Calculations and curve fits of thermodynamic and transport properties for equilibrium air to 30000 K

A self-consistent set of equilibrium air values were computed for enthalpy, total specific heat at constant pressure, compressibility factor, viscosity, total thermal conductivity, and total Prandtl number from 500 to 30,000 K over a range of 10(exp -4) atm to 10(exp 2) atm. The mixture values are calculated from the transport and thermodynamic properties of the individual species provided in a recent study by the authors. The concentrations of the individual species, required in the mixture relations, are obtained from a free energy minimization calculation procedure. Present calculations are based on an 11-species air model. For pressures less than 10(exp -2) atm and temperatures of about 15,000 K and greater, the concentrations of N(++) and O(++) become important, and consequently, they are included in the calculations determining the various properties. The computed properties are curve fitted as a function of temperature at a constant value of pressure. These curve fits reproduce the computed values within 5 percent for the entire temperature range considered here at specific pressures and provide an efficient means for computing the flowfield properties of equilibrium air, provided the elemental composition remains constant at 0.24 for oxygen and 0.76 for nitrogen by mass.

Regular variability of the shape of the primary minimum of the orbital light curve of SS 433 with the phase of the precessional period

The regular variations of the shape of the primary minimum of the orbital 13.082-day light curve of SS 433 with the phase of the 162.5-day processional period were discovered by analysis of the photometrical databank. The regular variability of the shape of the primary minimum of the discovered light curve of SS 433 reflects displacement with the 26-day double orbital period of at least two hot bright spots on the surface of the processional accretional disk and their eclipse by a normal star. Other aspects of the investigation are further discussed.

A weakly nonlinear theory for wave-vortex interactions in curved channel flow

A weakly nonlinear theory is developed to study the interaction of Tollmien-Schlichting (TS) waves and Dean vortices in curved channel flow. The predictions obtained from the theory agree well with results obtained from direct numerical simulations of curved channel flow, especially for low amplitude disturbances. Some discrepancies in the results of a previous theory with direct numerical simulations are resolved.

A curved beam test specimen for determining the interlaminar tensile strength of a laminated composite

A curved beam type of test specimen is evaluated for use in determining the through-the-thickness strength of laminated composites. Two variations of a curved beam specimen configuration (semi-circular and elliptical) were tested to failure using static and fatigue loads. The static failure load for the semi-circular specimens was found to be highly sensitive to flaw content, with the specimens falling into two distinct groups. This result supports the use of proof testing for structural validation. Static design allowables are derived based on the Weibull distribution. Fatigue data indicates no measured increase in specimen compliance prior to final fracture. All static and fatigue failures at room temperature dry conditions occurred catastrophically. The elliptical specimens demonstrated unusually high failure strengths indicating the presence of phenomena requiring further study. Results are also included for specimens exposed to a wet environment showing a matrix strength degradation due to moisture content. Further testing is under way to evaluate a fatigue methodology for matrix dominated failures based on residual static strength (wearout).

Light curves of rotating, oscillating neutron stars

A technique has been developed for computing the light curve produced by a rotating, oscillating neutron star that emits radiation from circular polar cap regions, as are thought to exist in pulsars, X-ray binaries, and perhaps X-ray bursters. Several examples of light curves produced by single, low-order (l = 1, 2) oscillation modes are given. A Gaussian beaming function is used to simulate typical radio pulsar beam widths in order to investigate a neutron star oscillation model for subpulse drift in pulsars. X-ray bursts and X-ray pulsars have also been simulated to assess the possibility of detecting such oscillations in these sources with XTE and AXAF.

Strength, toughness and R-curve behaviour of SiC whisker-reinforced composite Si3N4 with reference to monolithic Si3N4

The flexural strength and fracture toughness of 30 vol pct SiC whisker-reinforced Si3N4 material were determined as a function of temperature from 25 to 1400 C in an air environment. It was found that both strength and toughness of the composite material were almost the same as those of the monolithic counterpart. The room-temperature strength was retained up to 1100 C; however, appreciable strength degradation started at 1200 C and reached a maximum at 1400 C due to stable crack growth. In contrast, the fracture toughness of the two materials was independent of temperature with an average value of 5.66 MPa sq rt m. It was also observed that the composite material exhibited no rising R-curve behavior at room temperature, as was the case for the monolithic material. These results indicate that SiC whisker addition to the Si3N4 matrix did not provide any favorable effects on strength, toughness and R-curve behavior.

Analysis of delamination onset and growth in curved laminates

Delamination onset and growth from a matrix crack in a curved composite laminate are studied. Finite element analysis is used to determine values of G which can be compared to the interlaminar fracture toughness of the composite for delamination predictions. The delamination is assumed to grow from the matrix crack and to remain straight and perpendicular to the edge. G is larger at the free edge than in the center and increases with delamination growth. Thus, once delamination begins from the matrix crack it should continue around the curved section with no increase in applied load. In the local vicinity of the matrix crack the rate of change of G decreases initially and then begins to increase with a point of inflection in between. Measured failure loads and the interlaminar fracture toughness of the composite are used to show that the point of inflection corresponds to the critical value of G.

Behavior of asymmetric unstable modes of a trailing line vortex near the upper neutral curve

The linear stability of a trailing line vortex subjected to disturbances having azimuthal wave number n = -1 is considered. In the limit of large Reynolds numbers, the corresponding inviscid solution for this wave number is obtained. It is found that near the upper neutral curve, there exists mode crossing and mode switching between the primary and secondary modes. It is also found that viscous forces have both stabilizing and destabilizing effects on inviscid modes, which result in the appearance of a second peak in the growth rate curves.

Tracing the efficient curve for multi-objective control-structure optimization

A recently developed active set algorithm for tracing parameterized optima is adapted to multiobjective optimization. The algorithm traces a path of Kuhn-Tucker points using homotopy curve tracking techniques, and is based on identifying and maintaining the set of active constraints. Second order necessary optimality conditions are used to determine nonoptimal stationary points on the path. In the bi-objective optimization case the algorithm is used to trace the curve of efficient solution (Pareto optima). As an example, the algorithm is applied to the simultaneous minimization of the weight and control force of a ten-bar truss with two collocated sensors and actuators, with some interesting results.

Microlensed light curves for thin accretion disks around Schwarzschild and Kerr black holes

Surface brightness maps for thin accretion disks around Schwarzschild and Kerr black holes are presented. These disks are a few times smaller than those used by Rauch and Blandford (1991), and some of the present models are slightly less luminous than theirs. Example of microlensed light curves are calculated by convolving these accretion disk maps with the magnification patterns obtained from microlensing calculations. The light curves exhibit eventlike variations with amplitudes and time scales comparable to those observed in QSO 2237 + 0305. It is concluded that thin thermal accretion disk models are not in contradiction with the observed microlens-induced variations of QSO 2237 + 0305.

Manual flying of curved precision approaches to landing with electromechanical instrumentation. A piloted simulation study

A piloted simulation study was conducted to examine the requirements for using electromechanical flight instrumentation to provide situation information and flight guidance for manually controlled flight along curved precision approach paths to a landing. Six pilots were used as test subjects. The data from these tests indicated that flight director guidance is required for the manually controlled flight of a jet transport airplane on curved approach paths. Acceptable path tracking performance was attained with each of the three situation information algorithms tested. Approach paths with both multiple sequential turns and short final path segments were evaluated. Pilot comments indicated that all the approach paths tested could be used in normal airline operations.

Light curve and fan-shaped coma of comet P/Tempel 2 in 1988-1989

Visual and Photographic Monitoring observations of comet P/Tempel 2 were carried out by a Japanese amateur group 'Hoshi-no-Hiroba' in 1988-1989. We analyzed the light curve and the time variation of the fan-shaped coma. The light curve was asymmetric to the perihelion passage. The fan angle in September-October was wider than that in December. The direction of the fan generally coincided with Sekanina's prediction (1988).

Declining rotation curves in interacting galaxies

A declining rotation curve was recently found for the galaxy NGC 3521 by HI synthesis telescope observations (Casertano and van Gorkom 1991). From a comparison of the shapes of rotation curves for a larger sample of galaxies Casertano and van Gorkom argue that this is due to initial properties during the phase of galaxy formation. In several studies of global properties of galaxies, NGC 3521 was always considered a 'normal' unbarred, non-interacting, isolated spiral. However, we present CCD surface photometry that shows at low surface brightness levels the typical signs of interaction or even merging.

Combined forced and free convection in a curved duct

The purpose of this study is to investigate the flow and heat transfer characteristics of a combined forced and free convection flow in a curved duct. Solutions are obtained by solving the low Mach number model of the Navier-Stokes equation using a control volume method. The finite-volume method was developed with the use of a predictor-corrector numerical scheme and some new variations of the classical projection method. Solutions indicated that the existence of a buoyancy force has changed the entire flow structure inside a curved duct. Reversed flow at both inner and outer bend is observed. For moderate Reynolds number, the upstream section of the duct was significantly influenced by the free convection processes. In general, heat transfer is strong at the inner bend of the beginning of the heated section and at the outer bend on the last half of the heated section. The maximum velocity location is strongly influenced by the combined effects of buoyancy and centrifugal forces. A strong buoyancy force can reduce the strength of the secondary flow where it plays an important role in mixing.

The anomalous extinction curve in the direction of Rho Ophiuchi from 950 to 1180 A

We report the interstellar extinction from 950 to 1180 A in the direction of Rho Oph. These data were obtained with a moderate-resolution sounding rocket observation of Ro Oph, and two lightly reddened B stars of identical spectral type. Unlike Voyager observations in this wavelength region, our spectral resolution is sufficient to directly measure the contribution of molecular hydrogen along the line of sight and unambiguously identify the dust contribution. The derived curves compare favorably with the extrapolation of functional fits to the Rho Oph derived from longer wavelengths. In addition, we have fitted a model of dust extinction to the derived curve and find that the best fits indicate that the line of sight exhibits a larger than average grain size and a preferential concentration of graphite relative to silicates. The sharp rise seen at the shortest wavelengths (below 1000 A) cannot be explained by standard silicate-graphite dust models and may be indicative of a nonstandard grain shape or a missing component in the extinction models.
