In-flight simulation investigation of rotorcraft pitch-roll cross coupling

An in-flight simulation experiment investigating the handling qualities effects of the pitch-roll cross-coupling characteristic of single-main-rotor helicopters is described. The experiment was conducted using the NASA/Army CH-47B variable stability helicopter with an explicit-model-following control system. The research is an extension of an earlier ground-based investigation conducted on the NASA Ames Research Center's Vertical Motion Simulator. The model developed for the experiment is for an unaugmented helicopter with cross-coupling implemented using physical rotor parameters. The details of converting the model from the simulation to use in flight are described. A frequency-domain comparison of the model and actual aircraft responses showing the fidelity of the in-flight simulation is described. The evaluation task was representative of nap-of-the-Earth maneuvering flight. The results indicate that task demands are important in determining allowable levels of coupling. In addition, on-axis damping characteristics influence the frequency-dependent characteristics of coupling and affect the handling qualities. Pilot technique, in terms of learned control crossfeeds, can improve performance and lower workload for particular types of coupling. The results obtained in flight corroborated the simulation results.

Incorporating general race and housing flexibility and deadband in rolling element bearing analysis

Methods for including the effects of general race and housing compliance and outer race-to-housing deadband (clearance) in rolling element bearing mechanics analysis is presented. It is shown that these effects can cause significant changes in bearing stiffness characteristics, which are of major importance in rotordynamic response of turbomachinery and other rotating systems. Preloading analysis is demonstrated with the finite element/contact mechanics hybrid method applied to a 45 mm angular contact ball bearing.

Design considerations of manipulator and feel system characteristics in roll tracking

A fixed-base simulation was performed to identify and quantify interactions between the pilot's hand/arm neuromuscular subsystem and such control system features of typical modern fighter aircraft roll rate command mechanizations as: (1) force versus displacement sensing side-stick type manipulator, (2) feel force/displacement gradient, (3) feel system versus command prefilter dynamic lag, and (4) flight control system effective time delay. The experiment encompassed some 48 manipulator/filter/aircraft configurations. Displacement side-stick experiment results are given and compared with the previous force sidestick experiment results. Attention is focused on control bandwidth, excitement (peaking) of the neuromuscular mode, feel force/displacement gradient effects, time delay effects, etc. Section 5 is devoted to experiments with a center-stick in which force versus displacement sensing, feel system lag, and command prefilter lag influences on tracking performance and pilot preference are investigated.

Vibration transmission through rolling element bearings. I - Bearing stiffness formulation. II - System studies

How vibratory motion can be transmitted from the rotating shaft to the casing and other connecting structures in rotating mechanical equipment is addressed here by developing a new mathematical model of precision rolling element bearings. A new grating stiffness matrix is proposed in order to demonstrate a coupling between the shaft bending motion and the flexural motion of the casing plate. It is shown that the translational bearing stiffness coefficients currently used in rotor dynamic models are a small subset of the proposed matrix. The theory is validated by examples, and the proposed bearing formulation is then extended to demonstrate its superiority over existing models in vibration transmission analyses. It is shown that the model can easily be incorporated into analytical or numerical models typically used for dynamic analyses.

The effect of windshear during takeoff roll on aircraft stopping distance

A simulation of a Boeing 727 aircraft during acceleration on the runway is used to determine the effect of windshear on stopping distance. Windshears of various magnitudes, durations, and onset times are simulated to assess the aircraft performance during an aborted takeoff on five different runway surfaces. A windshear detection system, active during the takeoff roll and similar to the Honeywell Windshear Detection System is simulated to provide a discrete system to activate aircraft braking upon shear detection. The results of the simulation indicate that several factors effect the distance required to stop the aircraft. Notable among these are gross weight, takeoff flap position, runway characteristics, and pilot reaction time. Of the windshear parameters of duration, onset and magnitude, magnitude appears to have the most significant effect.

Analysis of rolling contact spall life in 440 C steel bearing rims

The results of a two year study of the mechanisms of spall failure in the HPOTP bearings are described. The objective was to build a foundation for detailed analyses of the contact life in terms of: cyclic plasticity, contact mechanics, spall nucleation, and spall growth. Since the laboratory rolling contact testing is carried out in the 3 ball/rod contact fatigue testing machine, the analysis of the contacts and contact lives produced in this machine received attention. The results from the experimentally observed growth lives are compared with calculated predictions derived from the fracture mechanics calculations.

Modeling of rolling element bearing mechanics

Roller element bearings provide the primary mechanical interface between rotating and nonrotating components in the high performance turbomachinery of the Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME). Knowledge of bearing behavior under various loading and environmental conditions is essential to predicting and understanding the overall behavior of turbopumps, including rotordynamic stability, critical speeds and bearing life. The objective is to develop mathematical models and computer programs to describe the mechanical behavior of ball and cylinder roller bearings under the loading and environmental conditions encountered in the SSME and future high performance rocket engines. This includes characteristics such as nonlinear load/motion relationships, stiffness and damping, rolling element loads for life prediction, and roller and cage stability.

Analysis of blended rolled edge reflectors using numerical UTD

The uniform geometrical theory of diffraction (UTD) concept is used to predict the scattered fields in the target zones of compact-range blended rolled-edge reflectors. Since the necessary diffraction coefficients are not known in a closed form, a numerical method to calculate the diffraction coefficients is described. In the numerical method, the problem is reduced to two dimensions, and physical optics line integration is used to compute the diffraction coefficients. Thus, the method is computationally efficient. The method is used to analyze two compact-range reflectors. The results obtained using the numerical UTD show good agreement with the scattered fields obtained using a corrected physical optics surface integration.

Elasto-plastic coupled temperature-displacement finite element analysis of two-dimensional rolling-sliding contact with a translating heat source

The present paper describes a transient translating elastoplastic thermomechanical finite element model to study two-dimensional frictional rolling contact. Frictional two-dimensional contact is simulated by repeatedly translating a nonuniform thermomechanical distribution across the surface of an elastoplastic half space. The half space is represented by a two-dimensional finite element mesh with appropriate boundaries. Calculations are for an elastic-perfectly plastic material and the selected thermophysical properties are assumed to be temperature independent. The paper presents temperature variations, stress and plastic strain distributions and deformations. Residual tensile stresses are observed. The magnitude and depth of these stresses depends on (1) the temperature gradients and (2) the magnitudes of the normal and tangential tractions.

Force and moment transmissibilities through rolling element bearings in a single-stage rotor system

A lumped parameter model of a single-stage rotor system is developed which includes a new mathematical model for precision rolling element bearings to clarify this issue quantitatively and qualitatively. A comprehensive bearing stiffness matrix of dimension six is proposed which clearly demonstrates the coupling between the rotating shaft and casing motion. An eigensolution and the forced harmonic solution are obtained numerically. The natural frequencies predicted are found to be in excellent agreement with a finite element model.
