Detection of abundant ethane and methane, along with carbon monoxide and water, in comet C/1996 B2 Hyakutake: evidence for interstellar origin

The saturated hydrocarbons ethane (C2H6) and methane (CH4) along with carbon monoxide (CO) and water (H2O) were detected in comet C/1996 B2 Hyakutake with the use of high-resolution infrared spectroscopy at the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility on Mauna Kea, Hawaii. The inferred production rates of molecular gases from the icy, cometary nucleus (in molecules per second) are 6.4 X 10(26) for C2H6, 1.2 X 10(27) for CH4, 9.8 X 10(27) for CO, and 1.7 X 10(29) for H2O. An abundance of C2H6 comparable to that of CH4 implies that ices in C/1996 B2 Hyakutake did not originate in a thermochemically equilibrated region of the solar nebula. The abundances are consistent with a kinetically controlled production process, but production of C2H6 by gas-phase ion molecule reactions in the natal cloud core is energetically forbidden. The high C2H6/CH4 ratio is consistent with production of C2H6 in icy grain mantles in the natal cloud, either by photolysis of CH4-rich ice or by hydrogen-addition reactions to acetylene condensed from the gas phase.

Compact Micromachined Bandpass Filters for Infrared Planetary Spectroscopy

The thermal instrument strawman payload of the Jupiter Europa Orbiter on the Europa Jupiter Science Mission will map out thermal anomalies, the structure, and atmospheric conditions of Europa and Jupiter within the 7-100 micron spectral range. One key requirement for the payload is that the mass cannot exceed 3.7 kg. Consequently, a new generation of light-weight miniaturized spectrometers needs to be developed. On the path toward developing these spectrometers is development of ancillary miniaturized spectroscopic components. In this paper, we present a strategy for making radiation hard and low mass FIR band pass metal mesh filters. Our strategy involves using MEMS-based fabrication techniques, which will permit the quasi-optical filter structures to be made with micron-scale precision. This will enable us to achieve tight control over both the pass band of the filter and the micromachined silicon support structure architecture, which will facilitate integration of the filters for a variety of applications.

Volatile Composition and Outgassing in C/2018 Y1 (Iwamoto): Extending Limits for High-Resolution Infrared Cometary Spectroscopy between 2.8 and 5.0 µm

We used the powerful high spectral resolution cross-dispersed facility spectrograph, iSHELL, at the NASAInfrared Telescope Facility(IRTF)to observe C/2018 Y1(Iwamoto), a long-period comet from the Oort cloud. We report production rates for water and eight other parent molecules(native ices),C2H6, CO, CH4,H2CO,CH3OH, HCN, NH3, and C2H2, on three preperihelion UT dates, 2019 January 13 and(near perihelion)February4–5. We present abundance ratios relative to both C2H6(a nonpolar molecule)and H2O(a polar molecule), thereby providing a more complete picture of the parent volatile composition of C/2018 Y1 and potential associations of ices in its nucleus. Overall, the measured spatial distributions for polar molecules(in particular, H2O and CH3OH)were broader, exhibiting more complex structure compared with nonpolar or weakly polar species(CH4,C2H6, andCO). Our January 13 results permitted quantitatively assessing the significant improvement in sensitivity delivered by iSHELL compared with previous capabilities at the IRTF. The efficient spectral coverage of iSHELL plus the favorable geocentric Doppler shift of C/2018 Y1 allowed for measuring>50% of CH4ν3-band emission intensity on both January 13 and February 5. Compositionally, compared to their respective mean abundances among comets from the Oort cloud, C2H6and CH3OH were enriched, CH4and HCN were near normal, and all other species were depleted. The abundance ratio CH3OH/C2H6was higher by 45%±8% on January 13 versusFebruary 5, whereas CH4/C2H6was unchanged within the uncertainty, suggesting nonhomogeneous composition among regions of the nucleus dominating activity on these dates

Physical Characterization of Warm Spitzer-observed Near-Earth Objects

Near-infrared spectroscopy of Near-Earth Objects (NEOs) connects diagnostic spectral features to specific surface mineralogies. The combination of spectroscopy with albedos and diameters derived from thermal infrared observations can increase the scientific return beyond that of the individual datasets. For instance, some taxonomic classes can be separated into distinct compositional groupings with albedo and different mineralogies with similar albedos can be distinguished with spectroscopy. To that end, we have completed a spectroscopic observing campaign to complement the ExploreNEOs Warm Spitzer program that obtained albedos and diameters of nearly 600 NEOs (Trilling et al., 2010). The spectroscopy campaign included visible and near-infrared observations of ExploreNEOs targets from various observatories. Here we present the results of observations using the low-resolution prism mode (approx. 0.7-2.5 microns) of the SpeX instrument on the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF). We also include near-infrared observations of Explore-NEOs targets from the MIT-UH-IRTF Joint Campaign for Spectral Reconnaissance. Our dataset includes near-infrared spectra of 187 ExploreNEOs targets (125 observations of 92 objects from our survey and 213 observations of 154 objects from the MIT survey). We identify a taxonomic class for each spectrum and use band parameter analysis to investigate the mineralogies for the S-, Q-, and V-complex objects. Our analysis suggests that for spectra that contain near-infrared data but lack the visible wavelength region, the Bus-DeMeo system misidentifies some S-types as Q-types. We find no correlation between spectral band parameters and ExploreNEOs albedos and diameters. We investigate the correlations of phase angle with band area ratio and near-infrared spectral slope. We find slightly negative Band Area Ratio (BAR) correlations with phase angle for Eros and Ivar, but a positive BAR correlation with phase angle for Ganymed. The results of our phase angle study are consistent with those of (Sanchez et al., 2012). We find evidence for spectral phase reddening for Eros, Ganymed, and Ivar. We identify the likely ordinary chondrite type analog for an appropriate subset of our sample. Our resulting proportions of H, L, and LL ordinary chondrites differ from those calculated for meteorite falls and in previous studies of ordinary chondrite-like NEOs.

3 micron spectroscopy of comet Halley (1982i)

Near-infrared spectroscopy and photometry was obtained of comet Halley in December 1985 when its heliocentric distance was 1.19 AU. No water ice absorption or molecular band emission were observed. The interstellar 3.3-micron emission band was also not observed. The 3-micron spectrum of comet Halley consisted of scattered sunlight at wavelengths less than 3.1 microns and of thermal emission by dust at longer wavelengths.
