Matching Curved Lattices to Anisotropic Tangent Planes

Radial quantization would be the ideal formalism for studying strongly-coupled near-conformal quantum field theories but it requires the ability to perform lattice calculations on static, curved manifolds, specifically a very long cylinder whose cross section is a sphere. Smoothly discretizing the surface of a sphere requires a graph with unequal edge lengths. The geometry of such graphs is well understood since 1961 using Regge Calculus. But, lattice quantum field theories are defined in terms of couplings which appear in the action rather than edge lengths and so the relationship between couplings and lengths must be determined dynamically. A simple example is computing the ratio of spatial to temporal lattice spacings in anisotropic lattice QCD. I will discuss our conjecture that computing anisotropic lattice spacing ratios on affine transformations of regular flat lattices is sufficient to determine coupling assignments on curved lattices.

ML-based Data Assimilation and History Matching: Application to the IBDP CCS Project

It is crucial to monitor the CO2 plume effectively throughout the life cycle of a geologic CO2 sequestration project to ensure safety and storage efficiency. However, the computational cost of existing data assimilation methods can be prohibitively expensive due to the complex physics with multi-component non-isothermal simulation and high dimensionality of large-scale reservoir models. We address this challenge by proposing an accelerated deep learning-based workflow for model calibration and prediction of CO2 plume evolution in the reservoir. The power and efficacy of our workflow is demonstrated by application to the Illinois Basin-Decatur Project (IBDP), a large-scale CO2 storage test in saline aquifer. The data assimilation process is implemented rapidly by the proposed workflow with given field measurements including distributed pressure and temperature sensing (DTS) data at an injection and a monitoring well. CO2 plume evolution is predicted by running the simulations of the calibrated reservoir models.

Tough Errors Are no Match (TEAM): Optimizing the quantum compiler for noise resilience

This report summarizes Unitary Fund’s contributions to the Department of Energy’s TEAM project (DE-SC0020266) under Thrust 2: Quantum Programming and Compilation. The central outcomes of this work have been the development of Mitiq, an open-source Python toolkit for applying quantum error mitigation (QEM) techniques to noisy quantum programs, and the invention, benchmarking and theoretical investigation of novel QEM techniques. Additional outcomes include the development of other open source software packages for the usage, simulation and control of quantum computers.

Path Length Matching and Phase control for Coherently Combined Fiber Laser Arrays (1DPATH)

Coherently combined fiber lasers are literally the future of all lasers. Through coherent combining the high efficiency, ruggedness, and low cost of fiber lasers can be synthesized into any laser imaginable. Lasers of any wavelength, pulse characteristics, energy, average power, or beam output shape can be created through the coherent combination of a low cost base fiber laser. We now have the opportunity to move from traditional “Analog” lasers with their bulk optics, big optical benches, strict cleanliness requirements and high cost and fragility towards “Digital Lasers” where the output beams are shaped to provide characteristics like Orbital Angular Momentum to not only specify the traditional laser characteristics but also the output beam patterns as well. This will enable future applications such as Wakefield Accelerators, petawatt lasers, particle beam control, as well as Inertial Confinement Fusion Drivers and a host of other medical, scientific, and industrial uses.

Tough Errors are no Match (TEAM): Optimizing the Quantum Compiler for Noise Resilience

This project builds toward a comprehensive error-mitigating toolkit that makes quantum programming more robust and adaptive to the noisy, resource-limited nature of today’s quantum hardware. To that end, it integrates established error-mitigation methods — such as zero-noise extrapolation and dynamical decoupling — directly into compiler infrastructures. These techniques will be packaged as modules that can automatically adjust and combine based on performance analysis, enabling compilers to explore large design spaces and produce optimized, low-noise quantum programs with minimal manual intervention. In parallel, this project also explores new approaches to analog quantum programming or quantum simulation, and has developed the programming language SimuQ which treats quantum Hamiltonian evolution as the central object.

Producing cultivated meat cuts that match traditional meat in quality and affordability (CRADA Final Report)

Novel Farms, Inc., as a participant of the Cyclotron Road Lab-Embedded Entrepreneurship Program, investigated the performance of various animal cell lines and animal cell media formulations using its proprietary scaffolds as a growth substratum towards the development of economically-feasible cultivated meat production. As an alternative to conventionally farmed animal meat, cultivated meat production has the potential to yield a marginal carbon footprint while providing sustainable and cruelty-free animal protein. The prohibitively high cost of the growth factors necessary in animal cell culture media constitutes the primary barrier that hinders the economically viable production of cultivated meat products. Furthermore, scaffolding is required to create structured meat products, but current options are unsuitable for cost-effective large-scale production of cultivated meat. Novel Farms has developed a proprietary technology to produce scaffolding that has the potential to reduce production costs while providing an ideal 3D surface for cell growth. Developing cost-efficient methods for cultivated meat production will be vital in satisfying the growing demand for animal protein while avoiding the deforestation, carbon emissions, biodiversity loss and other negative outcomes of industrial animal farming.

Small-amplitude Compressible Magnetohydrodynamic Turbulence Modulated by Collisionless Damping in Earth’s Magnetosheath: Observation Matches Theory

Plasma turbulence is a ubiquitous dynamical process that transfers energy across many spatial and temporal scales and affects energetic particle transport. Recent advances in the understanding of compressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence demonstrate the important role of damping in shaping energy distributions on small scales, yet its observational evidence is still lacking. This study provides the first observational evidence of substantial collisionless damping (CD) modulation on the small-amplitude compressible MHD turbulence cascade in Earth’s magnetosheath using four Cluster spacecraft. Based on an improved compressible MHD decomposition algorithm, turbulence is decomposed into three eigenmodes: incompressible Alfvén modes and compressible slow and fast (magnetosonic) modes. Our observations demonstrate that CD enhances the anisotropy of compressible MHD modes because CD has a strong dependence on wave propagation angle. The wavenumber distributions of slow modes are mainly stretched perpendicular to the background magnetic field (B 0 ) and weakly modulated by CD. In contrast, fast modes are subjected to a more significant CD modulation. Fast modes exhibit a weak, scale-independent anisotropy above the CD truncation scale. Below the CD truncation scale, the anisotropy of fast modes enhances as wavenumbers increase. As a result, fast-mode fractions in the total energy of compressible modes decrease with the increase of perpendicular wavenumber (to B 0 ) or wave propagation angle. Our findings reveal how the turbulence cascade is shaped by CD and its consequences for anisotropies in the space environment.
