Procedure for estimating stability and control parameters from flight test data by using maximum likelihood methods employing a real-time digital system

A maximum likelihood parameter estimation procedure and program were developed for the extraction of the stability and control derivatives of aircraft from flight test data. Nonlinear six-degree-of-freedom equations describing aircraft dynamics were used to derive sensitivity equations for quasilinearization. The maximum likelihood function with quasilinearization was used to derive the parameter change equations, the covariance matrices for the parameters and measurement noise, and the performance index function. The maximum likelihood estimator was mechanized into an iterative estimation procedure utilizing a real time digital computer and graphic display system. This program was developed for 8 measured state variables and 40 parameters. Test cases were conducted with simulated data for validation of the estimation procedure and program. The program was applied to a V/STOL tilt wing aircraft, a military fighter airplane, and a light single engine airplane. The particular nonlinear equations of motion, derivation of the sensitivity equations, addition of accelerations into the algorithm, operational features of the real time digital system, and test cases are described.

Applications of remote sensing in resource management in Nebraska

A computer-generated graphic display of land use data was developed. The level II inventory data for Sarpy County, Nebraska, was placed on magnetic tape. This data could then be displayed in a map format for comparative analysis of amount and distribution of the various categories of land use. The presentation scale can be varied and thus utilized as a direct guide for cartographic purposes during preparation for publication. In addition, the inventory and classification system was further refined.

Design outline for a new multiman ATC simulation facility at NASA-Ames Research Center

A new and unique facility for studying human factors aspects in aeronautics is being planned for use in the Man-Vehicle Systems Research Division at the NASA-Ames Research Center. This facility will replace the existing three cockpit-single ground controller station and be expandable to include approximately seven cockpits and two ground controller stations. Unlike the previous system, each cockpit will be mini-computer centered and linked to a main CPU to effect a distributed computation facility. Each simulator will compute its own flight dynamic and flight path predictor. Mechanical flight instruments in each cockpit will be locally supported and CRT cockpit displays of (e.g.) traffic and or RNAV information will be centrally computed and distributed as a means of extending the existing computational and graphical resources. An outline of the total design is presented which addresses the technical design options and research possibilities of this unique man-machine facility and which may also serve as a model for other real time distributed simulation facilities.

Laser-optical blade tip clearance measurement system

A laser-optical measurement system was developed to measure single blade tip clearances and average blade tip clearances between a rotor and its gas path seal in rotating component rigs and complete engines. The system is applicable to fan, compressor and turbine blade tip clearance measurements. The engine mounted probe is particularly suitable for operation in the extreme turbine environment. The measurement system consists of an optical subsystem, an electronic subsystem and a computing and graphic terminal. Bench tests and environmental tests were conducted to confirm operation at temperatures, pressures, and vibration levels typically encountered in an operating gas turbine engine.

Crop-phenology and LANDSAT-based irrigated lands inventory in the high plains

Optimal LANDSAT image dates for 1980 were identified based on the weekly crop-weather reports for Colorado, New Mexico, South Dakota, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, and Wyoming. The 1979 agricultural statistics data were entered into computer files and a revised questionnaire was developed and mailed to ASCS county agents. A set of computer programs was developed to allow the preparation of computer-assisted graphic displays of much of the collected data.

On the modelling and simulation of the dynamics and control of large flexible orbiting systems

This paper attempts to review the steps involved in the development of mathematical models that can be used to simulate the in-orbit dynamics of large flexible systems. The use of graph theoretic techniques can often be used to reduce the computational effort involved for calculating the eigenvalues of large ordered systems. Computer generated graphical techniques may provide additional insight into the understanding of elastic modal shape functions of complex systems. Finally the numerical techniques commonly used to develop shape and attitude control laws will be briefly reviewed.

Crop-phenology and LANDSAT-based irrigated lands inventory in the high plains

Crop calendars for 1979 and 1980 were investigated in support of an effort to develop techniques for mapping the High Plains aquifer region. Optimal LANDSAT image dates for 1980 were preliminarily identified based on ESS weekly crop weather reports and 1979 ESS agricultural statistics were entered into the computer. A questionnaire was compiled and sent to ASCS county agents with the approval of the Extension Directors in each state involved. Data from returning questionnaires were tabulated and development started on a set of computer programs to allow the preparation of computer assisted graphic displays of much of the collected data.

Present capabilities and future requirements for computer-aided geometric modeling in the design and manufacture of gas turbine

Gas turbine engine design requires the ability to rapidly develop complex structures which are subject to severe thermal and mechanical operating loads. As in all facets of the aerospace industry, engine designs are constantly driving towards increased performance, higher temperatures, higher speeds, and lower weight. The ability to address such requirements in a relatively short time frame has resulted in a major thrust towards integrated design/analysis/manufacturing systems. These computer driven graphics systems represent a unique challenge, with major payback opportunities if properly conceived, implemented, and applied.

Navier-Stokes computations for exotic airfoils

A hyperbolic grid generator with improvements for handling sharp corners and concave surfaces combined with a Navier-Stokes flow solver is applied to complex two dimensional airfoil configurations. Steady separated flow about an iced leading edge of an airfoil is presented. Unsteady viscous separated flows past an airfoil at two angles of attack with a spoiler deployed at 60 deg are compared with experiment. The spoiler computations are performed with two different topological maps of the physical domain to the computational domain. Graphical techniques for the static and unsteady display of the flow fields are discussed.

Interactive mission planning for a Space Shuttle flight experiment - A case history

Scientific experiments which use the Space Shuttle as a platform require the development of new operations techniques for the command and control of the instrument. Principal among these is the ability to simulate the complex maneuvers of the orbiter's path realistically. Computer generated graphics provide a window into the actual and predicted performance of the instrument and allow sophisticated control of the instrument under varying conditions. In October of 1984 the Shuttle carried a synthetic aperture radar built by JPL for the purpose of recording images of the earth surface. The mission deviated from planned operation in almost every conceivable way and provided an exacting test bed for concepts of interactive mission planning.

Thermal analysis of radiometer containers for the 122m hoop column antenna concept

A thermal analysis was conducted for the 122 Meter Hoop Column Antenna (HCA) Radiometer electronic package containers. The HCA radiometer containers were modeled using the computer aided graphics program, ANVIL 4000, and thermally simulated using two thermal programs, TRASYS and MITAS. The results of the analysis provided relationships between the absorptance-emittance ratio and the average surface temperature of the orbiting radiometer containers. These relationships can be used to specify the surface properties, absorptance and reflectance, of the radiometer containers. This is an initial effort in determining the passive thermal protection needs for the 122 m HCA radiometer containers. Several recommendations are provided which expand this effort so specific passive and active thermal protection systems can be defined and designed.

A review of modelling techniques for the open and closed-loop dynamics of large space systems

This paper reviews the steps in the development of mathematical models that can be used to simulate the in-orbit dynamic behavior of large flexible systems. A general continuum formulation is compared with the hybrid coordinate formulation and also a finite element representation of the total system. A review of structural analysis routines emphasizes the use of computer generated graphics to help understand the different modal elastic shape functions of complex systems. Numerical techniques employed to synthesize shape and attitude control laws are summarized. Finally, the modeling of environmental disturbance torques due to the interaction of solar radiation pressure on vibrating and thermally deflected systems is discussed.
