An ultralong CDRH2 in HCV neutralizing antibody demonstrates structural plasticity of antibodies against E2 glycoprotein

A vaccine protective against diverse HCV variants is needed to control the HCV epidemic. Structures of E2 complexes with front layer-specific broadly neutralizing antibodies (bNAbs) isolated from HCV-infected individuals, revealed a disulfide bond-containing CDRH3 that adopts straight (individuals who clear infection) or bent (individuals with chronic infection) conformation. To investigate whether a straight versus bent disulfide bond-containing CDRH3 is specific to particular HCV-infected individuals, we solved a crystal structure of the HCV E2 ectodomain in complex with AR3X, a bNAb with an unusually long CDRH2 that was isolated from the chronically-infected individual from whom the bent CDRH3 bNAbs were derived. The structure revealed that AR3X utilizes both its ultralong CDRH2 and a disulfide motif-containing straight CDRH3 to recognize the E2 front layer. These results demonstrate that both the straight and bent CDRH3 classes of HCV bNAb can be elicited in a single individual, revealing a structural plasticity of VH1-69-derived bNAbs.

Deep electric field predictions by drift-reduced Braginskii theory with plasma-neutral interactions based upon experimental images of boundary turbulence

We present 2-dimensional turbulent electric field calculations via physics-informed deep learning consistent with (i) drift-reduced Braginskii theory under the framework of an axisymmetric fusion plasma with purely toroidal field and (ii) experimental estimates of the fluctuating electron density and temperature obtained from analysis of gas puff imaging of a discharge on the Alcator C-Mod tokamak. The inclusion of effects from the locally puffed atomic helium on particle and energy sources within the reduced plasma turbulence model are found to strengthen correlations between the electric field and electron pressure. The neutrals are also directly associated with an observed broadening in the distribution of turbulent field amplitudes and increased E×B shearing rates.

Comparing event generator predictions and ab-initio calculations of $\nu$-$^{12}$C neutral current quasi-elastic scattering at 1 GeV

The measurement of neutrino oscillations and exotic physics searches are important parts of the physics program in the near future, with new state-of-the-art experiments planned within the next decade. Future and modern experiments in these fields will make use of nuclear targets. Event Generators (EGs) are software used in the analysis of neutrino oscillation experiments. EGs use to predict kinematic observables for a range of neutrino energies. These simulations may lack physics captured by more rigorous theoretical calculations. This work compares EG performance to nuclear theory calculations by comparing observables generated in the two frameworks. We provide a common set of definitions between theory and experiment and assess the physics contained in EG simulations. Neutral current quasi-elastic (NCQE) scattering events for neutrinos and anti-neutrinos on a $^{12}$C target are simulated with a specific EG, NEUT, used by the T2K experiment for its analysis. The simulated cross sections are compared to analytic calculations from nuclear theory within the factorization scheme. We compare the NEUT implementation of two different models on nuclear spectral functions: the Relativistic Fermi Gas (RFG) and the correlated basis spectral function (CBF) to analytic calculations of the same models in the factorization scheme. For both nuclear physics models, we compare the appearance of features in the distributions relevant to experimental analyses. Qualitatively, the shape of the simulated distribution is similar to the one obtained through theory calculations; however, there are some discrepancies between the theory calculations and the NEUT simulation. While the EG simulations and analytic calculations with the same model of nuclear dynamics show similar overall features, there are still differences between the two.

Cyber-attack detection, localization, and neutralization for unmanned aerial vehicles

In some embodiments, an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (“UAV”) system may be associated with a plurality of monitoring nodes, each monitoring node generating a series of monitoring node values over time that represent operation of the UAV system. An attack detection computer platform may receive the series of current monitoring node values and generate a set of current feature vectors. The attack detection computer platform may access an attack detection model having at least one decision boundary (e.g., created using a set of normal feature vectors a set of attacked feature vectors). The attack detection model may then be executed and the platform may transmit an attack alert signal based on the set of current feature vectors and the at least one decision boundary. According to some embodiments, attack localization and/or neutralization functions may also be provided.

Search for Higgs Portal Scalars and Heavy Neutral Leptons Decaying in the MicroBooNE Detector

This thesis presents a search for Higgs Portal Scalars (HPS) and Heavy Neutral Leptons (HNL) decaying in the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC). The measurement was performed using data collected in-time with the Neutrino at the Main Injector (NuMI) beam with a total exposure corresponding to $7.01 \times 10^{20}$ protons on target. Mono-energetic HPS and HNL would be produced from kaons decaying at rest in the NuMI hadron absorber, before travelling ${\sim}100$~m to the MicroBooNE detector where they decay. A single selection and search strategy is used to target decays of HPS to $\mu\mu$ pairs and HNL to $\mu\pi$ pairs. The results are expressed as limits, at the $90\%$ confidence level, on the mixing angles that control the rates of production and decay for each new particle. For the HNL model, upper limits are set on the mixing parameter $\mumix$ in the range [$12.9 \times 10^{-8}$, $0.54 \times 10^{-8}$] for HNL with masses in the region $246$--$385$~MeV. % This represents an order of magnitude increase in sensitivity to the previous MicroBooNE HNL result. For the HPS model, limits on the scalar-Higgs mixing angle $\theta^2$ are set, excluding a region with a lower boundary between [$31.3 \times10^{-9}$, $1.09 \times 10^{-9}$] and an upper boundary between [$2.50 \times 10^{-5}$, $5.05 \times 10^{-9}$] for scalars with a mass of $212$--$275$ MeV. These results set the first constraints in this region of parameter space from a dedicated experimental search for HPS.

DarkNews: a Python-based event generator for heavy neutral lepton production in neutrino-nucleus scattering

We introduce DarkNews, a lightweight Python-based Monte-Carlo generator for beyond-the-Standard-Model neutrino-nucleus scattering. The generator handles the production and decay of heavy neutral leptons via additional vector or scalar mediators, as well as through transition magnetic moments. DarkNews samples pre-computed neutrino-nucleus upscattering cross sections and heavy neutrino decay rates to produce dilepton and single-photon events in accelerator neutrino experiments. We present two case studies with differential distributions for models that can explain the MiniBooNE excess. The aim of this code is to aid the neutrino theory and experimental communities in performing searches and sensitivity studies for new particles produced in neutrino upscattering.

Data assimilation for burnup distribution of PWR with three-dimensional variational algorithm and artificial neutral network

In this paper, a data-assimilation method has been proposed and applied for the burnup distribution of PWR. The burnup distribution is significant to the safety and economy of the reactor, as it is essential for the fuel-reloading design and optimization. Due to the burnup distribution cannot be measured directly during the reactor operation, the numerical simulation is widely applied to determine the burnup distribution. However, there is a deviation between the numerical simulation and the actual core due to some unavoidable factors, such as component manufacturing deviation, uneven flow distribution and so on. These differences would induce the errors to the simulation values of power distributions and hence to the burnup distribution. To address this problem, a data-assimilation method for the burnup distribution has been proposed with the application of power-distribution measurements. In our research, the three-dimensional variational (3DVAR) algorithm was applied for burnup-distribution calibration and the artificial neutral network (ANN) was applied to establish the relation between power distribution and corresponding burnup distribution. As engineering verification, the proposed data-assimilation method has been applied to the CNP1000 PWR operated in China. The numerical results indicated that the burnup-distribution errors can be reduced notably, as the maximum value of relative errors for power distribution can be reduced from 5.35% to 3.96%. Scalable algorithms for domain decomposition of Monte Carlo neutral particle transport simulations on unstructured mesh

Monte Carlo simulations are the gold standard in particle transport simulations, for shielding and nuclear reactor simulations Full core simulations can require terabytes of memory for tracking pin-resolved (up to 50k pins), nuclide (200 tracked), axial (20-200 zones) reaction rates Domain decomposition, splitting the calculation and the memory storage, among several nodes is challenging as it involves communication of particles across domain boundaries We created a new MOOSE application, MaCaw, to study this problem Algorithms developed for ray tracing in MOOSE were adapted for simulating neutral particle transport Physics and tally routines in OpenMC, dynamically linked, are called from the application

Intentional and Responsible Energy Transitions: Integrating Design Choices in the Pursuit of Carbon-Neutral Futures

The transitions of energy systems to carbon neutrality are among is one of the most ambitious, complex, uncertain, significant, and transformative projects in human history. They will therefore demand extraordinarily thoughtful, informed, and careful leadership. In recent years, this project has reached an important turning point, with widespread agreement to decarbonize energy systems by 2050. We argue that the next step is to engage leaders in doing the work necessary to achieve that goal. Specifically, we argue that regional leaders, across sectors, should build collaborative initiatives to intentionally and responsibly design and advance regional energy transitions. These transitions will entail navigating uncertain and unknown terrain, requiring diverse organizations and communities to work together to chart and construct potential pathways, assess their implications, and collectively work to make progress. To address these challenges, we recommend adopting region-first, anticipatory, justice-oriented approaches. In such approachesthis process, regions can collaboratively identify, deliberate, design, and navigate toward endpoints along complex and shifting pathways that recognize that design will matter. Efuture energy systems will deeply shape and be shaped by the futures of both societies and economies. Transitions will therefore need to be inclusive, to provide broad public input into both how to proceed with transitions and the goals that guide their design.

Measurement of the Deeply Virtual Neutral Pion Electroproduction Cross Section off the Proton at 10.6 GeV using the CLAS12 Detector

Deeply virtual exclusive reactions provide unique channels to study both transverse and longitudinal properties of the nucleon simultaneously, allowing for a 3D image of nucleon substructure. This presentation will discuss work towards extracting an absolute cross section for one such exclusive process, deeply virtual neutral pion production, using 10.6 GeV electron scattering data off a proton target from the CLAS12 experiment in Jefferson Lab Hall B. This measurement is important as exclusive meson production has unique access to the chiral odd Generalized Parton Distributions, and is also a background for other exclusive processes such as Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering, making the determination of this cross section crucial for other exclusive analyses.

Search for Heavy Neutral Leptons at the MINER$\nu$A detector

Heavy Neutral Leptons (HNL) are particles hypothesised to provide a mass generation mechanism for the active (observed) neutrino species, which are known to have nonzero mass from the definitive observation of neutrino oscillations. HNL are eigenstates of mass of the order $\mathcal{O}(0.1 − 1\,\,\mathrm{GeV}/c^{2})$, which mix into the active flavour eigenstates through the extended leptonic mixing matrix. Apart from neutrino mass, they could provide a natural dark matter candidate and a mechanism for matter-antimatter asymmetry in the early Universe, giving rise to today’s matter-dominated cosmos. Searches for HNL typically attempt to either confirm the existence of HNL through an excess in data that is most compatible with an HNL hypothesis, or by setting limits on the HNL parameter space $\left(M_{N4}, \left|U_{\alpha 4}\right|^{2}\right)$ in the case of statistically insignificant excess. Such searches are intensifying as part of a global research programme at both colliders and accelerator / atmospheric neutrino experiments. One such setting is the MINER$\nu$A experiment, located in the NuMI beamline at Fermilab. MINER$\nu$A has collected a large amount of data over seven years of operation to measure the cross-sections of neutrino-nucleus interactions necessary to drive systematic uncertainties down, in order for neutrino oscillation experiments to achieve sensitivity to CP violation in the neutrino sector. With the high-energy, high-intensity NuMI beam, and with good timing, position, and angular resolution leading to sensitivity to HNL decays, MINER$\nu$A is fertile ground for an HNL search, which is performed in this thesis. Specifically, a novel, experiment-agnostic and general simulation of HNL production and decay is presented and deployed; this simulation has been incorporated in the ubiquitous GENIE neutrino event generator for use with neutrino experiments in the future. The event selection and background characterisation is discussed in detail, including the primary background coming from charged-current coherent and diffractive pion production from neutrino-nucleus interactions, and constraints on the background using control regions from MINER$\nu$A data are derived. Finally, by means of a fake-data study given a background of $\mathcal{O}(500)$ events, the discovery potential and limit-setting capacity of MINER$\nu$A is demonstrated, and ways to improve this capacity are expounded upon.
