A novel method may reveal bulk metallic glass compressive ductility trends in high data rate nanoindentation

Recent methods allow novel amorphous alloy compositions to be rapidly manufactured at small scale; however, obtaining materials properties such as compressive ductility from these smaller specimens has remained a challenge. Here, we suggest a potential high-throughput nanoindentation method that may be able to rapidly characterize the relative compressive ductility between these alloys based on their serration characteristics. The properties of emergent serrations, when interpreted in a simple micromechanical stress relaxation model, may order these materials by their compressive plastic strain to failure. These results are consistent with the ordering obtained from compressed specimens as well as with model simulations, suggesting that this model may be broadly useful for interpreting compressive ductility from nanoindentation serrations. After it is validated on more materials, this new method will match the rapid pace of amorphous alloy development, thus allowing metallic glass properties to be fine-tuned for each application prior to scale prototyping.

Mixed-species charge and baryon balance functions studies with PYTHIA

Mixed species charge and baryon balance functions are computed based on proton-proton ( p p ) collisions simulated with the PYTHIA8 model. Simulations are performed with selected values of the collision energy s and the Monash tune and the ropes and shoving modes of PYTHIA8 to explore whether such measurements provide useful new information and constraints on mechanisms of particle production in p p collisions. Charge balance functions are studied based on mixed pairs of pions, kaons, and protons, whereas baryon balance functions are computed for mixed low mass strange and nonstrange baryons. Both charge and baryon balance functions of mixed particle pairs feature shapes and amplitudes that sensitively depend on the particle considered owing largely to the particle production mechanisms implemented in PYTHIA. The evolution of balance functions integrals with the longitudinal width of the acceptance are presented and one finds that sums of such integrals for a given reference particle obey expected sum rules for both charge and baryon balance functions. Additionally, both types of balance functions are found to evolve in shape and amplitude with increasing collision energy s and the PYTHIA tunes considered. Isopod (inverse Optimization And Design): Moose-based Application For Performing Inverse Optimization On Multiphysics Modeling And Simulation

ISOPOD (InverSe OPtimizatiOn and Design) will be a MOOSE (Multiphysics Object Oriented Simulation Environment)-based framework which will iteratively estimate the parameters by minimizing the difference between simulated and experimental observables. While inverse optimization has long been used for parameter estimation, the unique feature of ISOPOD is rapid solution of new inverse problems, leading to accelerated Research, Development and Demonstration (RD&D) for complex parameter estimation problems. This will be achieved by extending the software structure of MOOSE to inverse optimization, as well as building on the unique automatic differentiation feature of MOOSE.

PCMDI Metrics Package

The Program for Climate Model Diagnosis & Intercomparison (PCMDI) Metrics Package (PMP) is used to provide "quick-look" objective comparisons of Earth System Models (ESMs) with one another and available observations. The PMP provides a diverse suite of analysis utilities each of which produce summary statistics that gauge the consistency between climate model simulations and available observations. The primary application of the PMP is to evaluate simulations from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP). It can also be used to provide objective performance summaries during the model development process as well as selected research purposes.

High Penetration Power Electronics Grid: Modeling and Simulation Gap Analysis

Increased penetration of power electronics in the grid is happening through development of high-power drives (like in Type 3 or 4 wind turbines, industrial drives, etc.), high-voltage direct current (HVdc) systems, flexible alternating current transmission systems (FACTS), energy storage systems (ESSs), inverter-based renewables like solar and wind, electric vehicle chargers, and other technologies. Ongoing research and development in new power electronic technologies including, but not limited to, solid-state power substations (SSPS), extreme fast charging (XFC), solid-state transformers, and multi-port power electronics that integrate multiple sources/loads will further increase penetration levels. To ensure stakeholders can integrate high penetration of power electronic technologies safely and reliably requires tools and methods to assess and evaluate their impact on the grid. Objectives: This report surveys, assesses, and analyzes commercially available and open-source tools that can support the assessment and evaluation of power electronics in future grids with high penetration levels. The study includes aspects that range from power flow analysis to dynamics evaluation (including hardware-in-the-loop – HIL testing) for such systems. The challenges and gaps associated with the current generation of toolsets available to assess the technical impact of introducing high penetration of power electronics are reported. The method is summarized in Figure ES-1.
