In this work we demonstrate a theory-driven, novel dual-shell coating system of Li 2 SrSiO 4 and Al 2 O 3 , achieved via a facile and scalable sol-gel technique on LiCoO 2 electrode particles. The optimal thickness of each coating can lead to increased specific capacity (~185 mAh/g at 0.5 C-rate) at a cut-off potential of 4.5 V, and greater cycling stability at very high C rates (up to 10 C) in half-cells with lithium metal. The mechanism of this superior performance was investigated using a combination of X-ray and electron characterization methods. It shows that the results of this investigation can inform future studies to identify still better dual-shell coating schemes, achieved by such industrially feasible techniques, for application on similar, nickel-rich cathode materials.
In the development of a conditioning process for cesium-bearing sorbents from the decontamination of aqueous waste streams, the treatment of a granular material composed of (Cs,K) 2 CuFe(CN) 6 loaded onto mesoporous silica particles has been investigated in an additive-free two-step conditioning process involving (i) calcination at 1000 °C to remove volatile species and (ii) densification by spark plasma sintering. A 92.0 % dense pellet was obtained after 10 min sintering at 850 °C under 100 MPa. Density and microstructural measurements indicate that densification is first driven by the viscous flow of a vitreous phase containing Cs, formed during calcination. Additionally, the density of the sample then increases further during sintering by grain boundary diffusion. However, a limited but non negligible part of cesium is lost during densification.
This study explores mineral carbonation of industrial stainless steelmaking slags and relevant synthetic constituent minerals via in situ pressurized X-ray diffraction, to clarify carbonation reaction pathways and efficiency for carbon storage and waste valorization. The primary mineral phases of Argon Oxygen Decarburization (AOD) and Continuous Casting (CC) slags, namely, åkermanite, bredigite, cuspidine, merwinite, and β- and γ-C 2 S, were reacted in a custom-built beryllium-capped XRD reactor filled with either water-saturated (wet) subcritical CO 2 (g), or wet supercritical CO 2(SC) , in a series of carbonation experiments. Formation of calcite and aragonite was observed for most Ca-bearing minerals, transient precipitation of metastable vaterite was observed, while carbonation of AOD and CC slags in CO 2(SC) resulted in hydrated crystalline calcium carbonates and indirect evidence of amorphous carbonate. Overall, results obtained suggest that low-pressure subcritical carbonation routes are attractive for standalone slag carbonation processes, while high-pressure supercritical carbonation routes are amiable to symbiotic integration with CO 2(SC) -generating green technologies.

In a ground-interacting nuclear explosion, elements derived from environmental and anthropogenic material, such as iron, silicon, and aluminum, can be incorporated into the fireball. When significant amounts of metals are entrained, the resulting melt may display immiscible textures. The composition of these textures is a record of the temperature of formation and cooling rates (or thermodynamic stability) of the melts and can provide unique constraints on the early cooling conditions of these events. Here, a thermodynamic approach using calculated phase diagrams, the CALPHAD method, is used to predict temperature and composition ranges where stable liquid immiscibility might result in the textures observed in nuclear fallout glass. Sensitivity of the immiscibility to the presence of relative Al, Ca, and Mg content is also explored and compared to fallout samples, and partition coefficients are introduced to understand the preferred distribution of components into each liquid phase.
Conjugated polymer/silica nanocomposites with hexagonal, cubic, or lamellar mesoscopic order were synthesized by self-assembly using polymerizable amphiphilic diacetylene molecules as both structure-directing agents and monomers. The self-assembly procedure is rapid and incorporates the organic monomers uniformly within a highly ordered, inorganic environment. By tailoring the size of the oligo(ethylene glycol) headgroup of the diacetylene-containing surfactant, we varied the resulting self-assembled mesophases of the composite material. The nanostructured inorganic host altered the diacetylene polymerization behavior, and the resulting nanocomposites show unique thermo-, mechano-, and solvatochromic properties. Polymerization of the incorporated surfactants resulted in polydiacetylene (PDA)/silica nanocomposites that were optically transparent and mechanically robust. Molecular modeling and quantum calculations and (13)C spin-lattice relaxation times (T(1)) of the PDA/silica nanocomposites indicated that the surfactant monomers can be uniformly organized into precise spatial arrangements prior to polymerization. Nanoindentation and gas transport experiments showed that these nanocomposite films have increased hardness and reduced permeability as compared to pure PDA. Our work demonstrates polymerizable surfactant/silica self-assembly to be an efficient, general approach to the formation of nanostructured conjugated polymers. The nanostructured inorganic framework serves to protect, stabilize, and orient the polymer, mediate its performance, and provide sufficient mechanical and chemical stability to enable integration of conjugated polymers into devices and microsystems.

The synthesis and characterization of Fe-bearing phase E and phase E' demonstrate that the phase E-type structures can be rather compliant and complex, and that as we further explore the temperature-pressure-composition space, other types of structures that are similar to or related to the structure of phase E may be discovered.
Using radio Doppler data from a single encounter (C3) of the Galileo spacecraft with Callisto, we have reported previously that this outermost Galilean moon might be undifferentiated.
