In-situ anodic precipitation process for highly efficient separation of aluminum alloys

Electrorefining process has been widely used to separate and purify metals, but it is limited by deposition potential of the metal itself. Here we report in-situ anodic precipitation (IAP), a modified electrorefining process, to purify aluminium from contaminants that are more reactive. During IAP, the target metals that are more cathodic than aluminium are oxidized at the anode and forced to precipitate out in a low oxidation state. This strategy is fundamentally based on different solubilities of target metal chlorides in the NaAlCl4 molten salt rather than deposition potential of metals. The results suggest that IAP is able to efficiently and simply separate components of aluminum alloys with fast kinetics and high recovery yields, and it is also a valuable synthetic approach for metal chlorides in low oxidation states.

A High Power Density and High Efficiency Traction Drive Based on a Segmented Inverter and an Axial and Radial Flux Hybrid Machine

Eaton Corporation and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) collaborated to develop a high performance traction drive system aimed at increasing power density and overall efficiency. The system integrates Eaton’s hybrid flux motor—combining radial and axial flux paths to convert end-winding and structural elements into torque-producing components—with ORNL’s high-power-density segmented inverter. This motor design achieves higher torque density within the same footprint as traditional radial flux machines by effectively utilizing end turns. ORNL’s segmented inverter reduces the DC bus capacitor requirement by over 50% compared to standard voltage source inverters (VSIs), achieving power densities exceeding 100 kVA/L. The dual-module architecture also enables six-phase operation, aligning with Eaton’s motor design. Together, the motor and inverter offer a compact, efficient traction drive system with the potential for significant reductions in system weight and improvements in powertrain efficiency.

A Top-Down Strategy to Engineer ActiveLayer Morphology for Highly Efficient and Stable All-Polymer Solar Cells

A major challenge hindering the further development of all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) employing polymerized small-molecule acceptors is the relatively low fill factor (FF) due to the difficulty in controlling the active-layer morphology. The issues typically arise from oversized phase separation resulting from the thermodynamically unfavorable mixing between two macromolecular species, and disordered molecular orientation/packing of highly anisotropic polymer chains. Herein, a facile top-down controlling strategy to engineer the morphology of all-polymer blends is developed by leveraging the layer-by-layer (LBL) deposition. Optimal intermixing of polymer components can be achieved in the two-step process by tuning the bottom-layer polymer swelling during top-layer deposition. Consequently, both the molecular orientation/packing of the bottom layer and the molecular ordering of the top layer can be optimized with a suitable top-layer processing solvent. A favorable morphology with gradient vertical composition distribution for efficient charge transport and extraction is therefore realized, affording a high all-PSC efficiency of 17.0% with a FF of 76.1%. The derived devices also possess excellent long-term thermal stability and can retain >90% of their initial efficiencies after being annealed at 65 °C for 1300 h. In conclusion, these results validate the distinct advantages of employing an LBL processing protocol to fabricate high-performance all-PSCs.

Heavy doping effects in high efficiency silicon solar cells

The use of a (silicon)/(heavily doped polysilicon)/(metal) structure to replace the conventional high-low junction (or back-surface-field, BSF) structure of silicon solar cells was examined. The results of an experimental study designed to explore both qualitatively and quantitatively the mechanism of the improved current gain in bipolar transistors with polysilicon emitter contact are presented. A reciprocity theorem is presented that relates the short circuit current of a device, induced by a carrier generation source, to the minority carrier Fermi level in the dark. A method for accurate measurement of minority-carrier diffusion coefficients in silicon is described.

Directing High-Efficiency Na Plating with Carbon–Aluminum Junction Interfaces for Anode-Free Na Metal Batteries

Anode-free sodium metal batteries are highly promising for future energy storage but suffer from much faster cycling degradation as they are sensitive to even trace levels of irreversible side reactions. This work focuses on the most practical Al foil current collectors and systematically examined the effect of nano-sized carbon coating on improving the Na plating and stripping stability. We identified that the carbon-Al junction interface generated by carbon coating enabled more uniform Na depositing with lower overpotentials, delivering higher than 99.8% Faradaic efficiencies for a wide range of cycling currents between 0.5 and 3.0 mA cm -2 . This performance is much better than the 96.4% efficiency observed on uncoated Al foils under the same conditions, and was also confirmed under lean electrolyte and freezing electrolyte conditions, and can be attributed to the stronger interfacial binding and enhanced sodiophilic properties of the carbon-aluminum junction sites. Furthermore, these sites not only ensure uniform Na plating but also eliminates side reactions that would otherwise cause electrolyte depletion. As a result, Na-metal free full cells assembled with high capacity Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 cathode delivered ~ 85% capacity retention for 100 cycles, higher than the 73% of retention of uncoated Al foil.

CHEETAH: Compact High Efficiency Electrically Tunable Amplifier (Final Report)

The goal of this project was to develop a new type of optically triggered, high speed and high power switch for radiofrequency applications with potential to exceed current state-of-the-art power and bandwidth. This device operates under a new operation principle, where discrete packets of charge carriers are generated with defined size. These are then swept out of the device at high enough fields to prevent diffusion and expansion of these packets. Individual pulse widths are determined by the spatial extent of these packets and their drift velocity, which would enable control over both amplitude and frequency by control of the initial packet size, illumination intensity, and applied voltage. This effort demonstrated this new mode of operation, while uncovering a new regime of pulse compression using negative differential mobility (NDM) semiconductors such as GaAs, where the output electrical pulse is substantially shorter than the input optical pulse.

Modeling of high efficiency solar cells under laser pulse for power beaming applications

Solar cells have been used to convert sunlight to electrical energy for many years and also offer great potential for non-solar energy conversion applications. Their greatly improved performance under monochromatic light compared to sunlight, makes them suitable as photovoltaic (PV) receivers in laser power beaming applications. Laser beamed power to a PV array receiver could provide power to satellites, an orbital transfer vehicle, or a lunar base. Gallium arsenide (GaAs) and indium phosphide (InP) solar cells have calculated efficiencies of more than 50 percent under continuous illumination at the optimum wavelength. Currently high power free-electron lasers are being developed which operate in pulsed conditions. Understanding cell behavior under a laser pulse is important in the selection of the solar cell material and the laser. An experiment by NAsA lewis and JPL at the AVLIS laser facility in Livermore, CA presented experimental data on cell performance under pulsed laser illumination. Reference 5 contains an overview of technical issues concerning the use of solar cells for laser power conversion, written before the experiments were performed. As the experimental results showed, the actual effects of pulsed operation are more complicated. Reference 6 discusses simulations of the output of GaAs concentrator solar cells under pulsed laser illumination. The present paper continues this work, and compares the output of Si and GaAs solar cells.

High efficiency continuous-flow production of radioisotopes

Methods and systems are provided for continuous-flow production of radioisotopes with high specific activity. Radioisotopes with high specific activity produced according to the methods described are also provided. The methods can include causing a liquid capture matrix to contact a target containing a target nuclide; irradiating the target with radiation, ionizing radiation, particles, or a combination thereof to produce the radionuclides that are ejected from the target and into the capture matrix; and causing the liquid capture matrix containing the radionuclides to flow from the target to recover the capture matrix containing the radionuclides with high specific activity. The methods are suitable for the production of a variety of radionuclides. For example, in some aspects the target nuclide is 237Np, and the radionuclide is 238Np that decays to produce 238Pu. In other aspects, the target nuclide is 98Mo, and the radionuclide is Mo that decays to produce 99mTc.

High-Efficiency, Medium-Voltage-Input, Solid-State-Transformer-Based 400-kW/1000V/400A Extreme Fast Charger for Electric Vehicles

Range anxiety and long battery charging time continue to be critical challenges to mass adaptation of EVs. A major identified gap to wider adoption of BEVs is the ability and availability to refuel quickly or to fast charge. Studies have shown that in areas where drivers have access to 50-kW or 120-kW fast charge stations, annual electric vehicle (EV) miles traveled (i.e., eVMT) increased by over 25%, even in cases where fast charging was used for 1% to 5% of total charging events. Charge stations of higher power not only alleviate the “range anxiety” and reduce the driver’s waiting time, but also requires less investment. Michigan Energy Office completed a study in early 2019 titled “Electric Vehicle Charger Placement Optimization in Michigan: Phase I – Highways”. This study finds a system with 150kW chargers, though more expensive individually, actually has lower total system cost when compared to a 50kW charging system when serving the same battery size EV. To be truly competitive to the ICEV refueling experience, even higher power stations are necessary. However, high power charge stations would create large power draws from the grid. If this occurs during peak demand periods, grid capacity could be overloaded. This problem needs to be addressed to reduce the impact on the electric utility infrastructure. The main goal of this project is to develop a 400-kW/400-A XFC system targeting total efficiency of 96.5 percent from the MVAC grid to a vehicle. The novel SST power cell topology, combined with a new silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFET device, enables a 3.5 percent improvement in system efficiency, a 50-percent smaller equipment footprint, and four times less weight than today’s DCFC systems. The SST technology would directly utilize MVAC at 4.8-kV or 13.2-kV. This would eliminate the line frequency transformer (LFT), which steps down medium-voltage AC to 3-Phase 480-V line-to-line voltage in current DCFC systems.

The HP 85192B EEFet3 GaAs FET Nonlinear Model Used in the High Efficiency Microwave Power Amplifier (HEMPA)

Most nonlinear circuit analysis programs that exist today were designed primarily for transient analysis. By incorporating more accurate models in simulation programs, accurate predictions of GaAs field effect transistors (FET) behavior can be accomplished. However, should the designer need to simulate GaAs FETs that operate at high DC-to-RF conversion efficiencies, a more sophisticated model is needed. A relevant and appropriate method is called harmonic-balance, as described by Quere et al.

Slippery liquid infused porous surface (SLIPS) condensers for high efficiency air gap membrane distillation

Abstract To address growing water scarcity, we must improve the energy efficiency of thermal desalination technologies such as air gap membrane distillation. However, promising functional materials such as slippery liquid infused porous surfaces have not yet implemented for any desalination technology. Here, we fabricate and test slippery liquid infused porous surfaces (using Krytox 16,256 lubricant and CuO nanostructures) in an air gap membrane distillation apparatus. System-level transport models, validated by experimental data, establish a framework for improving performance through enhanced condensation surfaces. Results are obtained across a range of temperatures (50–80 °C), salinities (5–105 g/kg), and module lengths. We find that small air gap thickness and efficient droplet shedding significantly improves performance. The CuO Krytox process achieves these with a conductive-self-limiting coating, high nanostructure rugosity, strong covalent and metallic bonding, high hydrophobicity, minimal droplet pinning sites, and ultra-low contact angle hysteresis. The greatest efficiency enhancement from SLIPS is derived from the improved droplet shedding, which allows for reduced gap sizes without flooding, and is further augmented by the increased permeate flux.

Highly efficient removal and sequestration of Cr(VI) in confined MoS 2 interlayer Nanochannels: Performance and mechanism

Environmental contamination by Cr(VI) is of particular concern because of its severe toxicity and high mobility. In this study, we employed two-dimensional MoS 2 nanosheets in the removal of Cr(VI), with an emphasis on revealing the removal mechanisms, and how the compositional and structural uniqueness of 2D MoS 2 nanomaterials intrinsically impact the Cr removal efficiency. Through batch experiments with dispersed nanosheets, we found that MoS 2 nanosheets exhibited a high Cr(VI) removal capacity at ~1100 mg/g via a phase-dependent mechanism. Particularly, the 1T polymorph in the MoS 2 nanosheets removed Cr(VI) through a redox-reaction mechanism, which was different from the adsorptive removal of Cr(VI) by MoS 2 reported previously, highlighting the compositional effects on the removal mechanism and performance. More importantly, the reduced product Cr(III) was concurrently removed via precipitation and adsorption onto the MoS 2 nanosheets, which could avoid the additional pH-elevation step that is typically needed in the conventional treatment. The unique 2D flake-like structure of MoS 2 nanosheets enabled the formation of aligned and ion-accessible nanochannels, where Cr(VI) species were accommodated, reduced and sequestered. The irreversible shrinking of the nanochannels under drying modified the interior of the layer-stacked structure into confined compartments preventing the release and re-oxidation of the immobilized Cr(III). In conclusion, the compiled results highlight the effects of MoS 2 composition and structure on the Cr removal efficiency and mechanism, which has substantial implications on future studies tailoring these unique features of 2D nanomaterials for various remediation scenarios.

Highly Efficient Organosulfur and Lithium‐Metal Hosts Enabled by C@Fe 3 N Sponge

Abstract Lithium‐organosulfur (Li‐OS) batteries, despite possessing high theoretical specific capacity, encounter a few practical challenges, including unsatisfactory lifespan and low active material utilization under realistic conditions. Here, diisoropyl xanthogen polysulfide (DIXPS) has been selected as a model organosulfur compound to investigate the practical feasibility of Li‐OS batteries under realistic conditions. A well‐designed freestanding carbon sponge decorated with Fe 3 N nanoparticles (C@Fe 3 N) is introduced into the Li‐OS cells as a scaffold for both Li and DIXPS. The lithiophilic property of the C@Fe 3 N host guides uniform lithium deposition at the anode, and the catalysis of the DIXPS conversion reaction promotes the kinetics at the cathode. Impressively, the synergistic effect of C@Fe 3 N leads to an extremely stable cycling performance over 1 000 cycles in a Li‐OS full cell under realistic conditions.

Late-Stage Oxidation of C( sp 3 )─H Bonds with High Efficiency and Alkyl Group Dihydroxylation of Complex Molecules

Here, the late-stage oxidation of C(sp 3 )─H bonds is highly valuable for modulating the solubility and binding of bioactive compounds and for diversification of complex molecules. Undirected methods for C(sp 3 )─H oxidation are valuable for the installation of hydroxyl groups at sites remote from other functional groups present in the molecule, but existing catalysts are limited by low turnover numbers and lengthy ligand syntheses. Perfluorinated ruthenium porphyrins are highly active catalysts for the oxidation of alkyl C─H bonds, but the scope of the transformation with complex molecules under conditions of limiting substrate has not been investigated. We report that carbonylruthenium(II) tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)porphyrin [Ru(TPFPP)(CO)] catalyzes the selective oxidation of tertiary C(sp 3 )─H bonds in a broad range of complex natural products and drugs, with turnover numbers as high as 1000, and the tolerance of the reaction to various functional groups was rapidly assessed by performing a model reaction in the presence of additives. We show how the combination of this undirected C(sp 3 )─H oxidation and a directed C(sp 3 )─H silylation and oxidation provides rapid access to highly oxidized, 1,2-diol derivatives of natural products by a formal dihydroxylation of an alkyl group.
