We report 26 subsurface sediment and 9 groundwater metagenomes from the Oak Ridge Reservation at Oak Ridge, TN, USA. Samples were collected from various depths and phases (attached vs planktonic) to study subsurface microbial metabolism, the effect of contamination on microbial communities, and differences across groundwater and sediment microbial communities.

A large accidental 14CO2 release at the Oak Ridge Reservation in Tennessee, USA provided a strong label pulse into adjacent, well-studied oak forests, resulting in highly elevated Δ14C values in leaf litter (~1000‰) and roots (~260–450‰). A four-year manipulative study was conducted to provide insight into mechanisms underlying soil Organic matter dynamics, specifically to determine the relative contribution of litter versus roots to the bulk mineral soil C pool, as well as to free light, occluded light and heavy fractions. The heavy fraction was further split into fractions with densities of 1.7–2.4 g cm-3 and >2.4 g cm-3 to test the homogeneity of the mineral-associated fraction of C. Substantial concentrations of label were detected in all soil fractions within a year of the 14CO2 release, indicating rapid incorporation of newly fixed photosynthates in all fractions of soil organic C, regardless of differences in stability inferred by previous work. This rapid incorporation of label occurred only in treatments where roots were labeled, indicating that roots are the major source of inputs to mineral soil C stocks at these sites. Separation of the heavy fraction into subfractions of intermediate (1.7–2.4 g cm -3) and high (>2.4 g cm-3) density indicated that both subfractions incorporated label at similar rates, despite significant differences in degree of microbial processing.
Cliff failure is occurring and threatens to expose pits and shafts. Steep slope angles = FoS < 1 = high probability of failure and retreat. EQ magnitude > 5.5 could initiate failure where FoS > 1. Fracture characterization (location, orientation, etc.) is essential for predictive analysis of at-risk cliff failure locations. Additional surface exposure dating would be helpful and further constrain the effect of fracture characteristics. Continued monitoring is essential for change detection and identification of areas with higher cliff retreat rates.
In general, Monte Carlo methods simulate large numbers of random trials in order to observe numerical behavior of systems described by probabilistic behavior. In radiation transport, pseudo-random number generators are used to randomly sample individual particle lives.

Development and implementation of the Institutional Control Evaluation Project will include: Evaluate institutional surface water controls and infrastructure installed by LANL. Implement pilot project in the Los Alamos Canyon Watershed Spring, 2020. Initial evaluations will include canyon bottom controls with plan to expand program as funding allows. This will be a building block for successful Long-Term Monitoring and Stewardship (LTM&S) Program.
Neutron scattering facilities like those available at ORNL are enabling the discovery and development of advanced materials include those to be used for next generation energy storage systems. In spite of all the success that neutron imaging has enjoyed in recent years, even higher-impact research is limited by the current temporal and spatial resolution of neutron detection devices. In particular, the spatial resolution of all neutron imaging methods in use and under development is fundamentally limited by the variance introduced by the charged particles emitted from neutron absorption. Thus, we are investigating, designing and demonstrating an array of ~1 micron-sized glass scintillating fibers arranged via photonics-crystal-fiber patterning techniques-- with particle tracking (a must) so that position resolution can be finer than than that allowed by the charged particle ranges. The processes, knowledge and algorithms developed will allow for spatially (1 micron) and time resolved (<100 ns), high throughput neutron transmission imaging in large areas at reasonable costs.
The purpose of this siting evaluation is to identify a list of candidate site locations or areas within INL boundaries for onsite demonstration of advanced reactors. A comparison of suitable advanced reactor sites is provided and includes evaluation of existing buildings, previously developed sites, and undeveloped sites across the INL Site.
The Recorded Information Management (RIM) training and guidance materials were originally evaluated to determine the current status of the training program. Specifically, how and where are training materials implemented and are members of the workforce (MOWs) regularly accessing them. The evaluation highlighted that there is a breadth of training materials and guidance available; however, the materials are often outdated, point to old Sandia Policies, and/or are in outdated templates. Additionally, there is currently no single-entry point for training, meaning that training is available via the RIM homepage, TEDs, etc. This means that MOWs must search in various webpages or systems for training. To ensure RIM training materials are regularly updated and are accessible for MOWs it is recommended to assign one staff member to manage the program training materials.
Purpose: Provide data from a water run of the LLNL tissue digestor to confirm operational status for possible extension of Medical Waste permit, since the annual recertification maintenance and testing could not take place due to the shelter-in-place of the tissue digester vendor who is located outside of California. This is a unique medical waste device and the vendor who certifies our other medical waste equipment (permitted autoclaves), does not service the tissue digester.
This work presents the results obtained from several projects related to the study of the High Burnup Structure in Light Water Reactors.
Agenda for this presentation includes campus master planning and recap project prioritization (functionality).
