A preliminary exploration of using mixture density networks for data compression in Monte Carlo codes [Slides]
The thermal radiative transfer equations (TRT) model many important phenomena of interest at LANL. The TRT equations model time-dependent thermal radiation through a medium, i.e., how thermal radiation loses energy by absorption, gains energy via emission processes, and redistributes energy via scattering.
Optimal Chloride Salt Mixture for a Fusion Blanket
Deuterium-tritium fusion reactors cannot operate for a significant period without a closed tritium fuel cycle, according to a recent National Academies of Sciences (NAS) report on bringing fusion reactors to the US electrical grid. This fact places breeder blankets as one of the foundational systems for self-sustained fusion reactor operation. The typical functional requirements for a breeder blanket system include producing tritium, absorbing kinetic energy, transporting thermal energy, and being environmentally attractive. State-of-the-art research on liquid blankets has converged to primarily focus on (LiF) 2 and BeF 2 (FLiBe) molten salts and a metallic eutectic of lead and lithium (PbLi), but “virtually all of the technologies related to the tritium fuel cycle are at a low technological readiness level”. This work sought to explore optimum blanket configurations as it aligned with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) FY 2023 Laboratory Directed Research and Development Program’s research priority of developing and expanding the current understanding of fusion blanket science and technology. This purpose of this work was to address ORNL research priorities and NAS recommendations by investigating novel liquid blanket materials that could provide self-sustaining operation and draw on experience from research on molten salts used for advanced fission reactors, concentrated solar, and thermal energy storage. The hypothesis when proposing this research was that there could be chloride-based blanket designs that can exceed the tritium breeding ratios of (FLiBe) molten salt blankets while reducing the use of Be (FLiBe), avoiding the generation of HF (FLiBe), and minimizing magnetohydrodynamic (MHD)-perturbed flow fields (PbLi). The fastest and most cost-effective path to deploying liquid fusion breeder blankets could be from maximizing the synergistic technological overlap between fusion, fission, concentrated solar, and thermal energy storage industries.

Gasification of Coal/Plastic Mixtures: Fundamental Studies in a Laminar Entrained Flow Reactor
There is interest in leveraging entrained-flow coal gasification for co-processing plastic waste. However interactions between plastic and coal, particularly possible competition between coal volatiles and plastic vapors for oxygen, are not well understood. This study explores co-gasification of pulverized coal and plastic granules in a lab-scale entrained-flow reactor. Conversion and CO/CO2 ratio are given special attention.
Demonstrating the Feasibility of Biomass Pyrolysis Liquid, Coal, Plastic Oil Mixtures for Entrained Flow Gasification
There is interest in co-gasifying coal, biomass and plastic. An attractive alternative is to do that in a pressurized entrained-flow gasifier, technology that has been used for coal gasification for decades. The approach taken in this study is to liquefy biomass through fast pyrolysis and to liquefy waste plastic by thermal decomposition. The liquids form the basis of a slurry that also includes coal particles. In this work, several different compositions of coal-bioliquid-plastic oil slurries were prepared and evaluated for viscosity and settling properties. Suitable composition ranges were identified and are highlighted in the presentation.
Hydrochlorination of Uranium Dioxide in a Molten Salt Mixture- Phase 2: Sparged Benchtop Reaction Vessel Experiment
In 2023, Metatomic® Inc., a South Carolina based company, was awarded a Gateway for Advanced Innovation in Nuclear (GAIN) research voucher for a proposed series of experiments aimed at demonstrating the viability of a spent nuclear fuel (SNF) recycling process patented by Metatomic Inc. For the GAIN voucher, Metatomic Inc. selected Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) as a partner in executing the proposed proof-of-concept experiments. This report outlines the proof-of-concept experiments performed by SRNL for Metatomic Inc. during Phase 2 (of 2) experimentation. Though Phase 1 provided evidence of successful hydrochlorination, Phase 2 highlighted the nuances and challenges associated with scaling the reaction. The target UCl 4 species generated by the hydrochlorination of UO 2 generates water, which consumes UCl 4 . Compared to the single datapoint obtained at the end of the Phase 1 experiments, data collected at multiple timepoints during Phase 2 experiments indicated a presumed maximum percent conversion of 23% for this system that is likely influenced by water generation. Engineering improvements might be able to increase the percent conversion, but not likely to the degree needed for successful implementation of the technology. Moisture also presents an issue for the Hastelloy C276 reaction vessel. Eventually, corrosion will compromise the integrity of the reaction vessel, and the corrosion products could potentially affect the hydrochlorination chemistry. The presence of corrosion products, which were not produced in the Phase 1 alumina crucible, can and have created challenges when analyzing samples.

Determining the transient electric field and the effect of pulse repetition frequency on the field in a repetitive 10-ns pulsed discharge in a quiescent CH 4 -air mixture
The goal of this research is to understand the underlying physics enabled by nanosecond pulsed power in a discharge initiation and the following physicochemical processes that favor lean-fuel plasma ignition for combustion. The hypothesis of this project is that pulsed power waveforms such as the pulse repetition frequency (PRF), voltage amplitude, and dielectric surface alter the reduced electric field during the initiation of the discharge, resulting in different plasma properties, which will vary the physicochemical processes for efficient and selective radical productions. This is especially important for lean-burn combustion and reducing emission.
Humate Amendment Injection Viability Testing – Supplementary Batch Mixture and Soil Column Studies
Groundwater in the Lost Lake Aquifer Zone (LLAZ) in the Southern Sector of the M-Area Hazardous Waste management Facility (HWMF) is contaminated with chlorinated ethenes, including trichloroethylene (TCE) and tetrachloroethylene (PCE). Treatment of contaminated groundwater with humic acid is being evaluated as a potential corrective action for these volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the LLAZ in Southern Sector (SRNS, 2019). Pilot scale injections of Huma-K brand humic acid for groundwater treatment were previously performed in M-Area between 2017 and 2020 (Amidon, 2023). Groundwater was extracted from the Lost Lake Aquifer Zone (LLAZ), then a solution of humate was mixed with recovered groundwater and subsequently re-injected into the same aquifer unit. Operations of the historical humate pilot testing were discontinued in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions, low injection rates, and recirculation fluid spillage. No further field scale or laboratory research to investigate humate amended groundwater injection was performed at the SRS until 2024. At the request of Area Completion Projects (ACP), the Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) performed supplementary testing to help determine the viability of further injection of humate as a remedial option for VOCs within the LLAZ in the Southern Sector of the M-Area HWMF.
