Structures of diverse poxin cGAMP nucleases reveal a widespread role for cGAS-STING evasion in host–pathogen conflict

DNA viruses in the family Poxviridae encode poxin enzymes that degrade the immune second messenger 2'3'-cGAMP to inhibit cGAS-STING immunity in mammalian cells. The closest homologs of poxin exist in the genomes of insect viruses suggesting a key mechanism of cGAS-STING evasion may have evolved outside of mammalian biology. Here we use a biochemical and structural approach to discover a broad family of 369 poxins encoded in diverse viral and animal genomes and define a prominent role for 2'3'-cGAMP cleavage in metazoan host-pathogen conflict. Structures of insect poxins reveal unexpected homology to flavivirus proteases and enable identification of functional self-cleaving poxins in RNA-virus polyproteins. Our data suggest widespread 2'3'-cGAMP signaling in insect antiviral immunity and explain how a family of cGAS-STING evasion enzymes evolved from viral proteases through gain of secondary nuclease activity. Poxin acquisition by poxviruses demonstrates the importance of environmental connections in shaping evolution of mammalian pathogens.

Functional and genomic diversity of the sorghum phyllosphere microbiome

A collection of 47 bacteria isolated from the mucilage of aerial roots of energy sorghum is available at the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center, Michigan State University, Michigan, USA. We enriched bacteria with putative plant-beneficial phenotypes and included information on phenotypic diversity, taxonomy, and whole genome sequences.

Diversity RF receiving system with improved phase-lock characteristics

Improved diversity receiving system automatically utilizes the combined output from its two independent receiving channels /with cross- polarized receiving antennas/ to increase the reliability of maintaining the requisite phase lock for optimum signal reception. It is adapted for use with AM, PM, or narrow band FM signals.

ATS-6 attenuation diversity measurements at 20 and 30 GHz

The results of data obtained at The University of Texas at Austin in conjunction with the ATS-6 millimeter wave experiment are presented. Attenuation measurements at 30 GHz and sky noise data at 20 GHz were obtained simultaneously at each of two sites separated by 11 km. Space diversity reduces outage time for a system in Austin, Texas with a 10 dB fade margin at 30 GHz from 15 hours to 16 minutes per year. The maximum cloud height shows a good correlation to the maximum attenuations measured.

Attenuation diversity measurements at 20 and 30 GHz

The results of data obtained at The University of Texas at Austin in conjunction with the ATS-6 millimeter wave experiment are presented. Attenuation measurements at 30 GHz and sky noise data at 20 GHz were obtained for 93 days simultaneously at each of two sites separated by 11 km and for 314 days at one site. The ratio of the loss at 30 GHz to that at 20 GHz due to rain varied from about 2 to about 4 with a median value of 2.65. This value was used to estimate 30 GHz losses for the 38.6% of time during attenuation events for which the satellite link was not available. Space diversity reduced outage time for a system in Austin, Texas, with a 10 db fade margin at 30 GHz from 3.8 hours to 4.1 minutes for the 93 days. Extrapolated to a yearly base this corresponds to 15 hours and to 16 minutes respectively. A plot of maximum observed cloud height against maximum hourly attenuation indicates that for a given attenuation level a lower limit is set for the maximum cloud height.

Surface of Venus - Evidence of diverse landforms from radar observations

Radar images seem to indicate that some regions of Venus have remained little altered since a period of intense bombardment similar to that recorded by the many large impact craters on the moon. On the other hand, there is evidence in other regions that Venus has been a geologically active planet, forming diverse landforms, and perhaps rivaling the earth in the breadth of features portrayed on its surface

Application of non-attenuating frequency radars for prediction of rain attenuation and space diversity performance

In order to establish transmitter power and receiver sensitivity levels at frequencies above 10 GHz, the designers of earth-satellite telecommunication systems are interested in cumulative rain fade statistics at variable path orientations, elevation angles, climatological regions, and frequencies. They are also interested in establishing optimum space diversity performance parameters. In this work are examined the many elements involved in the employment of single non-attenuating frequency radars for arriving at the desired information. The elements examined include radar techniques and requirements, phenomenological assumptions, path attenation formulations and procedures, as well as error budgeting and calibration analysis. Included are the pertinent results of previous investigators who have used radar for rain attenuation modeling. Suggestions are made for improving present methods.
