Low Background kTon-Scale Liquid Argon Time Projection Chambers

We find that it is possible to increase sensitivity to low energy physics in a third or fourth DUNE-like module with careful controls over radiopurity and some modifications to a detector similar to the DUNE Far Detector design. In particular, sensitivity to supernova and solar neutrinos can be enhanced with improved MeV-scale reach. A neutrinoless double beta decay search with $^{136}$Xe loading appears feasible. Furthermore, sensitivity to Weakly-Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) Dark Matter (DM) becomes competitive with the planned world program in such a detector, offering a unique seasonal variation detection that is characteristic for the nature of WIMPs.

ARIES and PEGI Platform - Overview and Background

NREL's Power Electronic Grid Interface (PEGI) Workshop, held October 13, 2020, focused on the research challenges of operating power systems with ever-higher levels of inverter-based generation and power-electronic-based load. This presentation shares an overview of ARIES and the PEGI Platform.

Compact imaging system using a co-linear, high-intensity LED illumination unit to minimize window reflections for background-oriented schlieren, shadowgraph, photogrammetry and machine vision measurements

One aspect of the present disclosure is an imaging system including an optical sensor defining an optical axis. The system further includes a light source. The system may include an optical beam splitter, and may also include an optional diffusing lens that may be configured to diffuse and/or collimate light from the light source and direct light exiting the diffusing lens to the optical beam splitter. The optical beam splitter is configured to direct light from the light source along the optical axis of the optical sensor.

Implementation of a Time-domain Cosmic-ray-muon Tagger for the NEXUS Low-background Cryogenic Facility

Quantifying the effects of radiation on the operation of qubits both as quantum information systems as well as particle detectors has emerged as a pressing issue in quantum science in recent years. We present an overview of the design, operation, and deployment of a 90-$\mathrm{in}^2$ three-panel muon detector for use in the NEXUS experimental facility at Fermilab to temporally isolate correlated errors in qubits and determine if they possess an astrophysical origin. Constructed with three scintillator-attached PMTs read out with NIM modules in a triply-coincident logic scheme, we measure a surface-level muon luminosity of 9.7425 muons per second---consistent with an average surface-level cosmic-ray flux of approximately one muon per square centimeter per minute. Integrating the NIM modules with an MCC 128 DAQ HAT and Raspberry Pi, a Python script records exactly when a muon struck the detector and writes a timestamp to a log file for follow-up cross referencing. This experiment will broadly contribute to further studies aimed at understanding the source and mitigation of information loss in qubits.
