Na-functionalized Ir Te 2 monolayer: Suppressed charge ordering and electric field tuned topological phase transition

Two-dimensional materials with atomic thickness usually possess superior tunability by surface adsorption than their bulk counterparts, showing great promise for novel nanotechnologies. In layered transition-metal dichalcogenide IrTe 2 there exhibits complex structural distortions induced by charge ordering, resulting in difficulties for the applications of its corresponding monolayer material. Here, using first-principles calculations, we demonstrate that depositing Na on the surface of the IrTe 2 monolayer can suppress the structural distortion to form a stable NaIrTe 2 sheet. It naturally breaks the inversion symmetry to enable a Rashba-type spin splitting for potential spintronic applications. In addition, the introduced empty Na s band and the valence band of the IrTe 2 monolayer can be inverted by the application of a perpendicular electric field, achieving a quantum phase transition from normal to topological insulator. Such an electric field-controlled topological phase transition is promising for the realization of topological field-effect transistors. Furthermore, these findings not only provide a feasible approach to stabilizing the IrTe 2 monolayer, but also broaden its applications in spintronics and low-dissipation topoelectronics.

Absence of long-range magnetic order in Fe 1–δ Te 2 (δ ≈ 0.1) crystals

Transition metal dichalcogenides attract considerable attention due to variety of interesting properties, including long range magnetism in nanocrystals. Here we have investigated magnetic, thermal and electrical properties of FeTe 2 single crystal with iron vacancy defects. Magnetic measurements shows paramagnetic state and the absence of magnetic order with small anisotropy in magnetic susceptibility. Fe 3d orbitals are well hybridized, contributing to bad metal electrical resistivity. Observed thermal conductivity values below room temperature are rather low and comparable to high performance thermoelectric materials. Furthermore, our results indicate that FeTe 2 can form in highly defective marcasite crystal structure which can be exploited in future materials design.

Phase-resolved terahertz nanoimaging of W Te 2 microcrystals

The terahertz (THz) electrodynamics of few-layer W⁢Te 2 is dominated by the plasmon response. However, THz surface plasmons (SPs) with long wavelengths in two-dimensional exfoliated crystals are typically confined by the lateral geometry. Direct visualization of the plasmonic standing wave patterns is challenging due to the spatial confinement and low quality factor of the SP, especially for samples that are only a few monolayers thick. Here, we resolve subtle real-space features of the plasmonic response of W⁢Te 2 by augmenting more common scattering amplitude experiments with the phase contrast accomplished within the time-domain version of THz nanoimaging. Amplitude and phase images allow us to quantitatively evaluate the evolution of the plasmonic response at cryogenic temperatures in samples with variable thickness from 3 to 12 monolayers. Further, the proposed imaging modality is universally applicable to the THz near-field nanoscopy of low-dimensional materials.

Charge density wave order, local lattice distortions, and topological electronic states in Nb Te 4

Assessing the atomic and electronic structure of strongly correlated systems in which the crystal symmetry changes due to emergent lattice distortions, such as charge density waves (CDWs), is nontrivial because the distortions are not necessarily amenable to a traditional crystallographic description. Using advance scattering and modeling techniques, we reveal the evolution of the atomic displacement modes behind the CDW phases of quasi-one-dimensional NbTe 4 and also derive the so far unknown atomic structure of its low-temperature commensurate (C) CDW phase. Electronic structure calculations based on the experimental C-CDW structure data predict the existence of Dirac fermions whose multiplicity turns out to depend on the degree of lattice distortions accounted for in the experimental structure derivation. Finally, we argue that the electronic structure of CDW systems in general, and in particular in transition metal tetra-tellurides, can be strongly impacted by local lattice distortions and, therefore, they should be fully accounted for when their rich physics is considered.

Structure and magnetic properties of Ba 9 ⁢V 3 ⁢Te 15 with ferromagnetic spin chains

Here we report a ferromagnetic compound Ba9⁢V3⁢Te15 with quasi-one-dimensional (1D) spin chains. It was synthesized at high-temperature and high-pressure conditions and systematically investigated via structural, transport, magnetic and heat capacity measurements. Ba9⁢V3⁢Te15 mainly consists of trimerized face-sharing V⁢Te6 octahedral chains running along the 𝑐 axis, which are separated by a distance of 10.184⁢(8)⁢Å, thus demonstrating a strong 1D structural character. Ba9⁢V3⁢Te15 is a semiconductor with a band gap ∼128meV and undergoes a ferromagnetic transition with 𝑇C∼3.6K. Far above 𝑇C, the short-range spin orders due to the intrachain spin coupling have developed, which leads to a negative magnetoresistance effect, the deviation of magnetic susceptibility from the Curie-Weiss law and 𝑇1/2 dependence of magnetic heat capacity. Our results reveal that Ba9⁢V3⁢Te15 provides a good opportunity to study the intrinsic properties of a system with quasi-1D ferromagnetic spin chains.

Vibrational properties and thermal transport in quaternary chalcogenides: The case of Te-based compositions

Vibrational thermal properties of CuZn 2 InTe 4 , AgZn 2 InTe 4 , and Cu 2 CdSnTe 4 , derived from binary II-VI zinc-blendes, are reported based on first-principles calculations. While the chalcogenide atoms in these materials have the same lattice positions, the cation atom arrangements vary, resulting in different crystal symmetries and subsequent properties. The compositional differences have important effects on the vibrational thermal characteristics of the studied materials, which demonstrate that low-frequency optical phonons hybridize with acoustic phonons and lead to enhanced phonon-phonon scattering and low lattice thermal conductivities. The phonon density of states, mode Grüneisen parameters, and phonon scattering rates are also calculated, enabling deeper insight into the microscopic thermal conduction processes in these materials. Compositional variations drive differences among the three materials considered here; nonetheless, their structural similarities and generally low thermal conductivities (0.5–4 W/m K at room temperature) suggest that other similar II-VI zinc-blende derived materials will also exhibit similarly low values, as also corroborated by experimental data. Finally, this, combined with the versatility in designing a variety of motifs on the overall structure, makes quaternary chalcogenides interesting for thermal management and energy conversion applications that require low thermal conductivity.

Facile integration of giant exchange bias in Fe 5 Ge Te 2 / oxide heterostructures by atomic layer deposition

Exchange bias arises from the interfacial exchange coupling in ferromagnet-antiferromagnet bilayers and manifests as a horizontal shift of the magnetic hysteresis loop, constituting a critical component underpinning a broad range of magnetoresistive logic and memory devices. The facile implementation of exchange bias in van der Waals (vdW) magnets would be a key step towards practical devices for emerging vdW spintronics. Here, in this paper, we report an easy approach to establishing strong exchange bias in the vdW magnet Fe 5 GeTe 2 by a single-step process—atomic layer deposition (ALD) of oxides on Fe 5 GeTe 2 . We successfully created exchange bias of 300–1500 Oe in Fe 5 GeTe 2 /Al 2 O 3 , Fe 5 GeTe 2 /ZnO, and Fe 5 GeTe 2 /V 2 O 5 heterostructures, at 130 K. Control experiments showed that increasing the oxidant pulse duration in each ALD cycle or utilizing the stronger oxidant O 3 can enhance the exchange bias strength, revealing the key role of the ALD oxidants. Our systematic work elucidates the essential role of ALD-enabled oxidization of Fe 5 GeTe 2 in the formation of exchange bias, and establishes ALD of oxides as a facile, controllable, and generally effective approach to creating giant exchange bias in vdW magnets, representing an integral advance towards practical vdW spintronic devices.

Magnetic properties of the quasi-one-dimensional S = 1 spin chain antiferromagnet BaNi Te 2 O 7

We report a quasi-one-dimensional S=1 spin chain compound BaNiTe 2 O 7 . This magnetic system has been investigated by magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and neutron powder diffraction. These results indicate that BaNiTe 2 O 7 develops a short-range magnetic correlation around T ~ 22K. With further cooling, an antiferromagnetic phase transition is observed at T N ~ 5.4K. Neutron powder diffraction revealed antiferromagnetic noncollinear order with a commensurate propagation vector k = (1/2,1,0). The refined magnetic moment size of Ni 2+ at 1.5 K is 1.84 μB , and its noncollinear spin texture is confirmed by first-principles calculations. In conclusion, inelastic neutron-scattering results and density functional theory calculations confirmed the quasi-one-dimensional nature of the spin systems.

First-principles derivation of magnetic interactions in the triangular quantum spin liquid candidates KYb C h 2 ( C h = S , Se , Te ) and A YbSe 2 ( A = Na , Rb )

The AYb Ch 2 (A=alkali metal, Ch=chalcogen) delafossites are a family of crystals which have a triangular lattice of effective S=1/2 moments on their Yb atoms. They hold great promise for the realization of the triangular quantum spin liquid state because of their defect-minimized growth and the ability to interchange chemical constituencies among the family. Here we use ab initio computations to evaluate the exchange couplings of four realized (and one theoretical) rhombohedral delafossite structures and examine the influence of chemical substitution on promoting the development of a quantum spin liquid state. We find good agreement with experiment regarding the antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor exchange J 1 , but our calculations underestimate J 2 .
