Properties of optical radiation of variables and quasars

Photoelectric observations in the system UBV are considered for 42 variable stars, six quasars and Sco XR-1 with U-B and B-V colors of different type radiations. There are regressive dependences for nearly all the objects. On the Delta V/Delta B, Delta U/Delta B plane the objects were divided according to the types and situated along the bands. The directions of these bands are in agreement with values of A for different types of radiation.

Simplified photoionization analysis of quasar emission spectra.

Simplified photoionization calculations, considering quasar emission lines with ultraviolet rest-wavelengths, can be made including only hydrogen, helium, and carbon ions. With plausible assumptions about the helium abundance and ionizing spectral slope, estimates of the (radiation/gas) pressure ratio and carbon abundance are possible. Proportionality relations, showing the dependences of line ratios upon assumed parameters, may be useful in considering differences between individual spectra.

Absorption lines in the spectrum of the quasar Markarian 132.

Wavelengths and profiles of several absorption lines in the spectrum of the quasar Markarian 132, obtained with the aid of an integrating television sensor, are presented. An attempt is made to derive column densities and internal Doppler velocities by fitting theoretical Voigt profiles to the observed spectra. C IV lines show that the absorption must occur in at least two separate clouds with a relative velocity of 160 km/sec.

Quasars, pulsars, black holes and HEAO's

Astronomical surveys are discussed by large X-ray, gamma ray, and cosmic ray instruments carried onboard high-energy astronomy observatories. Quasars, pulsars, black holes, and the ultimate benefits of the new astronomy are briefly discussed.

Dielectronic recombination and abundances near quasars

Major obstacles to determining certain elemental abundances associated with some quasars are (1) a lack of accurately measured helium line intensities, and (2) uncertainty about the extent to which dielectronic recombination, i.e. C(+3) + e(-) yields C(+2), is suppressed at the relevant gas and radiation densities. Some calculated results are presented in an attempt to reduce the latter obstacle.
