Vibration and flutter of mistuned bladed-disk assemblies

An analytical model for investigating vibration and flutter of mistuned bladed disk assemblies is presented. This model accounts for elastic, inertial and aerodynamic coupling between bending and torsional motions of each individual blade, elastic and inertial couplings between the blades and the disk, and aerodynamic coupling among the blades. The disk was modeled as a circular plate with constant thickness and each blade was represented by a twisted, slender, straight, nonuniform, elastic beam with a symmetric cross section. The elastic axis, inertia axis, and the tension axis were taken to be noncoincident and the structural warping of the section was explicitly considered. The blade aerodynamic loading in the subsonic and supersonic flow regimes was obtained from two-dimensional unsteady, cascade theories. All the possible standing wave modes of the disk and traveling wave modes of the blades were included. The equations of motion were derived by using the energy method in conjunction with the assumed mode shapes for the disk and the blades. Continuities of displacement and slope at the blade-disk junction were maintained. The equations were solved to investigate the effects of blade-disk coupling and blade frequency mistuning on vibration and flutter. Results showed that the flexibility of practical disks such as those used for current generation turbufans did not have a significant influence on either the tuned or mistuned flutter characteristics. However, the disk flexibility may have a strong influence on some of the system frequencies and on forced response.

Characterization of CdS/CdTe and CdS/CuInSe2 thin film solar cells

A study on low cost polycrystalline thin film CdS/CdTe and CdS/CuInSe2 solar cells using measurements of spectral response and capacitance-voltage-frequency relationships was performed. Because of high concentrations of localized levels in the energy gap existing in materials and at interfaces, the redistribution of charge among the levels due to illumination plays an important role in the collection of light-generated current in these cells. The results illustrate some related phenomena observed in these cells.

The interpretation of hard X-ray polarization measurements in solar flares

Observations of polarization of moderately hard X-rays in solar flares are reviewed and compared with the predictions of recent detailed modeling of hard X-ray bremsstrahlung production by non-thermal electrons. The recent advances in the complexity of the modeling lead to substantially lower predicted polarizations than in earlier models and more fully highlight how various parameters play a role in determining the polarization of the radiation field. The new predicted polarizations are comparable to those predicted by thermal modeling of solar flare hard X-ray production, and both are in agreement with the observations. In the light of these results, new polarization observations with current generation instruments are proposed which could be used to discriminate between non-thermal and thermal models of hard X-ray production in solar flares.

Space infrared telescope pointing control system. Automated star pattern recognition

The Space Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF) is a free flying spacecraft carrying a 1 meter class cryogenically cooled infrared telescope nearly three oders of magnitude most sensitive than the current generation of infrared telescopes. Three automatic target acquisition methods will be presented that are based on the use of an imaging star tracker. The methods are distinguished by the number of guidestars that are required per target, the amount of computational capability necessary, and the time required for the complete acquisition process. Each method is described in detail.

Ground and flight test results of a total main rotor isolation system

A six degree-of-freedom (DOF) isolation system using six LIVE units has been installed under an Army/NASA contract on a Bell 206LM helicopter. This system has been named the Total Rotor Isolation System, or TRIS. To determine the effectiveness of TRIS in reducing helicopter vibration, a flight verification study was conducted at Bell's Flight Research Center in Arlington, Texas. The flight test data indicate that the 4/rev vibration level at the pilot's seat were suppressed below the 0.04g level throughout the transition envelope. Flight tests indicate over 95% suppression of vibration level from the rotor hub to the pilot's seat. The TRIS installation was designed with a decoupled control system and has shown a significant improvement in aircraft flying qualities, such that it permitted the trimmed aircraft to be flown hands-off for a significant period of time, over 90 seconds. The TRIS flight test program has demonstrated a system that greatly reduces vibration levels of a current-generation helicopter, while significantly improving the flying qualities to a point where stability augmentation is no longer a requirement.

A piloted simulation of helicopter air combat to investigate effects of variations in selected performance and control response characteristics

A piloted simulation study investigating handling qualities and flight characteristics required for helicopter air to air combat is presented. The Helicopter Air Combat system was used to investigate this role for Army rotorcraft. Experimental variables were the maneuver envelope size (load factor and sideslip), directional axis handling qualities, and pitch and roll control-response type. Over 450 simulated, low altitude, one-on-one engagements were conducted. Results from the experiment indicate that a well damped directional response, low sideforce caused by sideslip, and some effective dihedral are all desirable for weapon system performance, good handling qualities, and low pilot workload. An angular rate command system was favored over the attitude type pitch and roll response for most applications, and an enhanced maneuver envelope size over that of current generation aircraft was found to be advantageous. Pilot technique, background, and experience are additional factors which had a significant effect on performance in the air combat tasks investigated. The implication of these results on design requirements for future helicopters is presented.

The CCD flash gate

Preliminary findings are presented for a new approach that significantly improves the quantum efficiency of the current generation of high-performance, thinned, backside illuminated silicon CCDs. Experiments have shown that the application of a less than 4-micron thick layer of metal with high work function to the backside of the CCD can yield 100-percent internal quantum efficiency in the visible, UV, XUV and soft X-ray regions of the spectrum. Theory and solid state models describing the new technique (the 'CCD flash gate'), and a considerable amount of experimental data, are discussed. Specific recommendations for use of the flash gate in present and future CCDs are also reviewed.

EUV astronomical spectroscopy with CCD detectors

The applicability of CCD detectors to astronomical extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectroscopy (100-1250 A) is discussed. The advantages of CCDs in this spectral region include internal electron yield, the potential for very high quantum efficiency (about 50-90 percent), and broad wavelength response. Visible light suppression is achieved by a combination of low grating scattering, greater than unity electron yield in the EUV, and various filter techniques. For the current generation of CCDs, detection of only a few EUV photons will rapidly overwhelm the read noise; thus, for all practical S/N ratios used in astronomical spectroscopy, read noise will be negligible compared to the poisson statistics of the detected photons. A model based on experimental data for the quantum efficiency and electron yield of CCDs in the EUV is discussed.

Strategies for obtaining the maximum performance from current supercomputers

The exploitation of special features of the current generation of supercomputers is discussed with particular reference to computational quantum chemistry. Modification of algorithms in the light of the very large memory available on the CRAY 2 is described, and multi-processing of programs is considered for both the CRAY XMP and CRAY 2. The overhead in multi-processing can be reduced to a small percentage even for steps that perform extensive IO.

A high fidelity real-time simulation of a small turboshaft engine

A high-fidelity component-type model and real-time digital simulation of the General Electric T700-GE-700 turboshaft engine were developed for use with current generation real-time blade-element rotor helicopter simulations. A control system model based on the specification fuel control system used in the UH-60A Black Hawk helicopter is also presented. The modeling assumptions and real-time digital implementation methods particular to the simulation of small turboshaft engines are described. The validity of the simulation is demonstrated by comparison with analysis-oriented simulations developed by the manufacturer, available test data, and flight-test time histories.

Effects of ordinary and superconducting cosmic strings on primordial nucleosynthesis

A precise calculation is done of the primordial nucleosynthesis constraint on the energy per length of ordinary and superconducting cosmic strings. A general formula is provided for the constraint on the string tension for ordinary strings. Using the current values for the various parameters that describe the evolution of loops, the constraint for ordinary strings is G mu less than 2.2 x 10 to the minus 5 power. Our constraint is weaker than previously quoted limits by a factor of approximately 5. For superconducting loops, with currents generated by primordial magnetic fields, the constraint can be less or more stringent than this limit, depending on the strength of the magnetic field. It is also found in this case that there is a negligible amount of entropy production if the electromagnetic radiation from strings thermalizes with the radiation background.

Speeding up parallel processing

In 1967 Amdahl expressed doubts about the ultimate utility of multiprocessors. The formulation, now called Amdahl's law, became part of the computing folklore and has inspired much skepticism about the ability of the current generation of massively parallel processors to efficiently deliver all their computing power to programs. The widely publicized recent results of a group at Sandia National Laboratory, which showed speedup on a 1024 node hypercube of over 500 for three fixed size problems and over 1000 for three scalable problems, have convincingly challenged this bit of folklore and have given new impetus to parallel scientific computing.

The generic task toolset: High level languages for the construction of planning and problem solving systems

The current generation of languages for the construction of knowledge-based systems as being at too low a level of abstraction is criticized, and the need for higher level languages for building problem solving systems is advanced. A notion of generic information processing tasks in knowledge-based problem solving is introduced. A toolset which can be used to build expert systems in a way that enhances intelligibility and productivity in knowledge acquistion and system construction is described. The power of these ideas is illustrated by paying special attention to a high level language called DSPL. A description is given of how it was used in the construction of a system called MPA, which assists with planning in the domain of offensive counter air missions.

Field-aligned currents and magnetospheric convection - A comparison between MHD simulations and observations

A time-dependent three-dimensional MHD model was used to investigate the magnetospheric configuration as a function of the interplanetary magnetic field direction when it was in the y-z plane in geocentric solar magnetospheric coordinates. The model results show large global convection cells, tail lobe cells, high-latitude polarcap cells, and low latitude cells. The field-aligned currents generated in the model magnetosphere and the model convection system are compared with observations from low-altitude polar orbiting satellites.
