Short-Range Crystalline Order-Tuned Conductivity in Cr 2 Si 2 Te 6 van der Waals Magnetic Crystals

Two-dimensional magnetic materials (2DMMs) are significant not only for studies on the nature of 2D long-range magnetic order but also for future spintronic devices. Of particular interest are 2DMMs where spins can be manipulated by electrical conduction. Whereas Cr 2 Si 2 Te 6 exhibits magnetic order in few-layer crystals, its large band gap inhibits electronic conduction. Here we show that the defect-induced short-range crystal order in Cr 2 Si 2 Te 6 , on the length scale below 0.6 nm, induces a substantially reduced band gap and robust semiconducting behavior down to 2 K that turns to metallic above 10 GPa. Our results in this work will be helpful in designing conducting states in 2DMMs and call for spin-resolved measurement of the electronic structure in exfoliated ultrathin crystals.

Downscaling of Non-Van der Waals Semimetallic W 5 N 6 with Resistivity Preservation

The bulk phase of transition metal nitrides (TMNs) has long been a subject of extensive investigation due to their utility as coating materials, electrocatalysts, and diffusion barriers, attributed to their high conductivity and refractory properties. Downscaling TMNs into two-dimensional (2D) forms would provide valuable members to the existing 2D materials repertoire, with potential enhancements across various applications. Moreover, calculations have anticipated the emergence of uncommon physical phenomena in TMNs at the 2D limit. Here, in this study, we use the atomic substitution approach to synthesize 2D W 5 N 6 with tunable thicknesses from tens of nanometers down to 2.9 nm. The obtained flakes exhibit high crystallinity and smooth surfaces. Electrical measurements on 15 samples show an average electrical conductivity of 161.1 S/cm, which persists while thickness decreases from 45.6 to 2.9 nm. The observed weak gate-tuning effect suggests the semimetallic nature of the synthesized 2D W 5 N 6 . Further investigation of the conversion mechanism elucidates the crucial role of chalcogen vacancies in the precursor for initiating the reaction and strain in propagating the conversion. Our work introduces a desired semimetallic crystal to the 2D material library with mechanistic insights for future design of the synthesis.

Excitons in van der Waals magnetic materials

Two-dimensional magnetic semiconductors provide a unique platform where long-range magnetic order coexists with strongly bound excitons. Because excitonic states and magnetic moments originate from the same electronic orbitals and couple via intrinsic exchange interactions, optical excitations in these systems exhibit pronounced sensitivity to magnetic order. Recent experiments show unusually strong magneto-optical responses and direct exciton–magnon coupling, establishing new routes for controlling light–matter interactions with spin degrees of freedom. Here, this Review surveys key developments, focusing on representative material systems, experimental signatures, and theoretical frameworks used to describe these phenomena. We conclude with perspectives on how this rapidly evolving field could enable next-generation optoelectronic and quantum technologies leveraging the coupled dynamics of light, charge and spin.

Single photon emitters in van der Waals solids for quantum photonics: materials, theory and molecular-scale characterization probes

Strong light–matter interactions in two-dimensional layered materials (2D materials) have attracted the interest of researchers from interdisciplinary fields for more than a decade now. A unique phenomenon in some 2D materials is their large exciton binding energies (BEs), increasing the likelihood of exciton survival at room temperature. It is this large BE that mediates the intense light–matter interactions of many of the 2D materials, particularly in their monolayer limit, where the interplay of excitonic phenomena poses a wealth of opportunities for high-performance optoelectronics and quantum photonics. Within quantum photonics, quantum information science (QIS) is growing rapidly, where photons are a promising platform for information processing due to their low-noise properties, excellent modal control, and long-distance propagation. A central element for QIS applications is a single photon emitter (SPE) source, where an ideal on-demand SPE emits exactly one photon at a time into a given spatiotemporal mode. Recently, 2D materials have shown practical appeal for QIS which is directly driven from their unique layered crystalline structure. This structural attribute of 2D materials facilitates their integration with optical elements more easily than the SPEs in conventional three-dimensional solid state materials, such as diamond and SiC. In this review article, we will discuss recent advances made with 2D materials towards their use as quantum emitters, where the SPE emission properties maybe modulated deterministically. Here, the use of unique scanning tunneling microscopy tools for the in-situ generation and characterization of defects is presented, along with theoretical first-principles frameworks and machine learning approaches to model the structure-property relationship of exciton–defect interactions within the lattice towards SPEs. Given the rapid progress made in this area, the SPEs in 2D materials are emerging as promising sources of nonclassical light emitters, well-poised to advance quantum photonics in the future.

Parameter-free treatment of a layered correlated van der Waals magnet: CrPS 4

The electronic and magnetic structure of CrPS 4 , a two-dimensional (2D) magnetic semiconductor is examined by employing the SCAN meta-GGA density functional. We find the resulting magnetic moment and band gap are in excellent agreement with experiment. From the bulk magnetic configurations, we confirm the experimentally observed A-type antiferromagnetic (A-AFM) ordered ground state with a magnetic moment of 2.78 µ B per chromium atom and band gap of 1.34 eV. To gain insight into the evolution of the ground state with layers, the total energy of each magnetic configuration is calculated for a variety of thicknesses. Monolayer CrPS 4 is predicted to be a ferromagnetic insulator with a band gap of 1.37 eV, and A-AFM for bilayer and trilayer, with band gaps of 1.35 and 1.30 eV, respectively. The electronic structure is reported for the single-, two-, and three-layer and bulk CrPS 4 . Finally, we explore the optical properties of the 2D structure and report the dielectric tensor components and Kerr parameters for the monolayer.

Power-to-Gas Systems for Active Load Management at EV Charging Sites with High DER Penetration

Intermittent renewable systems and increasing electric vehicle (EV) penetrations increase load intermittency—and will require expensive distribution system infrastructure upgrades. Power-to-gas (P2G) systems are highly controllable loads that can be modulated to regulate the net load behind the meter. In this work, we present an active load management approach using P2G systems to regulate the net load for an EV charging station with high penetrations of renewable generation. The system also validates the feasibility of the proposed approach using a 750-kW electrolyzer operated with the distribution system in a real-time power-hardware-in-the-loop test. Finally, we evaluate the impact of the size of the P2G system on its ability to regulate the net load.

Distributed Grid Control of Flexible Loads and DERs for Optimized Provision of Synthetic Regulating Reserves

Over the course of this project, we have successfully de-risked our distributed microgrid control architecture by tightly integrating its associated control algorithms into a unified software library, installing the software library on several industrial-grade target hardware platforms, and validating the performance of the resulting microgrid controller in a real-life microgrid. Upon completion of the project, we demonstrated that our distributed control architecture is resilient against (i) failures in control devices, (ii) unreliable communication links, (iii) delays in transmitted data, and (iv) imperfect knowledge of the number of (and state of) generation and load assets in the microgrid. In this final report, we present results from all the milestones that were accomplished over the course of this project.
