Nonlinear Pressurization and Modal Analysis Procedure for Dynamic Modeling of Inflatable Structures

An introduction and set of guidelines for finite element dynamic modeling of nonrigidized inflatable structures is provided. A two-step approach is presented, involving 1) nonlinear static pressurization of the structure and updating of the stiffness matrix and 2) hear normal modes analysis using the updated stiffness. Advantages of this approach are that it provides physical realism in modeling of pressure stiffening, and it maintains the analytical convenience of a standard bear eigensolution once the stiffness has been modified. Demonstration of the approach is accomplished through the creation and test verification of an inflated cylinder model using a large commercial finite element code. Good frequency and mode shape comparisons are obtained with test data and previous modeling efforts, verifying the accuracy of the technique. Problems encountered in the application of the approach, as well as their solutions, are discussed in detail.

Towards Requirements in Systems Engineering for Aerospace IVHM Design

Health management (HM) technologies have been employed for safety critical system for decades, but a coherent systematic process to integrate HM into the system design is not yet clear. Consequently, in most cases, health management resorts to be an after-thought or 'band-aid' solution. Moreover, limited guidance exists for carrying out systems engineering (SE) on the subject of writing requirements for designs with integrated vehicle health management (IVHM). It is well accepted that requirements are key to developing a successful IVHM system right from the concept stage to development, verification, utilization, and support. However, writing requirements for systems with IVHM capability have unique challenges that require the designers to look beyond their own domains and consider the constraints and specifications of other interlinked systems. In this paper we look at various stages in the SE process and identify activities specific to IVHM design and development. More importantly, several relevant questions are posed that system engineers must address at various design and development stages. Addressing these questions should provide some guidance to systems engineers towards writing IVHM related requirements to ensure that appropriate IVHM functions are built into the system design.

Quantifying the Value of Grid-Interactive Efficient Buildings through Field Study: Preprint

Quantifying the annual energy impacts of efficient technologies in commercial buildings has been well established by the building science field. As we move toward enabling grid-interactive efficient buildings (GEB) targeting flexible building operation and carbon reduction, quantification methods to evaluate time-sensitive peak load and emissions impact are much less defined. A number of national laboratories are working to field validate four different GEB software solutions that provide the capability to control multiple building end-use systems in multiple load flexibility modes (i.e., energy efficiency, load shed, load shift, and possible load modulation at the second to sub-second level). To guide the laboratory leads in effective measurement and verification (M&V) practices, two of the laboratories collaborated to define metrics to quantify the impacts of flexible load control on building demand, utility costs, carbon emissions, facility management, and occupant comfort. This paper summarizes the proposed metrics to quantify peak load and emission impacts in the field, decision parameters, approaches to accurately conduct M&V, lessons learned, and outstanding needs and next steps.
