Ocean color measurement from high altitude

Investigations into the feasibility of sensing ocean color from high altitude for determination of chlorophyll and sediment distributions have been carried out using sensors on NASA aircraft, coordinated with surface measurements carried out by oceanographic vessels. Spectrometer measurements in 1971 and 1972 led to development of an imaging sensor now flying on a NASA U-2 and the Coastal Zone Color Scanner to fly on Nimbus G in 1978. Results of the U-2 effort have shown the imaging sensor to also be of great value in sensing pollutants in the ocean.

The V - /2.2 micron/ colors of elliptical galaxies

Infrared photometric measurements of 19 normal and giant elliptical galaxies are reported which were made with apertures having diameters 0.1 to 1.3 times the visual galactic diameters. The derived V (2.2 micron) colors, ranging from 3.15 to 3.60 magnitudes, are compared with the results of Grasdalen (1975) for 28 spiral and elliptical galaxies. All but one of the present magnitudes are found to be systematically brighter than Grasdalen's by 0.07 to 0.46 magnitude, and no significant radial color gradient is observed.

Ocean color spectra measured off the Oregon coast - Characteristic vectors

The ocean color spectrum is defined as the ratio of the spectrum of light upwelled from the sea to the spectrum of light incident on the sea surface. Ocean color spectra, observed from an airplane flown over waters off Oregon, are analyzed. The original spectra are resolved into fifty-five wavelength bands, each 5 nm wide. The shapes of these spectra are parameterized by, and shown to be accurately recoverable from, their first four principal components. These components are the scalar projections of each spectrum on the first four characteristic vectors of the sample covariance matrix. Regression equations are found with which phytoplankton pigment concentration and water transparency may be estimated as linear functions of the principal components. Pigment concentration estimates thus obtained are imprecise. The poor fit is at least partly due to the inappropriateness of the linear regression model and the neglect of other optically important substances typically present in sea water.

The use of hand-held 35 mm color infrared imagery for estimates of suspended solids - A progress report

A cost-effective aerial surveillance technique is proposed for detection and identification of suspended solids which would be operational for both governmental monitoring organizations and private individuals operating catfish farms. Sixteen catfish ponds were flown daily for seven days using two hand-held 35 mm cameras with both Kodachrome X and Ektachrome infrared film. Hue, value, and chroma designations were recorded for each pond on each date by three interpreters, and the accepted color was that recorded by at least two of the interpreters, or if there was a three hue range, the median was accepted. Relations between suspended solids and color designations were analyzed graphically, and chroma was discarded due to an apparent lack of correlation. The data obtained were then analyzed by multiple regression. Significant correlations were revealed between hue and value and total and inorganic suspended solids. If perfected, this technique could be developed to sufficent accuracy for large-scale reconnaissance surveys to monitor the quality of rivers and streams.

Computer-generated, calligraphic, full-spectrum color system for visual simulation landing approach maneuvers

The calligraphic chromatic projector described was developed to improve the perceived realism of visual scene simulation ('out-the-window visuals'). The optical arrangement of the projector is illustrated and discussed. The device permits drawing 2000 vectors in as many as 500 colors, all above critical flicker frequencies, and use of high scene resolution and brightness at an acceptable level to the pilot, with the maximum system capabilities of 1000 lines and 1000 fL. The device for generating the colors is discussed, along with an experiment conducted to demonstrate potential improvements in performance and pilot opinion. Current research work and future research plans are noted.

Diazo Printing of ERTS Color Composites

The author has identified the following significant results. ERTS-1 color composites were made with the help of a Diazo developer and printer. Five single channel, density standards were established, using typical ERTS images, in order to determine exposure time. These standards were used to develop a graph from which the exposure time for any transparency can be estimated. Exposure times varied from 3 to 30 minutes, and clear colored polyester sheets from two manufactures were used with slightly different, but equally successful, results.

The meaning of desert color in earth orbital photographs

The color of desert surfaces as seen in earth orbital photographs is indicative of soil composition. Apollo-Soyuz photographs of the Sturt and Simpson Deserts of Australia confirm that sand grains become redder as the distance from the source increases. Reddening is caused by a thin iron-oxide coating on individual sand grains and can be used, in some cases, to map relative-age zones. Photographs of the Western (Libyan) Desert of Egypt indicate three distinct and nearly parallel color zones that have been correlated in the field with: (1) arable soil composed of quartz, clay, and calcium carbonate particles; (2) relatively active sand with or without sparse vegetation; and (3) relatively inactive sand mixed with dark (desert-varnished) pebbles. The youngest sands are in the form of longitudinal dunes, which are migrating to the south-southeast along the prevailing wind direction. Some of the young dune fields are encroaching on the western boundary of the fertile Nile Valley.

Five-color photometry of Saturn and its rings

Analysis of 206 high-quality plates from three recent apparitions taken in five colors has yielded several photometric parameters for Saturn and its A and B rings. Phase curves and geometric albedos are derived for two regions on Saturn and for each ring. The phase coefficients of the rings are found to be independent of the ring-plane inclination angle. A comparison of the phase curves shows that the particles of ring A exhibit a larger phase coefficient than do those of ring B. When examined with a multiple-scattering model using Henyey-Greenstein phase functions, the observations of the ring tilt effect indicate that the particles of ring A may also have lower single-scattering and geometric albedos. The color dependence of the geometric albedo of the particles in ring B is shown to be very similar to that of Europa (J II). Optical thicknesses of 0.50 for ring A and 0.018 for the Cassini division are found.

Characteristic vector analysis as a technique for signature extraction of remote ocean color data

Characteristic vector analysis is being used to extract spectral signatures of suspended matter in the ocean from remote ocean color data collected with MOCS (Multichannel Ocean Color Sensor), a multispectral scanner. Spectral signatures appear to be obtainable either directly from characteristic vectors or through a transformation of these eigenvectors. Quantification of the suspended matter associated with each resulting signature seems feasible using associated coefficients generated by the technique. This paper presents eigenvectors associated with algae, 'sediment', acid waste, sewage sludge, and oil. The results suggest an efficient method of transmitting from satellites multispectral data of pollution in our oceans.

Infrared colors and the diffuse interstellar bands

Broad-band infrared photometric measurements have been gathered for 105 stars which exhibit diffuse interstellar bands in their spectra. All normal stars obey a single reddening law, and a value of R equal to 3.08 + or - 0.15 is derived. This value is consistent with other recent determinations of R. The diffuse band indicators, the central depth of the 4430-A feature and the equivalent widths of the 5780-A and 6284-A features, show as large a scatter with the infrared color excesses as they do with E(B - V). No single-valued relation between the color excesses and the diffuse band strengths appears to exist. This casts doubt on whether dust grains which produce the visual and infrared extinctions are the carriers for the diffuse interstellar features.

Interactive color display for multispectral imagery using correlation clustering

A method for processing multispectral data is provided, which permits an operator to make parameter level changes during the processing of the data. The system is directed to production of a color classification map on a video display in which a given color represents a localized region in multispectral feature space. Interactive controls permit an operator to alter the size and change the location of these regions, permitting the classification of such region to be changed from a broad to a narrow classification.

The influence of false color infrared display on training field identification

The overall success of large-scale crop inventories of agricultural regions using Landsat multispectral scanner data is highly dependent upon the labeling of training data by analyst/photointerpreters. The principal analyst tool in labeling training data is a false color infrared composite of Landsat bands 4, 5, and 7. In this paper, this color display is investigated and its influence upon classification errors is partially determined.

International planetary patrol observations of Saturn's rings. II - Four color phase curves and their analysis

New phase curves for Saturn's rings at an intermediate tilt angle B of about 17 deg are presented. Quantitative results for each of the A and B rings are reported in terms of the opposition effect, phase coefficient, and best logarithmic fit to the phase curve. There was no significant difference between the shape of the phase curves for the two rings in each of the four colors, and a four-parameter multiple scattering model of the rings was consistent with the observations. In this model, the difference in the phase curves for different colors can be explained by a variation in the single scattering albedo with wavelength. The observations allow the particles to have the same composition in the A and B rings, so that their different photometric behavior is explained by differences in optical depth and volume density in the two rings.
