Asymptotic form of the charge exchange cross section in the three body rearrangement collisions

A three body general rearrangement collision is considered where the initial and final bound states are described by the hydrogen-like wave functions. Mathematical models are developed to establish the relationships of quantum number, the reduced mass, and the nuclear charge of the final state. It is shown that for the low lying levels, the reciprocal of n cubed scaling law at all incident energies is only approximately satisfied. The case of the symmetric collisions is considered and it is shown that for high n and high incident energy, E, the cross section behaves as the reciprocal of E cubed. Zeros and minima in the differential cross sections in the limit of high n for protons on atomic hydrogen and positrons on atomic hydrogen are given.

Scaling of cross sections for K-electron capture by high-energy protons and alpha-particles from the multielectron atoms

Electron capture by protons from H, He, and the K shell of Ar, and electron capture by alpha particles from He are considered. Using the experimental data, a function of the capture cross section is formed. It is shown that when this function is plotted versus the inverse of the collision energies, at high energies a straight line is obtained. At lower energies the line is concave up or down, depending on the charge of the projectile and/or the effective charge and the ionization potential of the electron that is being captured. The plot can be used to predict cross sections where experimental data are not available, and as a guide in future experiments. High-energy scaling formulas for K-electron capture by low-charge projectiles are given.

Dissociative and double photoionization cross sections of NO from threshold to 120 A

The partial photoionization cross sections for producing the NO(+) parent ion and the O(+), N(+), and NO2(+) fragment ions from neutral NO are presented from 120 to 614 A. The results indicate predissociation of the c(sup3) pi (21.72 eV) and B prime (sup 1) sigma (+) (22.73 eV) electronic states of NO(+). The photoionization threshold for double ionization was found to be 39.4 + or 0.12 eV.

On the use of the cross section concept as applied to pulsed CO2 laser dynamics

The 'cross sections' which are commonly used in combination with the molecular vibrational level densities to describe induced transition rates are time dependent in a pulsed discharge. This greatly affects the relative rates of buildup of radiation at the various lines of a molecular gain medium in a nondispersive cavity, and the consequences for line selection by injection in a TEA-CO2 laser are discussed.

Dissociative and double photoionization cross sections of NO from threshold to 120 A

The partial photoionization cross sections for producing the NO(+) parent ion and the O(+), N(+), and NO(2+) fragmentations from neutral NO are presented from 120 to 614 A. The results indicate predissociation of the 3 pi (21.72 eV) and B-prime 1Sigma(+) (22.73 eV) electronic states of NO(+). The photoionization threshold for double ionization was found to be 39.4 + or - 0.12 eV.

Magnetic two-photon scattering and two-photon emission - Cross sections and redistribution functions

The magnetic two-photon scattering cross section is discussed within the framework of QED, and the corresponding scattering redistribution function for this process and its inverse, as well as the scattering source function are calculated explicitly. In a similar way, the magnetic two-photon emission process which follows the radiative excitation of Landau levels above ground is calculated. The two-photon scattering and two-photon emission are of the same order as the single-photon magnetic scattering. All three of these processes, and in optically thick cases also their inverses, are included in radiative transport calculations modeling accreting pulsars and gamma-ray bursters. These processes play a prominent role in determining the relative strength of the first two cyclotron harmonics, and their effects extend also to the higher harmonics.

Time domain scattering and radar cross section calculations for a thin, coated perfectly conducting plate

Radar cross section (RCS) calculations for flat, perfectly conducting plates are readily available through the use of conventional frequency domain techniques such as the Method of Moments (MOM). However, if the plate is covered with a dielectric material that is relatively thick in comparison with the wavelength in the material, these frequency domain techniques become increasingly difficult to apply. We present the application of the Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) Technique to the problem of electromagnetic scattering and RCS calculations from a thin, perfectly conducting plate that is coated with a thick layer of lossless dielectric material. Both time domain and RCS calculations are presented and disclosed.
