On the possible detection of an energetic photon pulse from the recent supernova in NGC 5253

A diffuse atmospheric fluorescence pulse having the proper signatures of an excitation caused by a fast burst of X-ray photons incident from the general direction of the recent supernova in NGC 5253, was recorded on May 3, 1972, at 20 hr 48 min 51 sec UT. Due to excessive background pulses of terrestrial origin, it is concluded that the evidence should at best be regarded as suggestive. It is recommended that the data of satellite-borne X-ray detectors be examined for anomalies at the indicated time.

Applications of the direct photon absorption technique for measuring bone mineral content in vivo. Determination of body composition in vivo

The bone mineral content, BMC, determined by monoenergetic photon absorption technique, of 29 different locations on the long bones and vertebral columns of 24 skeletons was measured. Compressive tests were made on bone from these locations in which the maximum load and maximum stress were measured. Also the ultimate strain, modulus of elasticity and energy absorbed to failure were determined for compact bone from the femoral diaphysis and cancellous bone from the eighth through eleventh thoracic vertebrae. Correlations and predictive relationships between these parameters were examined to investigate the applicability of using the BMC at sites normally measured in vivo, i.e. radius and ulna in estimating the BMC and/or strength of the spine or femoral neck. It was found that the BMC at sites on the same bone were highly correlated r = 0.95 or better; the BMC at sites on different bones were also highly interrelated, r = 0.85. The BMC at various sites on the long bones could be estimated to between 10 and 15 per cent from the BMC of sites on the radius or ulna.

Evaluation of the effects of hypergravity exposure and caging restraint on bone mineralization in the Beagle by in vivo photon absorptiometry

Photon absorptiometry was used to evaluate bone mineral kinetics associated with normal development and the possible perturbations to bone development resulting from hypergravity exposure over a period of six months in developing Beagles. A series of seven measurements were performed at specific times with the first measurement prior to treatment and subsequent measurements at 2, 5, 9, 14, 20 and 26 weeks from the onset of the experiment. Four groups of six male Beagle pups, ranging in age from 85 to 92 days were studied. Two groups were chronically exposed to hypergravity treatments by centrifugation of 2.0 G (18.0 RPM, 11.7 ft radius) and 2.6 G (18.0 RPM, 19.8 ft radius) for the 26 week period. A third group of six dogs served as a caged control to evaluate possible changes due to confinement in small plexiglass cages similar to those of the centrifuge. Thus this control group was subjected to limited exercise due to caging restraint. The fourth group of animals was housed in open runs to allow exercise without the spatial confinement of the smaller plexiglass cages. Results show highly significant differences in body weight, bone length, increase in bone density of control group relative to other groups, and a decrease in bone mineral content in the two gravity treated groups.

Two-dimensional photon-counting detector arrays based on microchannel array plates

The production of simple and rugged photon-counting detector arrays has been made possible by recent improvements in the performance of the microchannel array plate (MCP) and by the parallel development of compatible electronic readout systems. The construction of proximity-focused MCP arrays of novel design in which photometric information from (n x m) picture elements is read out with a total of (n + m) amplifier and discriminator circuits is described. Results obtained with a breadboard (32 x 32)-element array employing 64 charge-sensitive amplifiers are presented, and the application of systems of this type in spectrometers and cameras for use with ground-based telescopes and on orbiting spacecraft discussed.

Direct observation of the optical plasma resonance of Ag by photon-assisted tunneling

Photon-assisted tunneling is proposed for the investigation of optical plasma resonances; this is demonstrated by the direct observation of the Ag resonance in appropriate Ag-Al2O3-Al structures. A spectral scan of the ratio of the signals photoinduced by the p and s polarizations shows a large enhancement corresponding to the plasma resonance of Ag.

A photon counting array photometer using an intensified charge coupled device

An array photometer which uses an intensified charge coupled device was developed. This system, the University of Maryland Array Photometer (UMAP), has the ability to discriminate single photoelectron events in real time at a 4 Megahertz rate. The photosensor uses an S-20 photocathode and a Fairchild CCD202 with a 100 by 100 array of separate individual channels. The overall system has demonstrated a noise level which permits single photoelectron discrimination, a scan rate of 400 frames per second, a very linear response, and very low lag. The UMAP system has a very large dynamic range exceeding 10,000 in the photon counting mode. A special technique to extend the dynamic range to 1,000,000 was described. The performance parameters of this system, both in the laboratory and on the telescope were cited. Data from these observations were discussed to illustrate the system sensitivity, which is basically limited by the pixel size in the array, rather than the electrooptics.

Two photon excitation of atomic oxygen

A standard perturbation expansion in the atom-radiation field interaction is used to calculate the two photon excitation cross section for 1s(2) 2s(2) 2p(4) p3 to 1s(2) 2s(2) 2p(3) (s4) 3p p3 transition in atomic oxygen. The summation over bound and continuum intermediate states is handled by solving the equivalent inhomogeneous differential equation. Exact summation results differ by a factor of 2 from a rough estimate obtained by limiting the intermediate state summation to one bound state. Higher order electron correlation effects are also examined.

Development and test of photon-counting microchannel plate detector arrays for use on space telescopes

The full sensitivity, dynamic range, and photometric stability of microchannel array plates(MCP) are incorporated into a photon-counting detection system for space operations. Components of the system include feedback-free MCP's for high gain and saturated output pulse-height distribution with a stable response; multi-anode readout arrays mounted in proximity focus with the output face of the MCP; and multi-layer ceramic headers to provide electrical interface between the anode array in a sealed detector tube and the associated electronics.

CO/d-3 Delta sub i to X-1 Sigma +/ fluorescence from photodissociation of CO2 by 923 A photons

Measurements of vacuum ultraviolet fluorescence from the photodissociation of CO2 by photons from a N IV line emission source at a wavelength of 923 A have revealed a second CO band system in addition to the expected emission bands. Spectra with time resolution were obtained and the fluorescence lifetime and the dependence of fluorescence intensity on CO2 pressure were measured. An analysis of this data has permitted the second band system to be identified as originating from CO(d-3 Delta sub i to X-1 Sigma +) transitions.

Near-uv photon efficiency in a TiO2 electrode - Application to hydrogen production from solar energy

An n-type (001) TiO2 electrode irradiated at 365 nm was tested under anodic polarization. A saturation current independent of pH and proportional to light intensity has been observed. Accurate measurements of the incident power lead to a 60 per cent photon efficiency. A photoelectrochemical cell built with such an electrode, operated under solar irradiation without concentration, produced an electrolysis current of 0.7 mA/sq cm without applied voltage.

A photon counting array photometer

The operation and performance of an array photometer with the ability to discriminate on single photoelectrons are discussed. The system consists of a 100 by 100 array of channels which count single photoelectrons. The photosensor is an Intensified Charge Coupled Device using a Fairchild CCD201 which was fabricated by the Electronic Vision Company. This system has demonstrated a noise level which permits single photoelectron discrimination, high scan rate (400 frames/sec), and low lag. The UMAP system has been successfully operated in the photon counting mode on a 36-inch telescope and on a 48-inch telescope. Data from these observations illustrate the system sensitivity and the spacial resolution which is better defined by the size of an individual pixel element on the CCD.

A photon-counting multichannel spectrometer

A multichannel detector system is described in which the positions of individual photon events in a high-gain image intensifier are decoded in the output of a video detector. The high-gain intensifier consists of a pair of three-stage electrostatic image-tube assemblies each containing three fiber-optically-coupled tubes potted in a rugged package with an internal high-voltage supply. Operation of the electrooptical system is discussed along with the pulse-detection process and the operation of the spectrograph in which the image-tube assembly is mounted. It is noted that the spectrometer detects 1.0 count/sec per A for an object of magnitude 13.0 at the peak of its response in the visual band when no light is lost on the slit, that a 10% coincidence correction is reached at an overall count rate of 860 per sec, and that the response follows an exponential law up to count rates of about 4000 per sec. The measured spectrum of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 5548 is provided as an example of the raw data produced by the instrument on a 1.5 meter telescope.

Two- and three-photon ionization of hydrogen and lithium

We present the detailed result of a calculation on two- and three-photon ionization of hydrogen and lithium based on a recently proposed calculational method. Our calculation has demonstrated that this method is capable of retaining the numerical advantages enjoyed by most of the existing calculational methods and, at the same time, circumventing their limitations. In particular, we have concentrated our discussion on the relative contribution from the resonant and nonresonant intermediate states.

Lunar laser ranging data deposited in the National Space Science Data Center normal points, filtered observations, and unfiltered photon detections

The lunar laser ranging project at McDonald Observatory provides the unique opportunity to acquire successfully precise range data for the earth-moon system. From the experiment's inception, the obligation was recognized to make these data available to the general scientific community in a reasonably useable form and in a realistic time frame. The documentation to be used in conjunction with the 1979 April deposit into the National Space Science Data Center which contains normal points, filtered observations and unfiltered photon stops for the months July through December, 1978 are reported.
