Rooftop Unit (RTU) Maintenance Guide

The commercial buildings industry has long emphasized affordability, energy efficiency, and useful service life in rooftop unit (RTU) equipment. The trade-offs between these characteristics can impact decisions about the initial cost of equipment and ongoing operating costs. Often, the desire for lower initial costs leads to adoption of low-efficiency systems or neglect of proper maintenance in the interest of short-term cost savings. Maintenance of these systems is a critical step to ensure system efficiency and reliability, low operating costs, and a reasonable payback period. This guide is intended for facility managers who own or are interested in purchasing and installing RTUs and need to familiarize themselves with the maintenance requirements. This resource contains best practices, important considerations, and additional information related to commercial RTU equipment, but does not replace manufacturer-specific instructions.

CaloTrilogy: Toward a Breakthrough in One-Step, End-to-End, Physics-Guided Shower Generation for Modern Calorimeters

High-precision calorimeter simulation at current and future colliders imposes rapidly growing computational demands, motivating the development of machine-learning surrogates for traditional Monte Carlo tools such as Geant4. Flow matching and diffusion-based generative models have become leading approaches for high-dimensional fast simulation because of their sample quality, but typically require ${\cal O}(100)$ function evaluations at inference and often rely on auxiliary networks to constrain global observables, compromising streamlined end-to-end generation. We introduce a unified framework that improves the balance between speed, shower quality, and physics fidelity. The method combines: (i) an average velocity field integrator that enables sampling in one or a few evaluations; (ii) a learned generative prior in shower space, constructed from data rather than random noise; and (iii) physics-guided loss terms that impose inductive biases on key observables during training. These elements are training time regularizers, preserving end-to-end inference with no additional cost. With only one or a few evaluation steps, the model achieves shower quality competitive with state-of-the-art flow and diffusion approaches, tested on several public high granularity calorimeter datasets. The results demonstrate inter-layer shower structure consistent with the underlying physics, providing a strong candidate for future fast simulation workflows.

Theory-guided design of duplex-phase multi-principal-element alloys

Density-functional theory (DFT) is used to identify phase-equilibria in multi-principal-element and high-entropy alloys (MPEAs/HEAs), including duplex-phase and eutectic microstructures. Here, a combination of composition-dependent formation energy and electronic-structure-based ordering parameters were used to identify a transition from FCC to BCC favoring mixtures, and these predictions experimentally validated in the Al-Co-Cr-Cu-Fe-Ni system. A sharp crossover in lattice structure and dual-phase stability as a function of composition were predicted via DFT and validated experimentally. The impact of solidification kinetics and thermodynamic stability was explored experimentally using a range of techniques, from slow (castings) to rapid (laser remelting), which showed a decoupling of phase fraction from thermal history, i.e., phase fraction was found to be solidification rate-independent, enabling tuning of a multi-modal cell and grain size ranging from nanoscale through macroscale. Strength and ductility tradeoffs for select processing parameters were investigated via uniaxial tension and small-punch testing on specimens manufactured via powder-based additive manufacturing (directed-energy deposition). This work establishes a pathway for design and optimization of next-generation multiphase superalloys via tailoring of structural and chemical ordering in concentrated solid solutions.

Visual feedback and guided balance training in an immersive virtual reality environment for lower extremity rehabilitation

Balance training is essential for physical rehabilitation procedures, as it can improve functional mobility and enhance cognitive coordination. However, conventional balance training methods may have limitations in terms of motivation, real-time objective feedback, and personalization, which a virtual reality (VR) setup may provide a better alternative. In this work, we present an immersive VR training environment for lower extremity balance rehabilitation with real-time guidance and feedback. The VR training environment immerses the user in a 3D ice rink model where a virtual coach (agent) leads them through a series of balance poses, and the user controls a trainee avatar with their own movements. Here we developed two coaching styles: positive-reinforcement and autonomous-supportive, and two viewpoints of the trainee avatar: first-person and third-person. The proposed environment was evaluated in a user study with healthy, non-clinical participants (n = 16, 24.4 ± 5.7 years old, 9 females). Our results show that participants showed stronger performance in the positive-reinforcement style compared to the autonomous-supportive style. Additionally, in the third-person viewpoint, the participants exhibited more stability in the positive-reinforcement style compared to the autonomous-supportive style. For viewpoint, participants exhibited stronger performance in the first-person viewpoint compared to third-person in the autonomous-supportive style, while they were comparable in the positive-reinforcement style. We observed no significant effects on the foot height and number of mistakes. Furthermore, we report the analysis of user performance with balance training poses and subjective measures based on questionnaires to assess the user experience, usability, and task load. The proposed VR balance training could offer an interactive, adaptive, and engaging environment and open new potential research directions for lower extremity rehabilitation.

Planning Roadmap for DER Integration in India: Industry Best Practices and Resource Guide

Ensuring safe, reliable, cost-effective DER integration at scale requires holistic planning, broad stakeholder engagement, and should address key development areas such as standards adoption, equipment testing and certification, interoperability and cybersecurity, interconnection procedures, and advanced forecasting and DER management. Each of these areas currently represent significant challenges for utilities, regulators, OEMs, developers, and even consumers worldwide. India has already seen significant growth of DERs and has announced targets for substantial growth yet to come, with the potential for DERs to make up a non-negligible portion of the country's overall generation capacity. As such, it is of critical importance that Indian stakeholders consider the potential impacts of wide-spread adoption of DERs and take preemptive action related to the five development areas listed here, among others. India should consider strategies including the adoption of key DER standards related to interconnection, testing, and cybersecurity; enabling effective and secure communication channels for DER interoperability; testing and certifying DER equipment in accredited testing laboratories; building robust, streamlined interconnection procedures; and revamping legacy system planning structures to incorporate DERs in a holistic planning framework.

A Graded, Porous Composite of Natural Biopolymers and Octacalcium Phosphate Guides Osteochondral Differentiation of Stem Cells

Abstract Lesions involving the osteochondral unit are difficult to treat. Biomimetic scaffolds are previously shown as promising alternative. Such devices often lack multiple functional layers that mimic bone, cartilage, and the interface. In this study, multilayered scaffolds are developed based on the use of natural extracellular matrix (ECM)‐like biopolymers. Particular attention is paid to obtain a complex matrix that mimics the native osteochondral transition. Porous, sponge‐like chitosan‐collagen‐octacalcium phosphate (OCP) scaffolds are obtained. Collagen content increases while the amount of OCP particles decreases toward the cartilage layer. The scaffolds are bioactive as a mineral layer is deposited containing hydroxyapatite at the bony side. The scaffolds stimulate proliferation of human adipose‐derived mesenchymal stem cells, but the degree of proliferation depends on the cell seeding density. The scaffolds give rise to a zone‐specific gene expression. RUNX2, COL1A1, BGLAP, and SPP1 are upregulated in the bony layer of the scaffold. SOX9 is upregulated concomitant with COL2A1 expression in the cartilage zone. Mineralization in presence of the cells is prominent in the bone area with Ca and P steadily increasing over time. These results are encouraging for the fabrication of biomimetic scaffolds using ECM‐like materials and featuring gradients that mimic native tissues and their interface.

Machine Learning Guided Synthesis of Flash Graphene

Advances in nanoscience have enabled the synthesis of nanomaterials, such as graphene, from low-value or waste materials through flash Joule heating. Though this capability is promising, the complex and entangled variables that govern nanocrystal formation in the Joule heating process remain poorly understood. In this work, machine learning (ML) models are constructed to explore the factors that drive the transformation of amorphous carbon into graphene nanocrystals during flash Joule heating. An XGBoost regression model of crystallinity achieves an r 2 score of 0.8051 ± 0.054. Feature importance assays and decision trees extracted from these models reveal key considerations in the selection of starting materials and the role of stochastic current fluctuations in flash Joule heating synthesis. Furthermore, partial dependence analyses demonstrate the importance of charge and current density as predictors of crystallinity, implying a progression from reaction-limited to diffusion-limited kinetics as flash Joule heating parameters change. Finally, a practical application of the ML models is shown by using Bayesian meta-learning algorithms to automatically improve bulk crystallinity over many Joule heating reactions. Furthermore, these results illustrate the power of ML as a tool to analyze complex nanomanufacturing processes and enable the synthesis of 2D crystals with desirable properties by flash Joule heating.

Artificial Intelligence Guided Studies of van der Waals Magnets

A materials informatics framework to explore a large number of candidate van der Waals (vdW) materials is developed. In particular, in this study a large space of monolayer transition metal halides is investigated by combining high-throughput density functional theory calculations and artificial intelligence (AI) to accelerate the discovery of stable materials and the prediction of their magnetic properties. Here, the formation energy is used as a proxy for chemical stability. Semi-supervised learning is harnessed to mitigate the challenges of sparsely labeled materials data in order to improve the performance of AI models. This approach creates avenues for the rapid discovery of chemically stable vdW magnets by leveraging the ability of AI to recognize patterns in data, to learn mathematical representations of materials from data and to predict materials properties. Using this approach, previously unexplored vdW magnetic materials with potential applications in data storage and spintronics are identified.

Reinforcement Learning-Guided Long-Timescale Simulation of Hydrogen Transport in Metals

Diffusion in alloys is an important class of atomic processes. However, atomistic simulations of diffusion in chemically complex solids are confronted with the timescale problem: the accessible simulation time is usually far shorter than that of experimental interest. In this work, long-timescale simulation methods are developed using reinforcement learning (RL) that extends simulation capability to match the duration of experimental interest. Two special limits, RL transition kinetics simulator (TKS) and RL low-energy states sampler (LSS), are implemented and explained in detail, while the meaning of general RL are also discussed. As a testbed, hydrogen diffusivity is computed using RL TKS in pure metals and a medium entropy alloy, CrCoNi, and compared with experiments. The algorithm can produce counter-intuitive hydrogen-vacancy cooperative motion. We also demonstrate that RL LSS can accelerate the sampling of low-energy configurations compared to the Metropolis–Hastings algorithm, using hydrogen migration to copper (111) surface as an example.

Lattice Symmetry-Guided Charge Transport in 2D Supramolecular Polymers Promotes Triplet Formation

Singlet-to-triplet intersystem crossing (ISC) in organic molecules is intimately connected with their geometries: by modifying the molecular shape, symmetry selection rules pertaining to spin-orbit coupling can be partially relieved, leading to extra matrix elements for increased ISC. As an analog to this molecular design concept, the study finds that the lattice symmetry of supramolecular polymers also defines their triplet formation efficiencies. A supramolecular polymer self-assembled from weakly interacting molecules is considered. Its 2D oblique unit cell effectively renders it as a coplanar array of 1D molecular columns weakly bound to each other. Using momentum-resolved photoluminescence imaging in combination with Monte Carlo simulations, the study found that photogenerated charge carriers in the supramolecular polymer predominantly recombine as spin-uncorrelated carrier pairs through inter-column charge transfer states. This lattice-defined recombination pathway leads to a substantial triplet formation efficiency (≈60%) in the supramolecular polymer. These findings suggest that lattice symmetry of micro-/macroscopic structures relying on intermolecular interactions can be strategized for controlled triplet formation.
