ECAR-5021 Source Term Estimates for SCO Micro-Reactor Designs

The purpose of this document is to provide source term estimates and the associated technical basis for Strategic Capabilities Office (SCO) microreactor designs that use TRISO fuel. This estimate can be used for relevant environmental and safety analyses that will be done as part of the project for all of the selected suppliers for a safety design strategy. This is a combined quantitative and qualitative analysis.

Fine Gradient Electrode and Micro Porous Layer Structures for Improved Heavy Duty Fuel Cells (Final Report)

The commercial deployment of Heavy Duty Fuel Cells(HDFC) for applications such as large trucks (for example, Class 8 capable of carrying 50,000 lb. loads) depends vitally on achieving high efficiency and durability at reasonable costs. Furthermore, the HDFC must operate under practical conditions such as with fuel and air impurities, multiple stop-start cycles, and under the extremes of climate our planet offers – from hot and cold to dry and wet. These conditions place a premium on the stability and utilization of the materials comprising the membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) powering the fuel cell. and the current catalysts, MicroPorous Layers, and Electrode structures and additives are insufficient for these needs. In Phase I Pajarito and Advent will develop durable electrocatalysts, MicroPorous Layer and electrode additives, and electrode structures for heavy duty fuel cells designed for zero-emission long-haul trucking. The electrocatalyst products are designed to solve the challenging durability and performance needs of fuel cells designed for long life and high efficiency through a combination of uniquely structured designed catalysts as well as new MicroPorous Layers (MPLs) and electrode structure additives. These improved materials will provide Pajarito both an expanded commercial opportunity in electrocatalysts, as well as new markets for MPL and electrode additives. The resulting public benefits include improved economics of fuel cells, a leading zero-emission technology for mobility, as well as reduced reliance on the critical minerals and metals used in the heavy-duty trucks industry. Possible follow-up Phase II and III projects would add full MEA products based on the Phase I efforts catalysts and additives, with full system validation by leading Fuel Cell Truck developers.

Micro-Liter Fuel Characterization and Property Prediction (Final Report)

The project “Microliter Fuel Characterization and Property Prediction” addresses DOE’s stated interest in enabling small volume (<20 μl), high throughput (>100 tests/device/month) measurements of transportation fuels and blends that are relevant to co-optimized fuels and engines. In this context, the ability to quantify the performance of a fuel in terms of autoignition metrics (e.g. octane number/sensitivity), combustion properties (e.g. flame speed) and physical properties (e.g. volatility and viscosity) is of significant interest. Predictions of fuel performance in a combustion engine require a link to be made between small volume measurements and combustion behavior of a fuel blend at engine relevant conditions.

Technology Enabling Zero-EPZ Micro Modular Reactors: Fabrication of Zirconium Hydride with Controlled Hydrogen Loading

This report completes Milestone M2.2.2 - ZrH pellet fabricated with controlled hydride loading: ZrH1.5±0.1 single phase pellets fabricated with controlled and thermally stable hydride loading. Hydrogen content to be quantified and single-phase confirmed by X-ray diffraction. In this milestone, we report the successful fabrication of delta-phase zirconium hydride pellets using the ORNL bulk metal hydriding system. The successful deployment of zirconium hydride moderator in advanced reactors requires development of a consistent and affordable production pathway along with implementation of a hydrogen retention solution throughout the reactor life. Fabrication of delta-phase zirconium hydride is challenging since the absorption of a large amount of hydrogen into alpha-zirconium induces significant volume expansion and the present hydrogen concentration gradient results in cracking. A fully programmable hydriding system with continuous hydrogen partial pressure and flow control to facilitate processing of massive metal hydride has been developed at ORNL. In this report, the working principle of the hydriding system will be introduced. Characterization of the produced zirconium hydride includes X-ray powder diffraction to identify the present phases and X-ray Computed Tomography to visualize the internal microstructure (including cracks). The results indicate that single delta-phase zirconium hydride pellets with various sizes have been successfully produced.

Material Characterization of Grade 91 Steel Welds using, Micro-resolution Ultrasonic Imaging System

Grade 91 (9Cr-1Mo-V) steel is a common structural material for fossil-fuel fired and nuclear power plants because of its creep strength and oxidation resistance at high temperatures. In this research, we studied the feasibility of correlating the high-resolution images obtained from the immersion ultrasonic imaging technique to microstructure regions in Grade 91 steel plate weldments. The high-resolution ultrasonic images presented in this paper were generated using a 20-MHz focused transducer as the transmitter, and a laser vibrometer as the receiver in the through transmission configuration to produce longitudinal and shear waves. This nondestructive evaluation (NDE) method was used to identify the Fusion Zone (FZ), Heat-Affected Zone (HAZ), and Base Metal (BM) regions of Grade 91 cold metal transfer (CMT) and flux core arc welds (FCAW). The ultrasonic imaging results were analyzed using beam propagation amplitudes and homogeneity, which in turn were used to relate the different microstructure regions of the FCAW and CMT welded samples. With this study, we were able to identify highly susceptible microstructures in the weld that could potentially promote creep type failures.

Optimization and Commercialization of the Juvenile Eel/Lamprey Acoustic Transmitter and Micro-battery (Abstract)

Enhance studies to track in 3D and sub-meter accuracy the movements of sensitive species and early life stages of fish to advance understanding of migration timing and behaviors, habitat use, and survival rates, resulting in more informed management decisions regarding new and existing hydroelectric facilities and better designs of new hydropower systems that minimize or avoid environmental impacts.
