Measurements of the branching fractions of the P -wave charmonium spin-singlet state h c ( P 1 1 ) → h + h − π 0 / η

Based on ( 2712.4 ± 14.3 ) × 10 6 ψ ( 3686 ) events, we investigate four hadronic decay modes of the P -wave charmonium spin-singlet state h c ( 1 P 1 ) → h + h − π 0 / η ( h = π or K ) via the process ψ ( 3686 ) → π 0 h c at BESIII. The h c → π + π − π 0 decay is observed with a significance of 9.6 σ after taking into account systematic uncertainties. Evidences for h c → K + K − π 0 and h c → K + K − η are found with significances of 3.5 σ and 3.3 σ , respectively, after considering the systematic uncertainties. The branching fractions of these decays are measured to be B ( h c → π + π − π 0 ) = ( 1.36 ± 0.16 ± 0.14 ) × 10 − 3 , B ( h c → K + K − π 0 ) = ( 3.26 ± 0.84 ± 0.36 ) × 10 − 4 , and B ( h c → K + K − η ) = ( 3.13 ± 1.08 ± 0.38 ) × 10 − 4 , where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. No significant signal of h c → π + π − η is found, and the upper limit of its decay branching fraction is determined to be B ( h c → π + π − η ) < 4.0 × 10 − 4 at the 90% confidence level. Measurements of the branching fractions of semileptonic D s + decays via e + e − → D s * + D s * −

We measure the absolute branching fractions of semileptonic D s + decays via the e + e − → D s * + D s * − process using e + e − collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 10.64 fb − 1 collected by the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies between 4.237 and 4.699 GeV. The branching fractions are B ( D s + → η e + ν e ) = ( 2.35 ± 0.11 stat ± 0.10 syst ) % , B ( D s + → η ′ e + ν e ) = ( 0.82 ± 0.09 stat ± 0.04 syst ) % , B ( D s + → ϕ e + ν e ) = ( 2.21 ± 0.16 stat ± 0.11 syst ) % , B ( D s + → f 0 ( 980 ) e + ν e , f 0 ( 980 ) → π + π − ) = ( 0.15 ± 0.02 stat ± 0.01 syst ) % , B ( D s + → K 0 e + ν e ) = ( 0.24 ± 0.0 4 stat ± 0.0 1 syst ) % , and B ( D s + → K * 0 e + ν e ) = ( 0.19 ± 0.0 3 stat ± 0.0 1 syst ) % . These results are consistent with those measured via the e + e − → D s * ± D s ∓ process by BESIII and CLEO. Using two-parameter series expansion, the hadronic transition form factors of D s + → η e + ν e , D s + → η ′ e + ν e , and D s + → K 0 e + ν e are determined to be f + η ( 0 ) = 0.442 ± 0.02 2 stat ± 0.01 7 syst , f + η ′ ( 0 ) = 0.557 ± 0.06 2 stat ± 0.02 4 syst , and f + K 0 ( 0 ) = 0.677 ± 0.09 8 stat ± 0.02 3 syst . Measurement of the branching fraction of the decay J / ψ → p p ¯ η

A high-precision measurement of the branching fraction of the decay J / ψ → p p ¯ η is performed using ( 10 087 ± 44 ) × 10 6 J / ψ events recorded by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring. The branching fractions of the two decays J / ψ → p p ¯ η ( η → γ γ ) and J / ψ → p p ¯ η ( η → π + π − π 0 ) are measured individually to be B ( J / ψ → p p ¯ η ( η → γ γ ) ) = ( 1.480 ± 0.001 ± 0.024 ) × 10 − 3 and B ( J / ψ → p p ¯ η ( η → π + π − π 0 ) ) = ( 1.557 ± 0.003 ± 0.038 ) × 10 − 3 , where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. Both results are compatible within their uncorrelated systematic uncertainties. The combined result is B ( J / ψ → p p ¯ η ) = ( 1.495 ± 0.001 ± 0.023 ) × 10 − 3 , where the first uncertainty is the combined statistical uncertainty and the second one the combined systematic uncertainty of both analyses, incorporating correlations between them. In addition, the p p ¯ threshold region is investigated for a potential threshold enhancement, and no evidence for one is observed. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Observation of time-dependent C P violation and measurement of the branching fraction of B 0 → J / ψ π 0 decays

We present a measurement of the branching fraction and time-dependent charge-parity ( C P ) decay-rate asymmetries in B 0 → J / ψ π 0 decays. The data sample was collected with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB asymmetric e + e − collider in 2019–2022 and contains ( 387 ± 6 ) × 10 6 B B ¯ meson pairs from ϒ ( 4 S ) decays. We reconstruct 392 ± 24 signal decays and fit the C P parameters from the distribution of the proper-decay-time difference of the two B mesons. We measure the branching fraction to be ( B 0 → J / ψ π 0 ) = ( 2.00 ± 0.12 ± 0.09 ) × 10 − 5 and the direct and mixing-induced C P asymmetries to be C C P = 0.13 ± 0.12 ± 0.03 and S C P = − 0.88 ± 0.17 ± 0.03 , respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. We observe mixing-induced C P violation with a significance of 5.0 standard deviations for the first time in this mode. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Measurement of the branching fractions of the decays Λ c + → Λ K S 0 K + , Λ c + → Λ K S 0 π + , and Λ c + → Λ K * +

Studies are performed of the Cabibbo-favored decay Λ c + → Λ K S 0 K + and the singly Cabibbo-suppressed decay Λ c + → Λ K S 0 π + , based on a sample of e + e − collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.5 fb − 1 , accumulated at center-of-mass energies between 4599.53 MeV and 4698.82 MeV with the BESIII detector. The decay Λ c + → Λ K S 0 π + is observed for the first time. The branching fractions of Λ c + → Λ K S 0 K + and Λ c + → Λ K S 0 π + are measured to be ( 3.04 ± 0.30 ± 0.16 ) × 10 − 3 and ( 1.73 ± 0.27 ± 0.10 ) × 10 − 3 , respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. These results correspond to the most precise measurement of these quantities for both decays. Evidence of a K * + contribution in the Λ c + → Λ K S 0 π + decay is found with a statistical significance of 4.71 σ . The branching fraction of Λ c + → Λ K * + is calculated under three possible interference scenarios, with the significance increasing to 5.03 σ when interference is taken into account. Measurement of the branching fraction, polarization, and time-dependent C P asymmetry in B 0 → ρ + ρ − decays and constraint on the CKM angle ϕ 2

We present a measurement of the branching fraction and fraction of longitudinal polarization of B 0 → ρ + ρ − decays, which have two π 0 ’s in the final state. We also measure time-dependent C P violation parameters for decays into longitudinally polarized ρ + ρ − pairs. This analysis is based on a data sample containing ( 387 ± 6 ) × 10 6 ϒ ( 4 S ) mesons collected with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy e + e − collider in 2019–2022. We obtain B ( B 0 → ρ + ρ − ) = ( 2.8 9 − 0.22 + 0.23 − 0.27 + 0.29 ) × 10 − 5 , f L = 0.92 1 − 0.025 + 0.024 − 0.015 + 0.017 , S = − 0.26 ± 0.19 ± 0.08 , and C = − 0.02 ± 0.1 2 − 0.05 + 0.06 , where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. We use these results to perform an isospin analysis to constrain the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa angle ϕ 2 and obtain two solutions; the result consistent with other Standard Model constraints is ϕ 2 = ( 92.6 − 4.7 + 4.5 ) ° . Effective Model for Fractional Topological Corner Modes in Quasicrystals

High-order topological insulators (HOTIs), as generalized from topological crystalline insulators, are characterized with lower-dimensional metallic boundary states protected by spatial symmetries of a crystal, whose theoretical framework based on band inversion at special k points cannot be readily extended to quasicrystals because quasicrystals contain rotational symmetries that are not compatible with crystals, and momentum is no longer a good quantum number. In this work, we develop a low-energy effective model underlying HOTI states in 2D quasicrystals for all possible rotational symmetries. By implementing a novel Fourier transform developed recently for quasicrystals and approximating the long-wavelength behavior by their large-scale average, we construct an effective k · p Hamiltonian to capture the band inversion at the center of a pseudo-Brillouin zone. We show that an in-plane Zeeman field can induce mass kinks at the intersection of adjacent edges of a 2D quasicrystal topological insulators and generate corner modes (CMs) with fractional charge, protected by rotational symmetries. Our model predictions are confirmed by numerical tight-binding calculations. Furthermore, when the quasicrystal is proximitized by an s-wave superconductor, Majorana CMs can also be created by tuning the field strength and chemical potential. Our work affords a generic approach to studying the low-energy physics of quasicrystals, in association with topological excitations and fractional statistics.

Solvable 3D Kondo Lattice Exhibiting Pair Density Wave, Odd-Frequency Pairing, and Order Fractionalization

The Kondo lattice model plays a key role in our understanding of quantum materials, but a lack of small parameters has posed a long-standing problem. We present a 3 dimensional S= 1 2 Kondo lattice model describing a spin liquid within an electron sea. Strong correlations in the spin liquid are treated exactly, enabling a controlled analytical approach. Like a Peierls or BCS phase, a logarithmically divergent susceptibility leads to an instability into a new phase at arbitrarily small Kondo coupling. Our solution captures a plethora of emergent phenomena, including odd-frequency pairing, pair density wave formation and order fractionalization. The ground-state state is a pair density wave with a fractionalized charge e, S = 1/2 order parameter, formed between electrons and Majorana fermions.

Measurement of the dependence of the hadron production fraction ratio $f_\mathrm{s} / f_\mathrm{u}$ and $f_\mathrm{d} / f_ \mathrm{u}$ on B meson kinematic variables in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

The dependence of the ratio between the B$_\mathrm{s}^0$ and B$^+$ hadron production fractions, $f_\mathrm{s} / f_\mathrm{u}$, on the transverse momentum ($p_\mathrm{T}$) and rapidity of the B mesons is studied using the decay channels B$_\mathrm{s}^0$$\to$ J$/\psi\,\phi$ and B$^+$$\to$ J$/\psi$ K$^+$. The analysis uses a data sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, collected by the CMS experiment in 2018 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 61.6 fb$^{-1}$. The $f_\mathrm{s} / f_\mathrm{u}$ ratio is observed to depend on the B $p_\mathrm{T}$ and to be consistent with becoming asymptotically constant at large $p_\mathrm{T}$. No rapidity dependence is observed. The ratio of the B$^0$ to B$^+$ hadron production fractions, $f_\mathrm{d} / f_\mathrm{u}$, measured using the B$^0$$\to$ J$/\psi$ K$^{*0}$ decay channel, is found to be consistent with unity and independent of $p_\mathrm{T}$ and rapidity, as expected from isospin invariance.

Fraction of χ c Decays in Prompt J / ψ Production Measured in p Pb Collisions at s NN = 8.16 TeV

The fraction of χ c 1 and χ c 2 decays in the prompt J / ψ yield, F χ c → J / ψ = σ χ c → J / ψ / σ J / ψ , is measured by the LHCb detector in p Pb collisions at s NN = 8.16 TeV . The study covers the forward ( 1.5 < y * < 4.0 ) and backward ( − 5.0 < y * < − 2.5 ) rapidity regions, where y * is the J / ψ rapidity in the nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass system. Forward and backward rapidity samples correspond to integrated luminosities of 13.6 ± 0.3 and 20.8 ± 0.5 nb − 1 , respectively. The result is presented as a function of the J / ψ transverse momentum p T , J / ψ in the range 1 < p T , J / ψ < 20 GeV / c . The F χ c → J / ψ fraction at forward rapidity is compatible with the LHCb measurement performed in p p collisions at s = 7 TeV , whereas the result at backward rapidity is 2.4 σ larger than in the forward region for 1 < p T , J / ψ < 3 GeV / c . The increase of F χ c → J / ψ at low p T , J / ψ at backward rapidity is compatible with the suppression of the ψ ( 2 S ) contribution to the prompt J / ψ yield. The lack of in-medium dissociation of χ c states observed in this study sets an upper limit of 180 MeV on the free energy available in these p Pb collisions to dissociate or inhibit charmonium state formation. © 2024 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2024 CERN

We measure a branching fraction B = ( 1.53 ± 0.29 ± 0.17 ) × 10 − 6 , a fraction of longitudinal polarization f L = 0.87 ± 0.13 ± 0.13 , and a time-integrated C P asymmetry A C P = − 0.44 ± 0.43 ± 0.11 , where the first uncertainties listed are statistical and the second are systematic. This is the first observation of B 0 → ω ω and the first measurements of f L and A C P for this decay. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Studies of the Energy Dependence of Diboson Polarization Fractions and the Radiation-Amplitude-Zero Effect in WZ Production with the ATLAS Detector

This Letter presents the first study of the energy dependence of diboson polarization fractions in WZ → ℓνℓ'ℓ'(ℓ,ℓ'=e,μ) production. The dataset used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb -1 of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector. Two fiducial regions with an enhanced presence of events featuring two longitudinally polarized bosons are defined. A nonzero fraction of events with two longitudinally polarized bosons is measured with an observed significance of 5.3 standard deviations in the region with 100< $p$$^{Z}_{T}$ ≤ 200 GeV, and 1.6 standard deviations in the region with $p$$^{Z}_{T}$ > 200 GeV, where $p$$^{Z}_{T}$ is the transverse momentum of the Z boson. This Letter also reports the first study of the radiation-amplitude-zero effect. Events with two transversely polarized bosons are analyzed for the Δ Y (ℓ W Z ) and Δ Y ( WZ ) distributions defined respectively as the rapidity difference between the lepton from the W boson decay and the Z boson and the rapidity difference between the W boson and the Z boson. Significant suppression of events near zero is observed in both distributions. Unfolded Δ Y (ℓ W Z ) and Δ Y ( WZ ) distributions are also measured and compared to theoretical predictions.

Quark and Gluon Momentum Fractions in the Pion and in the Kaon

We present the full decomposition of the momentum fraction carried by quarks and gluons in the pion and the kaon. We employ three gauge ensembles generated with N f = 2 + 1 + 1 Wilson twisted-mass clover-improved fermions at the physical quark masses. For both mesons we perform a continuum extrapolation directly at the physical pion mass, which allows us to determine for the first time the momentum decomposition at the physical point. We find that the total momentum fraction carried by quarks is 0.575(79) and 0.683(50) and by gluons 0.402(53) and 0.422(67) in the pion and in the kaon, respectively, in the MS ¯ scheme and at the renormalization scale of 2 GeV. Having computed both the quark and gluon contributions in the continuum limit, we find that the momentum sum is 0.984(89) for the pion and 1.13(11) for the kaon, verifying the momentum sum rule. Excitons in fractionally filled moiré superlattices

Long-range Coulomb forces give rise to correlated insulating states when charge particles populate a moiré superlattice at certain fractional filling factors. Such behavior is characterized by a broken translation symmetry wherein particles spontaneously form a Wigner crystal. Here, focusing on the experimental findings of Xu et al. [Nature (London) 587, 214 (2020)], we present a theory that captures the correlated insulating state of a fractionally filled moiré superlattice through the energy shift and change in oscillator strength of the exciton absorption resonance. The theory shows that the experimental findings can only be supported if the electrons reside in a charge-ordered state (i.e., electrons are not randomly distributed among the sites of the moiré superlattice). Furthermore, we explain why the energy shifts of exciton resonances are qualitatively different in cases where the superlattice is nearly empty compared with a superlattice whose sites are doubly occupied.

X-ray free-electron laser wavefront sensing using the fractional Talbot effect

Wavefront sensing at X-ray free-electron lasers is important for quantitatively understanding the fundamental properties of the laser, for aligning X-ray instruments and for conducting scientific experimental analysis. A fractional Talbot wavefront sensor has been developed. This wavefront sensor enables measurements over a wide range of energies, as is common on X-ray instruments, with simplified mechanical requirements and is compatible with the high average power pulses expected in upcoming X-ray free-electron laser upgrades. Single-shot measurements were performed at 500 eV, 1000 eV and 1500 eV at the Linac Coherent Light Source. These measurements were applied to study both mirror alignment and the effects of undulator tapering schemes on source properties. The beamline focal plane position was tracked to an uncertainty of 0.12 mm, and the source location for various undulator tapering schemes to an uncertainty of 1m, demonstrating excellent sensitivity. These findings pave the way to use the fractional Talbot wavefront sensor as a routine, robust and sensitive tool at X-ray free-electron lasers as well as other high-brightness X-ray sources.

As above, not so below: Ion fractionation in planetary analog ices

The geophysical evolution and astrobiological potential of ocean worlds are indelibly linked to the chemical compositions of their oceans and ice shells. In the absence of direct measurements, empirical estimates of subsurface ocean compositions have relied on the assumption that the ionic compositions of ice shell surfaces are representative of their underlying ocean compositions. Here, we present experimental results demonstrating that ion fractionation—the differential entrainment of ion species in forming ices—is likely a prevalent process on ocean worlds, suggesting that planetary ice shell compositions do not directly reflect their underlying ocean compositions. We measure in-ice depletions and amplifications of relative ion concentrations ranging between −40 and +77%, compared to the parent fluid composition. Although this may complicate the interpretation of spacecraft data, ion fractionation provides a mechanism for generating compositionally diverse ices that could help explain the geological complexity of planetary ice shells.

Charm fragmentation fractions and $\mathbf {c\overline{c}}$ cross section in p–Pb collisions at $\mathbf {\sqrt{s _{NN}}=5.02 TeV}$

The total charm-quark production cross section per unit of rapidity dσ($\mathbf {c\overline{c}}$)/dy, and the fragmentation fractions of charm quarks to different charm-hadron species f(c → h c ), are measured for the first time in p–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV at midrapidity (–0.96 < y < 0.04 in the centre-of-mass frame) using data collected by ALICE at the CERN LHC. The results are obtained based on all the available measurements of prompt production of ground-state charm-hadron species: D 0 , D + , D$^{+}_{s}$, and J/ψ mesons, and Λ$^{+}_{c}$ and $Ξ$$^{0}_{c}$ baryons. The resulting cross section is dσ($\mathbf {c\overline{c}}$)/dy = 219.6 ± 6.3 (stat.) $^{+10.5}_{–11.8}$ (syst.) $^{+8.3}_{–2.9}$ (extr.) ± 5.4 (BR) ± 4.6 (lumi.) ± 19.5 (rapidity shape) + 15.0 (Ω$^{0}_{c}$) mb, which is consistent with a binary scaling of pQCD calculations from pp collisions. The measured fragmentation fractions are compatible with those measured in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 and 13 TeV, showing an increase in the relative production rates of charm baryons with respect to charm mesons in pp and p–Pb collisions compared with e + e – and e – p collisions. The p T -integrated nuclear modification factor of charm quarks, R pPb ($\mathbf {c\overline{c}}$) = 0.91 ± 0.04 (stat.) $^{+0.08}_{–0.09}$ (syst.) $^{+0.05}_{–0.03}$ (extr.) ± 0.03 (lumi.), is found to be consistent with unity and with theoretical predictions including nuclear modifications of the parton distribution functions.
