Density and flux distributions in the lunar atmosphere due to point and line sources

Apart from the globally distributed ambient gases in the lunar atmosphere, localized gas sources, such as volcanos, may have a measurable effect on the process of shaping the lunar atmosphere. Analytic solutions were obtained for the spatial distributions of neutral gas densities and fluxes due to point and line sources at the lunar surface. Both density and flux profiles are strong functions of the distance from the source to the point of observation. The study also reveals that: (1) The location of the source may be identified from the density and flux profiles. (2) If the gas species is known, the temperature of the gas may be determined from the density gradient at a distance of several scale heights from the source. (3) The strength of the gas source may be determined by the magnitudes of density and flux.

The prediction of nonlinear longitudinal combustion instability in liquid propellant rockets

An analytical technique was developed to solve nonlinear longitudinal combustion instability problems. The analysis yields the transient and limit cycle behavior of unstable motors and the threshold amplitude required to trigger a linearly stable motor into unstable operation. The limit cycle waveforms were found to exhibit shock wave characteristics for most unstable engine operating conditions. A method of correlating the analytical solutions with experimental data was developed. Calculated results indicate that a second-order solution adequately describes the behavior of combustion instability oscillations over a broad range of engine operating conditions, but that higher order effects must be accounted for in order to investigate engine triggering.

Ultrahigh energy photons, electrons, and neutrinos, the microwave background, and the universal cosmic-ray hypothesis

The production of ultrahigh energy photons, electrons and neutrinos as the decay products of pions produced in photomeson interactions between cosmic ray nucleons and the blackbody microwave background is discussed in terms of the resultant energy spectra of these particles. Simple asymptotic formulas are given for calculating the ultrahigh energy photon spectrum predicted for the universal cosmic ray hypothesis and the resulting spectra are compared with those obtained previously by numerical means using a different propagation equation for the photons. Approximate analytic solutions for the photon spectra are given in terms of simple power-law energy functions and slowly varying logarithmic functions.

Transient heating in the upper atmosphere

The time-dependent response of the upper atmosphere to transient heat sources is considered. The basic problem is that of heating a compressible, heat-conducting fluid, which is described in the one-dimensional case by an analytic solution. Comparisons with satellite drag data of such first-order solutions are shown to be useful in determining energy requirements and in determining some constraints on the spatial distribution of the heating. Recent OGO-6 mass spectrometer and interferometric temperature measurements show that atmospheric disturbances during geomagnetic storms are much more prominent in the auroral zones. These results suggest that joule dissipation of auroral currents are important contributors to orbital perturbations of satellites.

Transport of solar flare protons: Comparison of a new analytic model with spacecraft measurements

An analytic solution was obtained to the complete Fokker-Planck equation including the effects of convection, interplanetary deceleration and acceleration, corotation, and anisotropic diffusion. The solution yields a time to maximum for the particle flux of about 10 h and an exponential decay time of about 5 h. Several solar flare particle events were observed with the solar and galactic cosmic ray experiment on OGO-6. Comparisons of the calculated time dependence of the fluxes with these observations of 1 to 70 MeV protons show that the model adequately describes both the rise and decay times.

A NASTRAN correlation study for vibrations of a cross-stiffened ship's deck

To evaluate the effectiveness of NASTRAN for predicting the vibration modes of panels with bending-membrane coupling, a cross-stiffened ship deck was analyzed. In correlation with experimental data, one NASTRAN finite element representation gave results slightly more accurate than a previous analytical solution. Computational time was excessively long, due to the Guyan method of reducing the eigenvalue problem. It is recommended that a more efficient method of matrix reduction be implemented for the lumped mass formulation.

An isoparametric quadrilateral membrane element for NASTRAN

The geometric and kinematic properties of the element are described, along with development of the matrices and vectors which characterize the element. The necessity for considering small deviations from element planeness is discussed, and the approach taken to account for these deviations is described. The improved accuracy over the existing quadrilateral membrane is indicated by a sample calculation for which an analytical solution is available from beam theory. For the same finite element idealization, the errors in maximum displacement and stress were significantly reduced.

Finite stretching of a circular plate of neo-Hookean material.

The analytical solution presented is based on the assumption that the deformed thickness of the plate is approximately constant. The nonlinear equations governing finite axisymmetric deformations of a circular plate made of neo-Hookean material are used in the analysis. The variation of circumferential extension ratio and the variation of deformed thickness are shown in graphs.

Steady-state temperature distribution in living tissue modeled as cylindrical shells.

Closed form, analytical solutions to the problem of steady-state heat transfer in living tissue modeled as cylindrical shells are presented and discussed. These solutions are particularly useful for the study of temperature distributions in the extremities. Metabolic heat generation, conduction, and heat transported by the blood perfusing the tissue are considered in the model. The results demonstrate the important role that the blood stream plays in the transfer of heat inside living tissue. Solutions are also presented for the limiting cases of diminishing blood flow that would occur during vasoconstriction or occlusion of blood by external means.

Optimal filtering in the presence of unmodeled time correlated driving disturbances.

In many realistic data filtering problems, the cross correlation of the state estimation error and the state forcing function is unknown due to the poor knowledge of the time history of the forcing function. In this paper, the conservative and minimal approximation to the cross correlation terms is presented. It requires only the knowledge of the estimation error covariance and the forcing function covariance, with the choice of an associated free parameter left to the user. If the estimation error covariance and/or the forcing function covariance are bounded from above but not known exactly, the cross correlation approximation using those upper bounds remains conservative. This cross correlation approximation leads to a conservative approximation to the estimation error covariance matrix differential equation between measurement times. The free parameter is determined as the analytic solution to an associated optimal control problem. The procedure is expanded to include discrete linear measurement incorporation.

Modes of vibration in a circular plate with three simple support points.

The analytical solutions for the vibrational modes of a thin circular flat plate that is simply supported at three points on the circumference are presented. The mode shapes and corresponding eigenvalues are obtained. Results show that the modes can be grouped into four different types depending on the manner by which they receive the pressure at the supported points. The problem is of the mixed boundary value type in that some portion of the boundary is free while the other portion is simply supported.

Radiation from a parallel-plate waveguide into a dielectric or plasma layer.

An analytical solution for radiation from a truncated parallel-plate waveguide into a dielectric or plasma slab is obtained by solving the Hilbert problem associated with a certain singular integral equation. The technique has the advantage that the edge condition is easily shown to be satisfied, and numerical results can be obtained with excellent accuracy. Numerical results are presented for a variety of dielectric and plasma slabs, parallel-plate separations, and aperture-to-slab distances.

Possible flow regimes of adiabatic one-dimensional compressible fluid flow with friction in convergent and divergent ducts.

An analytical solution for the compressible one-dimensional flow in convergent and divergent ducts with friction is obtained. It is found that a nondimensional parameter, N, can be formed using the friction factor, duct half-angle and the ratio of specific heats of the gas. Seven flow regimes are describable with the solution, based on certain bounds on the magnitude of N. The regimes are discussed and corollary data are presented graphically.

Minimum weight passive insulation requirements for hypersonic cruise vehicles.

Analytical solutions are derived for two representative cases of the transient heat conduction equation to determine the minimum weight requirements for passive insulation systems of hypersonic cruise vehicles. The cases discussed are the wet wall case with the interior wall temperature held to that of the boiling point of the fuel throughout the flight, and the dry wall case where the heat transferred through the insulation is absorbed by the interior structure whose temperature is allowed to rise.

Transfer of resonance-line radiation in differentially expanding atmospheres. I - General considerations and Monte Carlo calculations.

A Monte Carlo method is given for analyzing the transfer of resonance radiation in a rapidly and differentially expanding nebula. Coherence in the frame of the atom is shown to lead to interesting modifications of the emergent radiation field, as compared with the other more usual assumptions of coherence or redistribution in the fluid frame. Results are presented in tabular form suitable for further use. Sample line profiles produced by pure scattering out of the continuum are generated, and it is shown that an arbitrarily high peak can be obtained. This conclusion is independent of the coherence assumption used. The distribution of the number of scatterings is found in all cases. An analytic solution is presented for the case of coherence in the fluid frame.

Quasi-periodic orbits about the translunar libration point.

Analytical solutions for quasi-periodic orbits about the translunar libration point are obtained by using the method of Lindstedt-Poincare and computerized algebraic manipulations. The solutions include the effects of nonlinearities, lunar orbital eccentricity, and the sun's gravitational field. For a small-amplitude orbit, the orbital path as viewed from the earth traces out a Lissajous figure. This is due to a small difference in the fundamental frequencies of the in-plane and out-of-plane oscillations. However, when the amplitude of the in-plane oscillation is greater than 32,379 km, there is a corresponding value of the out-of-plane amplitude that will produce a path where the fundamental frequencies are equal. This synchronized trajectory describes a 'halo orbit' of the moon.

The interaction of Sco X-1 with its environment.

Analytic discussion of the ionization produced in a uniform medium by a bremsstrahlung X-ray source. In particular, the ionization of interstellar gas in the vicinity of Sco X-1 is considered, and the analysis is formulated in terms of the specific parameters associated with this source. A constant temperature in the medium surrounding Sco X-1 is assumed, and simple numerical and analytic solutions are obtained for electron density and emitted radiation variation with distance from the X-ray source.

The problem of the boundary conditions in thermosphere dynamics.

A simple analytic solution for the generation and propagation of tidal waves at thermospheric heights is presented. It is used to show that a unique solution of tidal wave propagation within the thermosphere depends on the boundary conditions of the model, and that radiation conditions lead to such a unique solution.
