In situ characterization of metastable Pb3O5 and Pb2O3 phases during thermal decomposition of PbO2 to PbO

Nonstoichiometric lead oxides play a key role in the formation and cycling of the positive electrodes in a lead acid battery. These phases have been linked to the underutilization of the positive active material but also play a key role in the battery’s cycle life, providing inter-particle adhesion and the connection to the underlying lead grid. Similar phases have previously been identified by mass loss or color change during thermal annealing of PbO2 to PbO, suggesting that at least two intermediate PbOx phases exist. Using multiple in situ analysis techniques (powder diffraction, x-ray absorption, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) and ex situ nuclear magnetic resonance measurements, the structural conversion and changes in the lead oxidation states were identified during this process. Isolation of the PbOx phases enabled confirmation of Pb3O5 and Pb2O3 by diffraction and the first 207Pb NMR measurement of these intermediates.

Mode-Selective Vibrational Energy Transfer Dynamics in 1,3,5-Trinitroperhydro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) Thin Films

The coupling of inter- and intramolecular vibrations plays a critical role in initiating chemistry during the shock-to-detonation transition in energetic materials. In this work, we report on the subpicosecond to subnanosecond vibrational energy transfer (VET) dynamics of the solid energetic material 1,3,5-trinitroperhydro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) by using broadband, ultrafast infrared transient absorption spectroscopy. Experiments reveal VET occurring on three distinct time scales: subpicosecond, 5 ps, and 200 ps. The ultrafast appearance of signal at all probed modes in the mid-infrared suggests strong anharmonic coupling of all vibrations in the solid, whereas the long-lived evolution demonstrates that VET is incomplete, and thus thermal equilibrium is not attained, even on the 100 ps time scale. Density functional theory and classical molecular dynamics simulations provide valuable insights into the experimental observations, revealing compression-insensitive time scales for the initial VET dynamics of high-frequency vibrations and drastically extended relaxation times for low-frequency phonon modes under lattice compression. Mode selectivity of the longest dynamics suggests coupling of the N–N and axial NO2 stretching modes with the long-lived, excited phonon bath.

Understanding the Effect of Single Atom Cationic Defect Sites in an Al 2 O 3 (012) Surface on Altering Selenate and Sulfate Adsorption: An Ab Initio Study

Adsorption is a promising under-the-sink selenate remediation technique for distributed water systems. Recently it was shown that adsorption induced water network rearrangement control adsorption energetics on the α-Al 2 O 3 (012) surface. Here, we aim to elucidate the relative importance of the water network effects and surface cation identity on controlling selenate and sulfate adsorption energy using density functional theory calculations. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations predicted the adsorption energies of selenate and sulfate on nine transition metal cations (Sc–Cu) and two alkali metal cations (Ga and In) in the α-Al 2 O 3 (012) surface under simulated acidic and neutral pH conditions. We find that the water network effects had a larger impact on the adsorption energy than the cationic identity. However, cation identity secondarily controlled adsorption. Most cations decreased the adsorption energy, weakening the overall performance, the larger Sc and In cations enabled inner-sphere adsorption in acidic conditions because they relaxed outward from the surface, providing more space for adsorption. Additionally, only Ti induced Se selectivity over S by reducing the adsorbing selenate to selenite but not reducing the sulfate. Altogether, this study indicates that tuning water network structure will likely have a larger impact than tuning cation–selenate interactions for increasing adsorbate effectiveness.

Density Functional Theory Study of Iron–Oxygen Divacancies in Magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 ) and Hematite (Fe 2 O 3 )

Density functional theory (DFT) calculations are employed to investigate the formation energies, charge redistribution, and binding energies of iron–oxygen divacancies in magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 ) and hematite (Fe 2 O 3 ). For magnetite, we focus on the low-temperature phase to explore variations with local environments. Building on previous DFT calculations of the variations in formation energies for oxygen vacancies with local charge and spin order in magnetite, we extend this analysis to include octahedral iron vacancies before analyzing the iron–oxygen divacancies. We also assessed the relative stability of iron–oxygen divacancies by comparing their formation energies with those of individual vacancies. Our findings reveal a significant energetic driving force for the formation of divacancy clusters, particularly in magnetite, where divacancies in the +1 charge state exhibit formation energies comparable to those of neutral iron vacancies under oxidizing conditions. In hematite, the results indicate a strong tendency for oxygen vacancies to bind to iron vacancies. These results highlight the significance of iron–oxygen vacancy complexes in the transport properties of iron oxides, with particular relevance to diffusion mechanisms under irradiation conditions.

A Metastable CaSH 3 Phase Composed of HS Honeycomb Sheets that is Superconducting Under Pressure

Evolutionary searches have predicted a number of ternary Ca–S–H phases that could be synthesized at pressures of 100–300 GPa. P6 3 /mmc CaSH 2 , Pnma CaSH 2 , Cmc2 1 CaSH 6 , and I$\bar{4}$CaSH 20 were composed of a Ca–S lattice along with H 2 molecules coordinated in a “side-on” fashion to Ca. The H–H bond lengths in these semiconducting phases were elongated because of H 2 σ → Ca d donation, and Ca d → H 2 σ* back-donation, via a Kubas-like mechanism. P$\bar{6}$m2 CaSH 3 , consisting of two-dimensional HS and CaH 2 sheets, was metastable and metallic above 128 GPa. The presence of van Hove singularities increased its density of states at the Fermi level and concomitantly the superconducting critical temperature, which was estimated to be as high as ~100 K at 128 GPa. Furthermore, this work will inspire the search for superconductivity in materials based upon honeycomb HX (X = S, Se, Te) and MH 2 (M = Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba) layers under pressure.

Factors Affecting the Electron Conductivity in Single Crystal Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 and Li 7 P 3 S 11

One of the serious challenges in all solid-state Li ion batteries is neutral Li intrusion into the solid-state electrolyte that can ultimately cause catastrophic failure. One possibility for this is due to n-type electron conductivity that induces the reaction Li + + e – → Li 0 at sites where the potential is less than the Li + /Li potential. This paper reports hybrid density functional theory calculations of the electronic conductivity in two prototype single crystalline solid-state electrolytes, cubic Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (c-LLZO) and Li 7 P 3 S 11 (LPS). The formation energies of important point defects that can affect electron conductivity are determined, and we find that the mechanism of n-type electron conductivity for both solid-state electrolytes is via “small” electron polaron hopping, where the quotes signify that substantial Li ion rearrangement is associated with the polaron formation and its migration. In both electrolytes, the formation energies for the small polarons at the Fermi energy are too high to generate measurable electron conductivity at room temperature. For c-LLZO, the concentration of electron polarons necessary to ensure charge neutrality from positively charged oxygen vacancies formed in synthesis can be significantly higher. Hence, the electron conductivity could be significant when measured with ion-blocking metal electrodes, and we discuss how the synthesis conditions could affect this magnitude. However, in the solid-state battery, these polarons are replaced by negatively charged Li vacancies so that the electron conductivity should remain minimal. For LPS single crystals, the inherent minimal electron conductivity is independent of synthesis conditions. Here we also show that the cost of forming Li 0 in bulk c-LLZO is enormous due to strain effects so that it could only potentially form at voids, grain boundaries, or around vacancy defects which relax the lattice strain.

Unveiling the Interfacial Reconstruction Mechanism Enabling Stable Growth of the Delafossite PdCoO 2 on Al 2 O 3 and LaAlO 3

Delafossites, composed of noble metal (A + ) and strongly correlated sublayers (BO 2 – ), form natural superlattices with highly anisotropic properties. These properties hold significant promise for various applications, but their exploitation hinges on the successful growth of high-quality thin films on suitable substrates. Unfortunately, the unique lattice geometry of delafossites presents a significant challenge to thin-film fabrication. Different delafossites grow differently, even when deposited on the same substrate, ranging from successful epitaxy to complete growth suppression. These variations often lack a clear correlation to obvious causes like lattice mismatch. Unidentified stabilization mechanisms appear to enable growth in certain cases, allowing these materials to form stable thin films or act as buffer layers for subsequent delafossite growth. This study employs advanced scanning transmission electron microscopy techniques to investigate the nucleation mechanism underlying the stable growth of PdCoO 2 films on Al 2 O 3 and LaAlO 3 substrates grown via molecular-beam epitaxy. Our findings reveal the presence of a secondary phase within the substrate surface that stabilizes the films. This mechanism deviates from the conventional understanding of strain relief mechanisms at oxide heterostructure interfaces and differs significantly from those observed for Cu-based delafossites.

Dithieno[3,2-c:3′,2′‑ h ][2,6]naphthyridine-4,9(5H,10H)-dione-Based Conjugated Polymers for High Stable n‑Type Organic Electrochemical Transistors

Amide/imide-based conjugated polymers have been utilized as n-type OECT materials and have demonstrated promising device performance. However, their performance remains insufficient in terms of both efficiency and stability, which limits their practical applications. The development of conjugated polymers based on amide and imide groups represents a promising approach to address this issue. Here, in this study, we introduced dithieno[3,2-c:3′,2′-h][2,6]naphthyridine-4,9(5H,10H)-dione (TVTDA) into the design of the OECT materials for the first time. By copolymerizing it with (E)-2,2′-(ethene-1,2-diyl)bis(thiophene-3-carbonitrile), we prepared two polymers, TVTDA-2CNTVT-ST and TVTDA-2CNTVT-BR, which contain linear or branched ethylene glycol side chains, respectively. OECT devices based on these polymers demonstrate n-type charge transport characteristics, achieving promising μC* values of 7.17 and 26.5 F cm –1 V –1 s –1 for TVTDA-2CNTVT-ST and TVTDA-2CNTVT-BR, respectively. The higher electron mobility and μC* of TVTDA-2CNTVT-BR can be attributed to its mixed edge-on and face-on stacking mode, larger crystalline coherence length, and larger domain size in the thin film. To our delight, the OECT devices based on both polymers exhibit good operational stability after operating in an aqueous solution for 2000 s, with current retention rates exceeding 93%, representing the high level among the OECT devices based on amide/imide-conjugated polymers. Our study demonstrates that the TVTDA unit holds great potential for constructing high-performance n-type OECT materials.

Development, Application, and Mechanistic Interrogation of a Dual Ni Catalysis Approach to Photoredox-Based C(sp 3 )–C(sp 3 ) Cross-Coupling

The installation of alkyl substituents such as methyl groups is a crucial tactic for the synthesis and diversification of medicinal compounds with improved pharmacological profiles. However, strategies that leverage methyl radical for C(sp 3 ) methylation remain underdeveloped due to the challenge of obtaining cross-selectivity between fleeting aliphatic radicals and alkyl electrophiles. Here, we report the development, application, and interrogation of a conceptually novel mechanistic framework for C(sp 3 )–Me bond formation using two distinct Ni catalysts capable of cross-coupling sterically and electronically diverse alkyl halides (chlorides and bromides) with methyl radical generated photocatalytically from benzaldehyde dimethyl acetal. Furthermore, by modifying the alkyl substituents on the acetal coupling partner, we demonstrate cross-couplings beyond methylation to access an array of 1°–1° and 1°–2° alkyl–alkyl bonds. Experimental and computational mechanistic studies provide support for cooperativity between an in situ-generated (bpy)Ni I (X) catalyst that facilitates XAT and inner-sphere C–C bond formation and a (Tp*)Ni II (acac) cocatalyst that captures methyl radical and engages in concurrent outer-sphere S H 2 coupling.

Millimeter-wave dielectric tunability driven by topological polar structure switching in PbTiO 3 /SrTiO 3 superlattices

Dielectric tunability induced by an external electric field in materials underpins radio frequency signal modulation devices such as phase shifters, which are critical components in wireless communication and sensing systems. However, the tunability and integrability of current devices have yet to be enhanced for emerging applications, particularly at millimeter-wave frequencies. Here, we demonstrate that topological polar structures formed in PbTiO 3 /SrTiO 3 superlattices exhibit large tunable in-plane dielectric properties, as determined by their multiscale structural configurations and polarization switching behaviors. Under a moderate field of 30 kV cm −1 , the dipole wave structure maintains a tunability exceeding 15% at 70 GHz and above 8% over the measured range up to 110 GHz, contrasting with the weakly tunable flux closure structure. Based on in situ structural characterizations and molecular dynamics simulations, we delineate the polarization switching processes and elucidate the mechanisms underlying the observed tunable millimeter-wave dielectric responses. Our results provide new insights into the high-frequency dielectric properties of topological polar phases, potentially broadening the versatility of these materials in next-generation integrated electronic applications.

Enhancement of Ni–(Y 2 O 3 ) 0.08 (ZrO 2 ) 0.92 fuel electrode performance by infiltration of Ce 0.8 Gd 0.2 O 2–δ nanoparticles

This paper addresses the use of Ce 0.8 Gd 0.2 O 2–δ (GDC) infiltration into the Ni–(Y 2 O 3 ) 0.08 (ZrO 2 ) 0.92 (YSZ) fuel electrode of solid oxide cells (SOCs) for improving their electrochemical performance in fuel cell and electrolysis operation. Although doped ceria infiltration into Ni–YSZ has recently been shown to improve the electrode performance and stability, the mechanisms defining how GDC impacts electrochemical characteristics are not fully delineated. Furthermore, the electrochemical characteristics have not yet been determined over the full range of conditions normally encountered in fuel cell and electrolysis operation. Here we present a study of both symmetric and full cells aimed at understanding the electrochemical mechanisms of GDC-modified Ni–YSZ over a wide range of fuel compositions and temperatures. Single-step GDC infiltration at an appropriate loading substantially reduced the polarization resistance of Ni–YSZ electrodes in electrolyte-supported cells, as measured using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) at various temperatures (600–800 °C) in a range of H 2 O–H 2 mixtures (3–90 vol% H 2 O). Fuel-electrode-supported cells had significant concentration polarization due to the thick Ni–YSZ supports. Here, a distribution of relaxation times approach is used to develop a physically-based electrochemical model; the results show that GDC reduces the reaction resistance associated with three-phase boundaries, but also appears to improve oxygen transport in the electrode. Increasing the H 2 O fraction in the H 2 –H 2 O fuel mixture reduced both the three-phase boundary resistance and the gas diffusion resistance for Ni–YSZ; with GDC infiltration, the electrode resistance showed less variation with fuel composition. GDC infiltration improved the performance of fuel-electrode-supported full cells, which yielded a maximum power density of 2.28 W cm –2 in fuel cell mode and an electrolysis current density at 1.3 V of 2.22 A cm –2 , both at 800°C.
