Measuring thermal expansion of multiple specimens at high temperature

Furnace capable of heating 10 specimens to a uniform temperature simultaneously, aids in the measuring of the thermal expansion of each specimen. The specimens are measured with a telescope unit consisting of two microtelescopes. Overall accuracy of the system is estimated to be plus or minus 2 percent at 2000 degrees C.

Isotopically pure magnesium isotope-24 is prepared from magnesium-24 oxide

Apparatus is used to prepare isotopically pure magnesium isotope-24, suitable for use in neutron scattering and polarization experiments. The apparatus permits thermal reduction of magnesium-24 oxide with aluminum and calcium oxide, and subsequent vaporization of the product metal in vacuum. It uses a resistance-heated furnace tube and cap assembly.

Development of techniques for forming segments of a parabolic solar concentrator

This report covers a comprehensive research study of Androforming, explosive forming, and stretch forming as applied to shaping a parabolic reflector segment for use in a solar furnace. Development efforts were directed toward attaining accurate part contour, and assurance of process reproducibility. The three forming processes mentioned above were investigated by qualified contractors. Three test segments formed by each method along with a detailed analysis were submitted to MSFC. It was concluded that optimum results could be obtained with the stretch forming process. The three test segments of the solar concentrator tha.t were produced by this method, and evaluated optically, revealed a maximum contour deviation of O. 76 degrees.

Isothermal drop calorimeter provides measurements for alpha active, pyrophoric materials

Isothermal drop calorimeter measures the heat content of intensely alpha active and pyrophoric materials in inert atmospheres. It consists of a furnace, calorimeter, and aluminum isothermal jacket contained within an inert-atmosphere glove box, which permits the use of unencapsulated materials without exposing personnel to alpha contamination.

Low-cost high-temperature brazing material

Commercially available nickel-copper wire containing 6 and 12 percent nickel is used in high temperature furnace brazing of rocket engine parts. Brazed joints have properties comparable to or better than those brazed with more expensive materials, and cost savings are substantial.

Improved method for cladding the inside of metal tubes

Creep characteristics of molybdenum at high temperature and stress are utilized to compress tungsten foil liner against inner surface of tantalum alloy cylinder to form bond at interface. Temperature and pressure can be accurately controlled and size of workpiece is limited only by furnace size.

Improved fire-resistant coatings

Water-base coatings containing potassium silicate show improvement in areas of quick air-drying, crack, craze, and abrasion resistance, adherence, and leach resistance. Coatings are useful as thermal-barrier layers in furnaces, and as general purpose fire resistant surfaces where vapor impermeability is not a requirement.

Durable cathodes for high-power inert-gas arcs

Cathode design minimizes evaporation of electrode material which may deposit on associated optical surfaces. It also results in stable operation and precise positioning of arc relative to optical collector. Innovation applies to high power light sources and to arcs used in industrial furnaces.
