Skin friction measurements in high temperature high speed flows

An experimental investigation was conducted to measure skin friction along the chamber walls of supersonic combustors. A direct force measurement device was used to simultaneously measure an axial and transverse component of the small tangential shear force passing over a non-intrusive floating element. The floating head is mounted to a stiff cantilever beam arrangement with deflection due to the flow on the order of 0.00254 mm (0.0001 in.). This allowed the instrument to be a non-nulling type. A second gauge was designed with active cooling of the floating sensor head to eliminate non-uniform temperature effects between the sensor head and the surrounding wall. Samples of measurements made in combustor test facilities at NASA Langley Research Center and at the General Applied Science Laboratory (GASL) are presented. Skin friction coefficients between 0.001 - 0.005 were measured dependent on the facility and measurement location. Analysis of the measurement uncertainties indicate an accuracy to within +/- 10-15 percent of the streamwise component.

Correlative studies of astrophysical sources of very high and ultra high energy gamma-rays

During the period of this contract, June 1, 1991 to November 14, 1992, the major results of our research effort have come from the Whipple air shower experiment in Tucson, AZ. The most notable development has been the discovery of TeV photons from the BL Lac object, Markarian 421. This result depended critically on the identification of Mrk 421 by the EGRET team as a source of GeV gamma rays.

The Giotto Extended Mission (GEM) - High risk, high payoff

In February 1990, ESA began reactivation of the Giotto spacecraft, which had been dormant for the previous four years, via the omnidirectional low-gain antenna mounted atop the Giotto. By the end of April 1990, spacecraft temperatures had been reduced to levels at which the experiments could be activated; of the original complement of ten experiment modules, the magnetometer, energetic particle analyzer, and optical probe experiment were fully functional, and an additional three instruments were partly damaged but usable. A mission that targetted Comet Grigg-Skjellerup 214 million km from the earth was then put into effect.

High-efficiency high-gain monolithic heterostructure FET amplifier at 31 GHz

A three-stage heterostructure FET monolithic amplifier has achieved a power-added efficiency of 36 percent with 200 mW output and 18 dB gain at 31 GHz. At a higher drain voltage, the output power increases to 280 mW (with 17.5 dB gain and 31 percent PAE) at a power density of 0.7 W/mm. The MMIC chip measures 2.63 x 1.35 sq mm and requires only a single drain bias and a single gate bias.
