric Propulsion Erosion Measurements

Uncertainty in erosion rates as measured by different methods is discussed and quantified. The work focuses on case studies from components on the Hall Effect Rocket with Magnetic Shielding (HERMeS) Hall thruster, but the methods can be extended for many electric propulsion applications. The primary method used for evaluating erosion is non-contact profilometry of masked and exposed components. Accurate quantification of the erosion rates of components is critical to determining lifetime and is therefore critical to mission planning purposes.

Measurements from an Electrical Distribution System Substation During Hurricane Zeta

Hurricane Zeta made landfall on the United States mainland on October 29, 2020. The hurricane’s impacts on electrical service within the storm path included millions of customers losing power. The eye of the hurricane crossed over Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA, where advanced sensors were monitoring the operational state of a utility substation. A report on the measurement capability and rudimentary results is presented here.

Electronic Configuration Assignments for UO from Electric Dipole Moment Measurements

Diatomic UO has more than 48 bound states within 10000 cm -1 of the ground state. This electronic state congestion has been attributed to interleaved states from the electronic configurations U 2+ ($5f^37s$)O 2- and U 2+ ($5f^27s^2$)O 2- , respectively. Ligand field theory predicts that each electronic configuration will exhibit states with distinguishable, characteristic vibrational and rotational constants. However, vibronic state mixing modifies the observed vibration–rotation constants, leading to uncertainty in the configurational assignments. The permanent electric dipole moment ($μ_e$) of an electronic state should also manifest a value that is characteristic of the parent electronic configuration. $μ_e$ and other electrostatic and magnetostatic properties should be less influenced by the vibronic state mixing, providing more robust indicators for configurational assignments. In the present study, we have measured the $μ_e$ values for four electronic states of UO. Here, the results clearly demonstrate that the ground state (X(1)4) and the first electronically excited state ((2)4) are derived from the U 2+ ($5f^37s$)O 2– and U 2+ ($5f^27s^2$)O 2– configurations, respectively.

Synchronized electric meter having an atomic clock

Smart electric meters configured to perform fast, time-synchronized electrical energy measurements at the consumer-level are disclosed herein. In some embodiments, a smart electric meter includes circuitry configured to measure an electrical value at a location of an end user in a power system. The smart electric meter can further include an atomic clock configured to output a timing signal, and a controller configured to receive (a) the measured electrical value from the circuitry and (b) the timing signal from the atomic clock. The controller can further (a) process the electrical value to generate meter data and (b) generate a time tag based on the timing signal. Then, the controller can associate the time tag with the meter data to generate time-tagged meter data.

In situ measurements and radar observations of a severe storm - Electricity, kinematics, and precipitation

Electric field measurements made inside a multicell severe storm in Oklahoma in 1983 with a balloon-borne instrument are presented. The properties of the electric charge regions, such as altitude, thickness, and charge concentrations, are studied. These measurements are analzyed with meteorological measurements of temperature and humidity, and balloon tracking and radar observations. The relation between the electric charge structure and the precipitation and kinematic features of the storm is examined. The data reveal that the cell exhibits a bipolar charge structure with negative charge below positive charge. The average charge concentrations of the two regions are estimated as -1.2 and 0.15 nC/cu m, respectively; the upper positive charge is about 6 km in vertical extent, and the lower negative charge is less than 1 km in vertical extent.

Epitaxial stabilization of ultra thin films of high entropy perovskite

High entropy oxides (HEOs) are a class of materials, containing equimolar portions of five or more transition metal and/or rare-earth elements. We report here about the layer-by-layer growth of HEO [(La 0.2 Pr 0.2 Nd 0.2 Sm 0.2 Eu 0.2 )NiO 3 ] thin films on NdGaO 3 substrates by pulsed laser deposition. The combined characterizations with in situ reflection high energy electron diffraction, atomic force microscopy, and x-ray diffraction affirm the single crystalline nature of the film with smooth surface morphology. The desired +3 oxidation of Ni has been confirmed by an element sensitive x-ray absorption spectroscopy measurement. Temperature dependent electrical transport measurements revealed a first order metal-insulator transition with the transition temperature very similar to the undoped NdNiO 3 . Furthermore, since both these systems have a comparable tolerance factor, this work demonstrates that the electronic behaviors of A-site disordered perovskite-HEOs are primarily controlled by the average tolerance factor.

The electrical properties of low-g processed immiscible alloys

When dispersed or mixed immiscibles are solidified on earth, a large amount of separation of the constituents takes place due to differences in densities. However, when the immiscibles are dispersed and solidified in zero-gravity, density separation does not occur, and unique composite solids can be formed with many new and promising electrical properties. By measuring the electrical resistivity and superconducting critical temperature of zero-g processed Ga-Bi samples, it has been found that the electrical properties of such materials are entirely different from the basic constituents and the ground control samples. The finest dispersions are obtained only in a low-gravity environment. Our results indicate that space-processed immiscible materials may form an entirely new class of electronic materials. The interesting electrical properties of directionally solidified Al-Cu eutectic, a two-component alloy consisting of Al and Al2Cu which was processed on Skylab (M566) are briefly reviewed. The electrical resistivity of directionally solidified eutectics with a lamellar structure are highly anisotropic and have been studied both experimentally and theoretically. The local resistivity of the space-processed samples are compared to a ground control sample and to the expected theoretical results.

Measurement Techniques and Instruments Suitable for Life-prediction Testing of Photovoltaic Arrays

The validation of a 20-year service life for low-cost photovoltaic arrays is a critical requirement in the Low-Cost Solar Array (LSA) Project. The validation is accomplished through accelerated life-prediction tests. A two-phase study was conducted to address the needs before such tests are carried out. The results and recommended techniques from the Phase 1 investigation are summarized in the appendix. Phase 2 of the study is covered in this report and consisted of experimental evaluations of three techniques selected from these recommended as a results of the Phase 1 findings. The three techniques evaluated were specular and nonspecular optical reflectometry, chemiluminescence measurements, and electric current noise measurements.
