Strain-tuned quantum criticality in electronic Potts-nematic systems

Motivated by recent observations of threefold rotational symmetry breaking in twisted moiré systems, cold-atom optical lattices, quantum Hall systems, and triangular antiferromagnets, we phenomenologically investigate the strain-temperature phase diagram of the electronic 3-state Potts-nematic order. While in the absence of strain the quantum Potts-nematic transition is first-order, quantum critical points (QCP) emerge when uniaxial strain is applied, whose nature depends on whether the strain is compressive or tensile. In one case, the nematic amplitude jumps between two non-zero values while the nematic director remains pinned, leading to a symmetry-preserving metanematic transition that terminates at a quantum critical end-point. For the other type of strain, the nematic director unlocks from the strain direction and spontaneously breaks an in-plane twofold rotational symmetry, which in twisted moiré superlattices triggers an electric polarization. Such a piezoelectric transition changes from first to second-order upon increasing strain, resulting in a quantum tricritical point. Using a Hertz-Millis approach, we show that these QCPs share interesting similarities with the widely studied Ising-nematic QCP. The existence of three minima in the nematic action also leaves fingerprints in the strain-nematic hysteresis curves, which display multiple loops. At non-zero temperatures, because the upper critical dimension of the 3-state Potts model is smaller than three, the Potts-nematic transition is expected to remain first-order in 3D, but to change to second-order in 2D. As a result, the 2D strain-temperature phase diagram displays two first-order transition wings bounded by lines of critical end-points or tricritical points, reminiscent of the phase diagram of metallic ferromagnets. Furthermore, we discuss how our results can be used to unambiguously identify spontaneous Potts-nematic order.

Singlet, triplet, and pair density wave superconductivity in the doped triangular-lattice moiré system

Recent experimental progress has established the twisted bilayer transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) as a highly tunable platform for studying many-body physics. Particularly, the homobilayer TMDs under displacement field are believed to be described by a generalized triangular-lattice Hubbard model with a spin-dependent hopping phase θ. To explore the effects of θ on the system, we perform density matrix renormalization group calculations for the relevant triangular lattice t-J model. By changing θ at small hole doping, we obtain a region of quasi-long-range superconducting order coexisting with charge and spin density wave within 0 < θ < π/3. The superconductivity is composed of a dominant spin singlet d-wave and a subdominant triplet p-wave pairing. Intriguingly, the S z = ±1 triplet pairing components feature pair-density waves. In addition, we find a region of triplet superconductivity coexisting with charge-density wave and ferromagnetism within π/3 < θ < 2π/3, which is related to the former phase at smaller θ by a combined operation of spin-flip and gauge transformation. Furthermore, our findings provide insights and directions for experimental search for exotic superconductivity in twisted TMD systems.

Magnetic field induced partially polarized chiral spin liquid in a transition metal dichalcogenide moiré system

As one of the most intriguing states of matter, the chiral spin liquid (CSL) has attracted much scientific interest while its existence and mechanism in crystalline strongly correlated systems remain hotly debated. On the other hand, strong correlation driven emergent phenomena can be realized in twisted transition metal dichalcogenide bilayers with a tremendously tunable large length scale providing a new platform for the emergence of CSLs. Here, we focus on a strongly correlated model relevant to heterobilayer WSe 2 /MoSe 2 and investigate the Mott insulating phase at half filling under an out-of-plane magnetic field. Considering both its orbital and spin Zeeman effects we identify three conventionally ordered phases including a 120° Néel phase, a stripe phase, and an up-up-down phase. For intermediate fields an emergent quantum spin liquid phase is identified with partial spin polarization. We further characterize its topological nature as the v = 1/2 Laughlin CSL through the topological entanglement spectrum and quantized spin pumping under spin flux insertion. In addition, we map out the quantum phase diagram for different twisted angles in an experimentally accessible parameter regime.

Quantum Anomalous Hall Crystal at Fractional Filling of Moiré Superlattices

We predict the emergence of a state of matter with intertwined ferromagnetism, charge order, and topology in fractionally filled moiré superlattice bands. Remarkably, these quantum anomalous Hall crystals exhibit a quantized integer Hall conductance that is different than expected from the filling and Chern number of the band. Microscopic calculations show that this phase is robustly favored at half-filling (𝜈 =1/2) at larger twist angles of the twisted semiconductor bilayer 𝑡⁢MoTe 2 .

Quantum confining excitons with an electrostatic moiré superlattice

Quantum confining excitons has been a persistent challenge in the pursuit of strong exciton interactions and quantum light generation. Unlike electrons, which can be readily controlled via electric fields, imposing strong nanoscale potentials on excitons to enable quantum confinement has proven challenging. In this study, we utilize piezoelectric force microscopy to image the domain structures of twisted hexagonal boron nitride (h – BN), revealing evidence of strong in-plane electric fields at the domain boundaries. By placing a monolayer MoSe 2 only one to two nanometers away from the twisted h – BN interface, we observe energy splitting of neutral excitons and Fermi polarons by several millielectronvolts at the moiré domain boundaries. By directly correlating local structural and optical properties, we attribute such observations to excitons confined in a nanoscale one-dimensional electrostatic potential created by the strong in-plane electric fields at the moiré domain boundaries. Intriguingly, this 1D quantum confinement results in pronounced polarization anisotropy in the excitons’ reflection and emission, persistent to temperatures as high as ~80 Kelvins. Furthermore, these findings open new avenues for exploring and controlling strongly interacting excitons for classical and quantum optoelectronics.

Fractional Quantum Anomalous Hall Effect

The realization of the fractional quantum anomalous Hall effect (FQAHE) in a zero-field fractional Chern insulator is a new advancement in condensed matter physics, resulting from the interplay among strong correlations, topology, and spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking in lattice systems. In this review, we highlight the experimental and theoretical progress toward achieving FQAHE in two material platforms: twisted bilayer MoTe 2 and rhombohedral-stacked multilayer graphene. These systems host narrow topological bands with nontrivial Chern numbers, enabling interaction-driven fractionalized states analogous to the fractional quantum Hall effect, but without external magnetic fields. We discuss how spontaneous ferromagnetism, moiré lattice reconstruction, and band topological effects underpin the emergence of FQAHE in twisted MoTe 2 . We describe experimental discoveries of zero-field fractional Chern insulators in both transport and optical experiments, as well as signatures of composite Fermi liquids and higher-energy Chern band, which may shed light on engineering nonabelian states. In rhombohedral graphene/hexagonal boron nitride moiré superlattices, we review the recent observations of fractionally quantized Hall resistance, connections between FQAHE and extended quantum anomalous Hall phases, and the coexistence of superconductivity and FQAHE. Furthermore, these discoveries not only deepen our understanding of strongly correlated topological matter but also open new frontiers for exploring nonabelian anyons, fault-tolerant quantum computation, and topological opto-spintronics free of magnetic fields.

Structural Assessment of Fluorine, Chlorine, Bromine, Iodine, and Hydroxide Substitutions in Lead Arsenate Apatites (Mimetites)–Pb 5 (AsO 4 ) 3 X

Five lead-arsenate apatites (mimetites)-Pb 5 (AsO 4 ) 3 X—where X denotes fluorine (F), chlorine (Cl), bromine (Br), iodine (I), and hydroxide (OH)—were synthesized via precipitation from aqueous solutions. The crystal structures were determined through Rietveld refinement of powder synchrotron X-ray data. All the compounds crystallized in the hexagonal class symmetry (space group P6 3 /m). The Rietveld refinement indicated that mimetite-Cl, -Br, -I, and -OH had an anion deficiency at position X. Substitution of halogens in a mimetite structure brought about systematic changes in unit-cell parameters, interatomic distances, and metaprism twist angles φ, proportional to the substituted halogen’s ionic radius. Mimetite-OH did not follow the linear correlations determined within the series. Twist angle φ, a useful device for monitoring changes in apatite topology, ranged from 20.34° for mimetite-F to 11.42° for mimetite-I. The geometric method has been proposed for determining the diameter of hexagonal channels hosting halogens in apatites. A comparison of the results with halogenated pyromorphites showed similar systematic trends: the substitutions in mimetites have comparable effect on the interatomic distances as in their phosphorous analogues.

More Powerful Twistron Carbon Nanotube Yarn Mechanical Energy Harvesters

We report that stretching a coiled carbon nanotube (CNT) yarn can provide large, reversible electrochemical capacitance changes, which convert mechanical energy to electricity. Here, it is shown that the performance of these “twistron” harvesters can be increased by optimizing the alignment of precursor CNT forests, plastically stretching the precursor twisted yarn, applying much higher tensile loads during precoiling twist than for coiling, using electrothermal pulse annealing under tension, and incorporating reduced graphene oxide nanoplates. The peak output power for a 1 and a 30 Hz sinusoidal deformation are 0.73 and 3.19 kW kg -1 , respectively, which are 24- and 13-fold that of previous twistron harvesters at these respective frequencies. This performance at 30 Hz is over 12-fold that of other prior-art mechanical energy harvesters for frequencies between 0.1 and 600 Hz. The maximum energy conversion efficiency is 7.2-fold that for previous twistrons. Twistron anode and cathode yarn arrays are stretched 180° out-of-phase by locating them in the negative and positive compressibility directions of hinged wine-rack frames, thereby doubling the output voltage and reducing the input mechanical energy.

Terahertz Chiral Metamaterials Enabling Broadband Polarization Conversion Using Polarization Guiding Effect

Polarization control plays a vital role in terahertz (THz) photonics, enabling a wide range of applications from imaging and spectroscopy to sensing and wireless communication. However, conventional polarization control methods at THz frequencies are limited by narrow operational bandwidths and excessive absorption losses. In this work, we present a broadband THz polarization control based on the polarization guiding effect. We design and fabricate a THz polarization rotator capable of rotating incident linear polarization by 90°. The device consists of 24 twistingly stacked silicon–air metagrating layers that introduce a large degree of form birefringence, with each metagrating layer being 280 µm thick and sequentially twisted by 3.75°. Numerical simulations using the Berreman 4 × 4 method predict broadband operation of the device. Experimental validation using THz time-domain spectroscopy confirms efficient and broadband 90° polarization rotation from 0.2 to 1.25 THz. Based on this concept, we further propose THz Q-plates for the generation of broadband structured vector beams with radial and azimuthal polarization states. This work offers a scalable, material-agnostic platform for advanced THz polarization manipulation and vector beam engineering, opening new pathways for next-generation THz photonic devices.

Hierarchical Self‐Assembly of Multidimensional Functional Materials from Sequence‐Defined Peptoids

Abstract Hierarchical self‐assembly represents a powerful strategy for the fabrication of functional materials across various length scales. However, achieving precise formation of functional hierarchical assemblies remains a significant challenge and requires a profound understanding of molecular assembly interactions. In this study, we present a molecular‐level understanding of the hierarchical assembly of sequence‐defined peptoids into multidimensional functional materials, including twisted nanotube bundles serving as a highly efficient artificial light harvesting system. By employing synchrotron‐based powder X‐ray diffraction and analyzing single crystal structures of model compounds, we elucidated the molecular packing and mechanisms underlying the assembly of peptoids into multidimensional nanostructures. Our findings demonstrate that incorporating aromatic functional groups, such as tetraphenyl ethylene (TPE), at the termini of assembling peptoid sequences promotes the formation of twisted bundles of nanotubes and nanosheets, thus enabling the creation of a highly efficient artificial light harvesting system. This research exemplifies the potential of leveraging sequence‐defined synthetic polymers to translate microscopic molecular structures into macroscopic assemblies. It holds promise for the development of functional materials with precisely controlled hierarchical structures and designed functions.

Chiral Teropyrenes: Synthesis, Structure, and Spectroscopic Studies

Abstract We present the inaugural synthesis of a chiral teropyrene achieved through a four‐fold alkyne benzannulation catalyzed by InCl 3 , resulting in good yields. The product underwent thorough characterization using FT‐Raman and FT‐IR spectroscopies, demonstrating a close agreement with calculated spectra. X‐ray crystallographic analysis unveiled a notable twist in the molecule‘s backbone, with an end‐to‐end twist angle of 51°, consistent with computational predictions. Experimentally determined enantiomeric inversion barriers revealed a significant energy barrier of 23 kcal/mol, facilitating the isolation of enantiomers for analysis by circular dichroism (CD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) spectroscopies. These findings mark significant strides in the synthesis and characterization of chiral teropyrenes, offering insights into their structural and spectroscopic properties.

Asymptotically Free AdS 3 /CFT 2

We propose a new AdS 3 /CFT 2 duality, in which the bulk string theory has a target spacetime AdS 3 times a squashed three-sphere $S$$^{3}_{b}$, and the dual CFT 2 is a symmetric product of sigma models on R Φ × $S$$^{3}_{b}$, deformed by a Φ-dependent Z 2 twist operator. The duality maps the asymptotic region of AdS 3 to the region Φ → ∞, where the twist interaction in the CFT 2 turns off. The AdS 3 backgrounds in question have R AdS < ℓ s , and so lie on the string side of the string/black hole correspondence transition. As a consequence, the high energy density of states consists of a string gas in AdS 3 rather than an ensemble of BTZ black holes. Furthermore, this property allows us to derive the dual CFT 2 by a systematic analysis of the worldsheet string theory on AdS 3 .

Moments of axial-vector GPD from lattice QCD: quark helicity, orbital angular momentum, and spin-orbit correlation

In this work, we present a lattice QCD calculation of the Mellin moments of the twist-2 axial-vector generalized parton distribution (GPD), $\overset{\sim }{H}\left(x,\xi, t\right)$ , at zero skewness, ξ, with multiple values of the momentum transfer, t. Our analysis employs the short-distance factorization framework on ratio-scheme renormalized quasi-GPD matrix elements. The calculations are based on an N f = 2 + 1 + 1 twisted mass fermions ensemble with clover improvement, a lattice spacing of a = 0.093 fm, and a pion mass of m π = 260 MeV. We consider both the iso-vector and iso-scalar cases, utilizing next-to-leading-order perturbative matching while omitting the disconnected contributions and gluon mixing in the iso-scalar case. For the first time, we determine the Mellin moments of $\overset{\sim }{H}$ up to the fifth order. From these moments, we discuss the quark helicity and orbital angular momentum contributions to the nucleon spin, as well as the spin-orbit correlations of the quarks. Additionally, we perform a Fourier transform over the momentum transfer, which allows us to explore the spin structure in the impact-parameter space.

Precision microstate counting for the entropy of wrapped M5-branes

We study the large N expansion of twisted partition functions of 3d N = 2 superconformal field theories arising from N M5-branes wrapped on a hyperbolic 3- manifold, M 3 . Via the 3d-3d correspondence, the partition functions of these 3d N = 2 superconformal field theories are related to simple topological invariants on the 3-manifold. The partition functions can be expressed using only classical and one-loop perturbative invariants of PSL(N, C) Chern-Simons theory around irreducible flat connections on M 3 . Using mathematical results on the asymptotics of the invariants, we compute the twisted partition functions in the large N limit including perturbative corrections to all orders in 1/N . Surprisingly, the perturbative expansion terminates at finite order. The leading part of the partition function is of order N 3 and agrees with the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the dual black holes. The subleading part, in particular the log N -terms in the field theory partition function is found to precisely match the one-loop quantum corrections in the dual eleven dimensional supergravity. The field theory results of other terms in 1/N provide a stringent prediction for higher order corrections in the holographic dual, which is M-theory.

Cosmology meets cohomology

The cosmological polytope and bootstrap programs have revealed interesting connections between positive geometries, modern on-shell methods and bootstrap principles studied in the amplitudes community with the wavefunction of the Universe in toy models of FRW cosmologies. To compute these FRW correlators, one often faces integrals that are too difficult to evaluate by direct integration. Borrowing from the Feynman integral community, the method of (canonical) differential equations provides an efficient alternative for evaluating these integrals. Moreover, we further develop our geometric understanding of these integrals by describing the associated relative twisted cohomology. Leveraging recent progress in our understanding of relative twisted cohomology in the Feynman integral community, we give an algorithm to predict the basis size and simplify the computation of the differential equations satisfied by FRW correlators.

TMD factorisation for diffractive jets in photon-nucleus interactions

Abstract Using the colour dipole picture and the colour glass condensate effective theory, we study the diffractive production of two or three jets via coherent photon-nucleus interactions at high energy. We consider the hard regime where the photon virtuality and/or the transverse momenta of the produced jets are much larger than the saturation momentumQ s of the nuclear target. We show that, despite this hardness, the leading-twist contributions are controlled by relatively large parton configurations, with transverse sizesR~ 1/Q s , which undergo strong scattering and probe gluon saturation. We demonstrate that these leading-twist contributions admit transverse-momentum dependent (TMD) factorisation, in terms of quark and gluon diffractive TMD distribution functions, for which we obtain explicit expressions from first principles. We go beyond our previous work by evaluating the contributions involving the quark diffractive distributions and by establishing that their DGLAP evolution emerges via controlled calculations within the colour dipole picture. We find the same expression for the quark diffractive TMD in two different processes (semi-inclusive diffraction and the diffractive production of quark-gluon dijets), thus demonstrating its universality.

Crossing symmetry, transcendentality and the Regge behaviour of 1d CFTs

We develop the technology for Polyakov-Mellin (PM) bootstrap in one- dimensional conformal field theories (CFT 1 ). By adding appropriate contact terms, we bootstrap various effective field theories in AdS 2 and analytically compute the CFT data to one loop. The computation can be extended to higher orders in perturbation theory, if we ignore mixing, for any external dimension. We develop PM bootstrap for O(N) theories and derive the necessary contact terms for such theories (which also involves a new higher gradient contact term absent for N = 1). We perform cross-checks which include considering the diagonal limit of the 2d Ising model in terms of the 1d PM blocks. As an independent check of the validity of the results obtained with PM bootstrap, we propose a suitable basis of transcendental functions, which allows to fix the four-point correlators of identical scalar primaries completely, up to a finite number of ambiguities related to the number of contact terms in the PM basis. We perform this analysis both at tree level (with and without exchanges) and at one loop. We also derive expressions for the corresponding CFT data in terms of harmonic sums. Finally, we consider the Regge limit of one-dimensional correlators and derive a precise connection between the latter and the large-twist limit of CFT data. Exploiting this result, we study the crossing equation in the three OPE limits and derive some universal constraints for the large-twist limit of CFT data in Regge-bounded theories with a finite number of exchanges.
