Nuclear star formation on 100 parsec scales: 10" resolution radio continuum, HI and CO observations

A program of radio line and continuum studies of star formation in nearby spiral galaxies is reported. The objective is a search for hot gas and peculiar dynamics in spiral nuclei with 10" to 30" angular resolution. Vigorous star formation is found to be a common phenomenon in the inner kpc of spirals. Arcsecond resolution observations of radio continuum emission at 6 and 2 cm were used to separate the thermal and nonthermal radio components. It was found that thermal and nonthermal emission are well mixed even on sizescales of 10 pc. To understand the reason for the increased level of star formation activity in spiral nuclei, HI and CO emission in these galaxies is studied. The CO transition was detected in M51, M82, NGC 253, NGC 6946 and IC 342 with T sub a approx. 0.5 to 2.0 K, at 20" angular resolution. The dynamics and spatial distribution of nuclear gas are being studied using VLA HI maps with 30" synthesized beams. Evidence for noncircular motions in HI was found in the nucleus of IC 342.

Electrochemical impregnation of nickel hydroxide in porous electrodes

The electrochemical impregnation of nickel hydroxide in porous electrode was investigated both experimentally and theoretically. The loading level and plaque expansion were the most important parameters to be considered. The effects of applied current density, stirring, ratio of solution to electrode volume and pH were identified. A novel flow through electrochemical impregnation is proposed in which the electrolyte is forced through the porous nickel plaque. The thickening of the plaque can be reduced while maintaining high loading capacity. A mathematical model is presented which describes the transport of the nitrate, nickel and hydroxyl ions and the consecutive heterogeneous electrochemical reduction of nitrate and the homogeneous precipitation reaction of nickel hydroxide. The distributions of precipitation rate and active material within the porous electrode are obtained. A semiempirical model is also proposed which takes into account the plugging of the pores.

Finite analytic numerical solution of two-dimensional channel flow over a backward-facing step

Laminar channel flow over a backward-facing step is investigated. The finite analytic (FA) method is used to obtain the numerical solution. The FA solutions predict the recirculation zone lengths and the recirculated mass flow rates for Reynolds numbers, Re, of 25, 50, 73, 125, 191 and 229 which correlate well with experimental measurements. The general flow patterns of the recirculation region flows for the Reynolds numbers considered in this study are similar to each other.

An improved method of Nusselt number calculation

A novel method for calculating the Nusselt number, Nu, in a steady-state Rayleigh-Benard convection problem is presented, in which calculations are done for a square box with constant temperature, free-slip boundary conditions at the top and bottom, and a reflection symmetry along the side walls. The element heat flux is obtained by averaging over the entire element; element heat fluxes are then projected to the adjacent nodes. Compared with previous methods, the approach reduces the calculated depth variation in horizontally averaged flux by more than a factor of 10 and shows more rapid convergence of Nu as a function of grid size.

PIC numerical scheme for a two-dimensional Eulerian code

The present work uses the PIC method with operator splitting to hydroelastoplastic multimaterial flow problems in 2D Eulerian coordinates. The operator splitting procedures are carried out in both Lagrangian and remap phases with alternating direction for each time advancement to maintain the accuracy of one-dimensional scheme. A detail description of the numerical approximations is given with a sample calculation of a tungsten rod penetrating an aluminum target.

Oscillator strengths for S I, S II, and S III

A series of calculations for atomic data of various sulfur and oxygen ions is examined. Recent observations of the Io plasma torus obtained with the Voyager UV Spectrometer, the IUE satellite short wavelength spectrograph, and the rocket-borne faint object telescope are discussed. The calculation of oscillator strengths for S II, the P I sequence, S I, and S III in terms of configuration interaction effects is described. The derivation of orbital wave functions is considered. The use of the close coupling method to estimate collision strengths is studied. The accuracy of these calculations depends on: (1) the number of states used in the close coupling expansion; (2) resonance contributions to the thermally averaged collision strength; and (3) the quality of the target state wave functions. Tables of the derived oscillator strengths are presented.

Analyses and assessments of span wise gust gradient data from NASA B-57B aircraft

Analysis of turbulence measured across the airfoil of a Cambera B-57 aircraft is reported. The aircraft is instrumented with probes for measuring wind at both wing tips and at the nose. Statistical properties of the turbulence are reported. These consist of the standard deviations of turbulence measured by each individual probe, standard deviations and probability distribution of differences in turbulence measured between probes and auto- and two-point spatial correlations and spectra. Procedures associated with calculations of two-point spatial correlations and spectra utilizing data were addressed. Methods and correction procedures for assuring the accuracy of aircraft measured winds are also described. Results are found, in general, to agree with correlations existing in the literature. The velocity spatial differences fit a Gaussian/Bessel type probability distribution. The turbulence agrees with the von Karman turbulence correlation and with two-point spatial correlations developed from the von Karman correlation.

Further study of inversion layer MOS solar cells

A group of inversion layer MOS solar cells has been fabricated. The highest value of open-circuit voltage obtained for the cells is 0.568V. One of the cells has produced a short-circuit current of 79.6 mA and an open-circuit voltage of 0.54V. It is estimated that the actual area AMO efficiency of this cell is 6.6 percent with an assumed value of 0.75 for its fill factor. Efforts made for fabricating an IL/MOS cell with reasonable efficiencies are reported. Future work for 4 sq cm IL cells and 25 sq cm IL cells is discussed.

Flap-lag-torsion aeroelastic stability of a circulation control rotor in forward flight

The aeroelastic stability of a circulation control rotor blade undergoing three degrees of motion (flap, lag, and torsion) is investigated in forward flight. Quasi-steady strip theory is used to evaluate the aerodynamics forces; and the airfoil characteristics are from data tables. The propulsive and the auxiliary power trims are calculated from vehicle and rotor equilibrium equations through the numerical integration of element forces in azimuth as well as in radial directions. The nonlinear time dependent periodic blade response is calculated using an iterative procedure based on Floquet theory. The periodic perturbation equations are solved for stability using Floquet transition matrix theory. The effects of several parameters on blade stability are examined, including advance ratio, collective pitch, thrust level, shaft tilt, structural stiffnesses variation, and propulsive and auxiliary power trims.

Pressure measurements of impinging jet with asymmetric nozzle

For modern aircraft, impinging surfaces are commonly used as a device for obtaining vector thrust from engine exhaust. The nature of dynamic loading is important to understand for design purposes. In this study, the frequency, mode, and level of pressure fluctuations generated by an elliptic jet are examined. The elliptic jet is used because it has several operational advantages over a circular jet.

Modulation and coding for fast fading mobile satellite communication channels

The performance of Gaussian baseband filtered minimum shift keying (GMSK) using differential detection in fast Rician fading, with a novel treatment of the inherent intersymbol interference (ISI) leading to an exact solution is discussed. Trellis-coded differentially coded phase shift keying (DPSK) with a convolutional interleaver is considered. The channel is the Rician Channel with the line-of-sight component subject to a lognormal transformation.

Experimental study of planetary gases with applications to planetary interior models

High-pressure experimental data on planetary materials are critical in developing planetary models and in addressing otherwise insoluble problems of the internal structure of the major planets. Progress in the last five years has been particularly marked. Maximum static pressure of 550 GPa was achieved. For the first time, X-ray diffraction of solidified gases (Ne, Xe) and ices (H2O) were obtained at pressures above one megabar, single-crystal diffraction of ultralight elements (H2, He) were detected up to 25 GPa, pressures over 200 GPa at 77 K were reached in solid hydrogen, including the discovery of a phase transformation in the molecular solid. Advances in instrumentation and new measurements performed during 1983 to 1988 are summarized.

Ultra-low-noise cryogenic high-electron-mobility transistors

Quarter-micrometer gate-length high-electron-mobility transistors (HEMTs) for cryogenic low-noise application with very low light sensitivity have been developed. At room temperature, these exhibit a noise figure of 0.4 dB with associated gain of 15 dB at 8 GHz. At a temperature of 12.5 K the minimum noise temperature of 5.3 +/- 1.5 K has been measured at 8.5 GHz, which is the best noise performance observed to date for any microwave transistors. The results clearly demonstrate the potential for low-temperature low-noise applications.

Scale model acoustic testing of counterrotating fans

The UDF contrarotating propfan has been subjected to scale model wind tunnel testing to ascertain both general performance and acoustic characteristics data bases. Model Propulsion Simulator test rigs able to mount contrarotating fan blades of up to 24.5-inch diameter were used, and one of these was installed in a large anechoic test chamber for acoustic measurement of conditions simulating representative takeoffs, power cutbacks, and landing approaches. Attention is presently given to the data acquisition/reduction systems, the scaling criteria used to obtain engine size acoustic data, and comparisons with demonstrator aircraft in-flight acoustic test results.

PC-CUBE: A Personal Computer Based Hypercube

PC-CUBE is an ensemble of IBM PCs or close compatibles connected in the hypercube topology with ordinary computer cables. Communication occurs at the rate of 115.2 K-band via the RS-232 serial links. Available for PC-CUBE is the Crystalline Operating System III (CrOS III), Mercury Operating System, CUBIX and PLOTIX which are parallel I/O and graphics libraries. A CrOS performance monitor was developed to facilitate the measurement of communication and computation time of a program and their effects on performance. Also available are CXLISP, a parallel version of the XLISP interpreter; GRAFIX, some graphics routines for the EGA and CGA; and a general execution profiler for determining execution time spent by program subroutines. PC-CUBE provides a programming environment similar to all hypercube systems running CrOS III, Mercury and CUBIX. In addition, every node (personal computer) has its own graphics display monitor and storage devices. These allow data to be displayed or stored at every processor, which has much instructional value and enables easier debugging of applications. Some application programs which are taken from the book Solving Problems on Concurrent Processors (Fox 88) were implemented with graphics enhancement on PC-CUBE. The applications range from solving the Mandelbrot set, Laplace equation, wave equation, long range force interaction, to WaTor, an ecological simulation.

Axions, SN 1987A, and one pion exchange

Nucleon-nucleon, axion bremsstrahlung is the primary mechanism for axion emission from the nascent neutron star associated with SN 1987A, and the rate for this process has been calculated in the one pion exchange approximation (OPE). The axion mass limit which follows from SN 1987A, m sub a less than or approx equal to 10 to the -3 eV, is the most stringent astrophysical bound, and has received much scrutiny. It has been suggested that by using OPE to calculate the cross section for the analog process, pp yields pp + pi sup o, and comparing the result of the experimental data one can test the validity of this approximation, and further, that such a comparison indicates that OPE leads to a value for this cross section which is a factor of 30 to 40 too large. If true, this would suggest that the axion mass limit should be revised upward by a factor of approximately 6. The cross section for pp yields pp + pi sup o using OPE is carefully evaluated, and excellent agreement found (to better than a factor of 2) with the experimental data.

Impact of device level faults in a digital avionic processor

This study describes an experimental analysis of the impact of gate and device-level faults in the processor of a Bendix BDX-930 flight control system. Via mixed mode simulation, faults were injected at the gate (stuck-at) and at the transistor levels and, their propagation through the chip to the output pins was measured. The results show that there is little correspondence between a stuck-at and a device-level fault model, as far as error activity or detection within a functional unit is concerned. In so far as error activity outside the injected unit and at the output pins are concerned, the stuck-at and device models track each other. The stuck-at model, however, overestimates, by over 100 percent, the probability of fault propagation to the output pins. An evaluation of the Mean Error Durations and the Mean Time Between Errors at the output pins shows that the stuck-at model significantly underestimates (by 62 percent) the impact of an internal chip fault on the output pins. Finally, the study also quantifies the impact of device fault by location, both internally and at the output pins.
