Multidimensional coherent spectroscopy of light-driven states and their collective modes in multiband superconductors

We present a comprehensive theory of light-controlled multiband superconductivity, and apply it to predict distinctive signatures of light-driven superconducting (SC) states in terahertz multidimensional coherent spectroscopy (THz-MDCS) experiments. We first derive gauge-invariant Maxwell-Bloch equations for multiband BCS superconductors with spatial fluctuations. We consider driving electromagnetic fields determined self-consistently by Maxwell's equations. By calculating the THz-MDCS spectra measured experimentally in the clean SC limit, we identify unique signatures of finite-momentum Cooper-pairing states that live longer than the laser pulse. They are controlled by a pair of THz laser pulses with well-defined relative phase (pulse pair). The pseudospin oscillators that describe the properties of these SC states are parametrically driven by both finite-momentum Cooper pairing and by time oscillations of the order-parameter relative phase. We show that such strong parametric driving leads to drastic changes in the THz-MDCS spectral shape from the predictions of third-order nonlinear susceptibility calculations. These spectral changes strongly depend on the interband-to-intraband interaction ratio and on the collective modes of the light-driven state. For negligible interband interaction, the spectra show a transition with increasing field, from traditional pump-probe, four-wave-mixing, and third-harmonic generation peaks determined by the laser frequency to sidebands determined by the excitations of the driven system. These sidebands emerge from difference-frequency Raman processes in the nonequilibrium SC state. For interband couplings weaker than the intraband pairing, we show that the Leggett phase collective mode leads to harmonic sidebands around the traditional pump-probe peaks. Additional Higgs collective mode peaks result from light-induced inversion-symmetry breaking in a thin-film geometry. For strong interband coupling, we find a transition from a nonequilibrium finite Cooper-pair momentum state characterized by hybrid-Higgs amplitude mode peaks in THz-MDCS spectra to a driven state identified experimentally by the emergence of Floquet-type sidebands at bi-Higgs frequencies. Those dominant bi-Higgs-frequency satellites are manifestations of a new order parameter relative phase collective mode that characterizes the nonequilibrium SC state. The predicted interaction- and field-dependent transitions in the spectral profile allow us to propose THz-MDCS experiments for quantum tomography of light-driven superconductivity.

Magnetic field induced partially polarized chiral spin liquid in a transition metal dichalcogenide moiré system

As one of the most intriguing states of matter, the chiral spin liquid (CSL) has attracted much scientific interest while its existence and mechanism in crystalline strongly correlated systems remain hotly debated. On the other hand, strong correlation driven emergent phenomena can be realized in twisted transition metal dichalcogenide bilayers with a tremendously tunable large length scale providing a new platform for the emergence of CSLs. Here, we focus on a strongly correlated model relevant to heterobilayer WSe 2 /MoSe 2 and investigate the Mott insulating phase at half filling under an out-of-plane magnetic field. Considering both its orbital and spin Zeeman effects we identify three conventionally ordered phases including a 120° Néel phase, a stripe phase, and an up-up-down phase. For intermediate fields an emergent quantum spin liquid phase is identified with partial spin polarization. We further characterize its topological nature as the v = 1/2 Laughlin CSL through the topological entanglement spectrum and quantized spin pumping under spin flux insertion. In addition, we map out the quantum phase diagram for different twisted angles in an experimentally accessible parameter regime.

Spatiotemporal quenches for efficient critical ground state preparation in the two-dimensional transverse field Ising model

Quantum simulators have the potential to shed light on the study of quantum many-body systems and materials, offering unique insights into various quantum phenomena. Although adiabatic evolution has been conventionally employed for state preparation, it faces challenges when the system evolves too quickly or the coherence time is limited. In such cases, shortcuts to adiabaticity, such as spatiotemporal quenches, provide a promising alternative. This paper numerically investigates the application of spatiotemporal quenches in the two-dimensional transverse field Ising model with ferromagnetic interactions, focusing on the emergence of the ground state and its correlation properties at criticality when the gap vanishes. We demonstrate the effectiveness of these quenches in rapidly preparing ground states in critical systems. Our simulations reveal the existence of an optimal quench front velocity at the emergent speed of light, leading to minimal excitation energy density and correlation lengths of the order of finite system sizes we can simulate. These findings emphasize the potential of spatiotemporal quenches for efficient ground state preparation in quantum systems, with implications for the exploration of strongly correlated phases and programmable quantum computing.

Two-fermion negativity and confinement in the Schwinger model

We consider the fermionic (logarithmic) negativity between two fermionic modes in the Schwinger model. Recent results pointed out that fermionic systems can exhibit stronger entanglement than bosonic systems, exhibiting a negativity that decays only algebraically. The Schwinger model is described by fermionic excitations at short distances, while its asymptotic spectrum is the one of a bosonic theory. We show that the two-mode negativity detects this confining, fermion-to-boson transition, shifting from an algebraic decay to an exponential decay at distances of the order of the de Broglie wavelength of the first excited state. We derive analytical expressions in the massless Schwinger model and confront them with tensor network simulations. We also perform tensor network simulations in the massive model, which is not solvable analytically, and close to the Ising quantum critical point of the Schwinger model, where we show that the negativity behaves as its bosonic counterpart. Mass gaps of a Z 3 gauge theory with three fermion flavors in 1 + 1 dimensions

We consider a Z 3 gauge theory coupled to three degenerate massive flavors of fermions, which we term Quantum Z(3) Dynamics, QZD. The spectrum can be computed in 1 + 1 dimensions using tensor networks. In weak coupling the spectrum is that of the expected mesons and baryons, although the corrections in weak coupling are nontrivial, analogous to those of nonrelativistic QED in 1 + 1 dimensions. In strong coupling, besides the usual baryon, the singlet meson is a baryon-antibaryon state. For two special values of the coupling constant, the lightest baryon is degenerate with the lightest octet meson, and the lightest singlet meson, respectively. Recovery of Damaged Information and the Out-of-Time-Ordered Correlators

The evolution with a complex Hamiltonian generally leads to information scrambling. A time-reversed dynamics unwinds this scrambling and thus leads to the original information recovery. In this work, we show that if the scrambled information is, in addition, partially damaged by a local measurement, then such a damage can still be treated by application of the time-reversed protocol. This information recovery is described by the long-time saturation value of a certain out-of-time-ordered correlator of local variables. We also propose a simple test that distinguishes between quantum and reversible classical chaotic information scrambling.

Topological Superconductivity in the Doped Chiral Spin Liquid on the Triangular Lattice

It has been established that the undoped, i.e., δ = 0 , system has a CSL ground state in the parameter region 0.32 ≤ J χ / J ≤ 0.56 . Upon light doping, we find that the ground state of the system is consistent with a Luther-Emery liquid with power-law superconducting and charge-density-wave correlations but short-range spin-spin correlations. In particular, the superconducting correlations, whose pairing symmetry is consistent with d ± i d wave, are dominant at all hole doping concentrations. Overall, our results provide direct evidences that doping the CSL on the triangular lattice can naturally give rise to topological superconductivity.

Bypassing the Energy Functional in Density Functional Theory: Direct Calculation of Electronic Energies from Conditional Probability Densities

Density functional calculations can fail for want of an accurate exchange-correlation approximation. The energy can instead be extracted from a sequence of density functional calculations of conditional probabilities (CP DFT). Simple CP approximations yield usefully accurate results for two-electron ions, the hydrogen dimer, and the uniform gas at all temperatures. CP DFT has no self-interaction error for one electron, and correctly dissociates H2, both major challenges. For warm dense matter, classical CP DFT calculations can overcome the convergence problems of Kohn-Sham DFT.

Origin of Insulating Ferromagnetism in Iron Oxychalcogenide Ce 2 O 2 FeSe 2

An insulating ferromagnetic (FM) phase exists in the quasi-one-dimensional iron oxychalcogenide Ce 2 O 2 FeSe 2 , but its origin is unknown. To understand the FM mechanism, here a systematic investigation of this material is provided, analyzing the competition between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic tendencies and the interplay of hoppings, Coulomb interactions, Hund’s coupling, and crystal-field splittings. Overall, our intuitive analysis based on second-order perturbation theory shows that large entanglements between doubly occupied and half filled orbitals play a key role in stabilizing the FM order in Ce 2 O 2 FeSe 2 . In addition, via many-body computational techniques applied to a multiorbital Hubbard model, the phase diagram confirms the proposed FM mechanism.

Universal Kardar-Parisi-Zhang Dynamics in Integrable Quantum Systems

Although the Bethe ansatz solution of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg model dates back nearly a century, the anomalous nature of its high-temperature transport dynamics has only recently been uncovered. Indeed, numerical and experimental observations have demonstrated that spin transport in this paradigmatic model falls into the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class. This has inspired the significantly stronger conjecture that KPZ dynamics, in fact, occur in all integrable spin chains with non-Abelian symmetry. Here, in this letter, we provide extensive numerical evidence affirming this conjecture. Moreover, we observe that KPZ transport is even more generic, arising in both supersymmetric and periodically driven models. Motivated by recent advances in the realization of SU(N)-symmetric spin models in alkaline-earth-based optical lattice experiments, we propose and analyze a protocol to directly investigate the KPZ scaling function in such systems.

Witnessing Nonequilibrium Entanglement Dynamics in a Strongly Correlated Fermionic Chain

Many-body entanglement in condensed matter systems can be diagnosed from equilibrium response functions through the use of entanglement witnesses and operator-specific quantum bounds. Here, we investigate the applicability of this approach for detecting entangled states in quantum systems driven out of equilibrium. We use a multipartite entanglement witness, the quantum Fisher information, to study the dynamics of a paradigmatic fermion chain undergoing a time-dependent change of the Coulomb interaction. Our results show that the quantum Fisher information is able to witness distinct signatures of multipartite entanglement both near and far from equilibrium that are robust against decoherence. Here, we discuss implications of these findings for probing entanglement in light-driven quantum materials with time-resolved optical and x-ray scattering methods.

Extracting Higher Central Charge from a Single Wave Function

A (2+1)D topologically ordered phase may or may not have a gappable edge, even if its chiral central charge c_ is vanishing. Recently, it was discovered that a quantity regarded as a "higher" version of chiral central charge gives a further obstruction beyond c_ to gapping out the edge. Here, in this Letter, we show that the higher central charges can be characterized by the expectation value of the partial rotation operator acting on the wave function of the topologically ordered state. This allows us to extract the higher central charge from a single wave function, which can be evaluated on a quantum computer. Our characterization of the higher central charge is analytically derived from the modular properties of edge conformal field theory, as well as the numerical results with the ν = 1/2 bosonic Laughlin state and the non-Abelian gapped phase of the Kitaev honeycomb model, which corresponds to U(1) 2 and Ising topological order, respectively. The Letter establishes a numerical method to obtain a set of obstructions to the gappable edge of (2+1)D bosonic topological order beyond c_, which enables us to completely determine if a (2+1)D bosonic Abelian topological order has a gappable edge or not. We also point out that the expectation values of the partial rotation on a single wave function put a constraint on the low-energy spectrum of the bulk-boundary system of (2+1)D bosonic topological order, reminiscent of the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis-type theorems.
