Dynamics of E6 chiral gauge theories

We present exact nonperturbative vacuum solutions to chiral gauge theories based on the gauge group and several matter fermions in the fundamental -dimensional representation. They are obtained when supersymmetric versions are perturbed by small supersymmetry breaking by anomaly mediation. The universality classes obtained are very different from what can be conjectured by the tumbling hypothesis. In particular, the case with three may have an unbroken SU(3) symmetry with massless composite fermions in of SU(3). For this case, we employed numerical techniques to obtain the exact ground state.

Optimal observables for the chiral magnetic effect from machine learning

The detection of the chiral magnetic effect (CME) in relativistic heavy-ion collisions remains challenging due to substantial background contributions that obscure the expected signal. In this Letter, we present a novel machine learning approach for constructing optimized observables that significantly enhance CME detection capabilities. By parametrizing generic observables constructed from flow harmonics and optimizing them to maximize the signal-to-background ratio, we systematically develop CME-sensitive measures that outperform conventional methods. Using simulated data from the anomalous viscous fluid dynamics framework, our machine learning observables demonstrate up to 90% higher sensitivity to CME signals compared to traditional 𝛾 and 𝛿 correlators, while maintaining minimal background contamination. The constructed observables provide physical insight into optimal CME detection strategies and offer a promising path forward for experimental searches of the CME at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and the CERN Large Hadron Collider.

Instantons in chiral magnets

In this work, we exhaustively construct instanton solutions and elucidate their properties in one-dimensional antiferromagnetic chiral magnets based on the $\textit{O}(3)$ nonlinear sigma model description of spin chains with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction. By introducing an easy-axis potential and a staggered magnetic field, we obtain a phase diagram consisting of ground-state phases with two points (or one point) in the easy-axis dominant cases, a helical modulation at a fixed latitude of the sphere, and a tricritical point allowing helical modulations at an arbitrary latitude. We find that instantons (or skyrmions in two-dimensional Euclidean space) appear as composite solitons in different fashions in these phases: temporal domain walls or wall-antiwall pairs (bions) in the easy-axis dominant cases, dislocations (or phase slips called merons) with fractional instanton numbers in the helical state, and isolated instantons and calorons living on the top of the helical modulation at the tricritical point. We also show that the models with DM interaction and an easy-plane potential can be mapped into those without them, providing a useful tool to investigate the model with the DM interaction.

Magic-angle semimetals with chiral symmetry

Here, we construct and solve a two-dimensional, chirally symmetric model of Dirac cones subjected to a quasiperiodic modulation. In real space, this is realized with a quasiperiodic hopping term. This hopping model, as we show, at the Dirac node energy has a rich phase diagram with a semimetal-to-metal phase transition at intermediate amplitude of the quasiperiodic modulation, and a transition to a phase with a diverging density of states (DOS) and subdiffusive transport when the quasiperiodic hopping is strongest. We further demonstrate that the semimetal-to-metal phase transition can be characterized by the multifractal structure of eigenstates in momentum space and can be considered as a unique “unfreezing” transition. This unfreezing transition in momentum space generates flat bands with a dramatically renormalized bandwidth in the metallic phase similar to the phenomena of the band structure of twisted bilayer graphene at the magic angle. We characterize the nature of this transition numerically as well as analytically in terms of the formation of a band of topological zero modes. For pure quasiperiodic hopping, we provide strong numerical evidence that the low-energy DOS develops a divergence and the eigenstates exhibit Chalker (quantum-critical) scaling despite the model not being random. At particular commensurate limits the model realizes higher-order topological insulating phases. We discuss how these systems can be realized in experiments on ultracold atoms and metamaterials.

Nonlinear Hall effect in Weyl semimetals induced by chiral anomaly

In this work, we predict a nonlinear Hall effect in certain Weyl semimetals with broken inversion symmetry. When the energy dispersions about pairs of Weyl nodes are skewed-the Weyl cones are "tilted"-the concerted actions of the anomalous velocity and the chiral anomaly give rise to the nonlinear Hall effect. This Hall conductivity is linear in both electric and magnetic fields and depends critically on the tilting of the Weyl cones. We also show that this effect does not rely on a finite Berry curvature dipole, in contrast with the intrinsic quantum nonlinear Hall effect that was recently observed in type-II Weyl semimetals.

Effect of surface disorder on the chiral surface states of a three-dimensional quantum Hall system

We investigate the effect of surface disorder on the chiral surface states of a three-dimensional quantum Hall system. Utilizing a transfer-matrix method, we find that the localization length of the surface state along the magnetic field decreases with the surface disorder strength in the weak disorder regime but increases anomalously in the strong disorder regime. In the strong disorder regime, the surface states mainly locate at the first inward layer to avoid the strong disorder in the outmost layer. The anomalous increase of the localization length can be explained by an effective model, which maps the strong disorder on the surface layer to the weak disorder on the first inward layer. Our work demonstrates that surface disorder can be an effective way to control the transport behavior of the surface states along the magnetic field. We also investigate the effect of surface disorder on the full distribution of conductances P(g) of the surface states in the quasi-one-dimensional (1D) regime for various surface disorder strengths. In particular, we find that P(g) is Gaussian in the quasi-1D metal regime and log-normal in the quasi-1D insulator regime. In the crossover regime, P(g) exhibits highly nontrivial forms, whose shapes coincide with the results obtained from the Dorokhov-Mello-Pereyra-Kumar equation of a weakly disordered quasi-1D wire in the absence of time-reversal symmetry. Our results suggest that P(g) is fully determined by the average conductance, independent of the details of the system, in agreement with the single-parameter scaling hypothesis.

Observation of spontaneous x-ray magnetic circular dichroism in a chiral antiferromagnet

X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) signals are usually absent in antiferromagnets. In this paper, we report the observation of spontaneous XMCD spectra originating from the inverse triangular spin structure, or the polarization of the cluster magnetic octupole, in the chiral antiferromagnet Mn 3 Sn thin film. Finally, the result is consistent with the recent theoretical predictions that the inverse triangular spin structure can give rise to finite XMCD signals in the absence of net magnetization [J. Phys. Soc. Jpn 89, 083703 (2020) and Phys. Rev. Lett. 126, 157402 (2021)].

Disentangling electronic, lattice, and spin dynamics in the chiral helimagnet Cr 1/3 NbS 2

We investigate the static and ultrafast magneto-optical response of the hexagonal chiral helimagnet Cr 1/3 NbS 2 above and below the helimagnetic ordering temperature. The presence of a magnetic easy plane contained within the crystallographic $ab$-plane is confirmed, while degenerate optical pump-probe experiments reveal significant differences in the dynamic between the parent, NbS 2 , and Cr-intercalated compounds. Time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect measurements show a two-step demagnetization process, where an initial, subpicosecond relaxation and subsequent buildup (τ > 50ps) in the demagnetization dynamic scale similarly with increasing pump fluence. Despite theoretical evidence for partial gapping of the minority spin channel, suggestive of possible half-metallicity in Cr 1/3 NbS 2 , such a long demagnetization dynamic likely results from spin-lattice relaxation as opposed to minority state blocking. However, comparison of the two-step demagnetization process in Cr 1/3 NbS 2 with other 3d intercalated transition metal dichalcogenides reveals a behavior that is unexpected from conventional spin-lattice relaxation, and may be attributed to the complicated interaction of local moments with itinerant electrons in this material system.

Graviton chirality and topological order in the half-filled Landau level

The fractional quantum Hall state at the Landau level filling factor 5/2 is extremely interesting because it is likely the first non-Abelian state, but its precise nature remains unclear after decades of study. Here we demonstrate this can be resolved by studying the chirality of its graviton excitations, using circularly polarized Raman scattering. We discuss the advantage of this bulk probe over the existing edge probes.

Scar states in a system of interacting chiral fermions

Here, we study the nature of many-body eigenstates of a system of interacting chiral spinless fermions on a ring. We find a coexistence of fermionic and bosonic types of eigenstates in parts of the many-body spectrum. Some bosonic eigenstates, native to the strong interaction limit, persist at intermediate and weak couplings, enabling persistent density oscillations in the system, despite it being far from integrability.

Observation of broken inversion and chiral symmetries in the pseudogap phase in single- and double-layer bismuth-based cuprates

We deduce the symmetry of the pseudogap phase in the single- and double-layer bismuth-based cuprate superconductors, where charge and pseudogap order onset concurrently, by measuring and analyzing their circular and linear photogalvanic responses, which are related linearly to the chirality and inversion breaking, respectively, of the order parameter. After separating out the trivial contribution arising from the surface where inversion symmetry is already broken, we show that both responses start below the pseudogap temperature T* and grow below it to a sizable magnitude, revealing the broken symmetries in the bulk of the crystal. Through a detailed analysis of the dependence of the signals on the angle of incidence, the polarization of the light, and the orientation of the crystal, we are able to discover that the point group symmetry below T* is limited to mm2 or mm21– groups. Here, taking into account formation of domains and previous measurements, our results narrow down the possible symmetries of the microscopic origin of the phase transition(s) at T*, which leads to the conclusion that while charge order may affect the observed symmetry it is not the main cause of the pseudogap order parameter.

Coexistence of non-Abelian chiral spin liquid and magnetic order in a spin-1 antiferromagnet

We study the ground-state properties of a spin-1 Heisenberg model on a square lattice with the first- and second-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic couplings $J_1$ and $J_2$ and a three-spin scalar chirality term $J_\chi$. Using the density matrix renormalization group calculation, we map out a global phase diagram including various magnetic order phases and an emergent quantum spin liquid phase. The nature of the spin liquid is identified as a bosonic non-Abelian Moore-Read state from the fingerprint of the entanglement spectra and identification of a full set of topological sectors. We further unveil a stripe magnetic order coexisting with this spin liquid. Furthermore, our results not only establish a rare example of non-Abelian spin liquids in simple spin systems but also demonstrate the coexistence of fractionalized excitations and magnetic order beyond mean-field descriptions.

Elementary excitations of a system of one-dimensional chiral fermions with short-range interactions

Here, we study general features of the excitation spectrum of a system of one-dimensional chiral spinless fermions with short-range interactions. We show that the nature of the elementary excitations of such a system depends strongly on the nonlinearity of the underlying dispersion of the fermions. In the case of quadratic nonlinearity, the low-momentum excitations are essentially fermionic quasiparticles and quasiholes, whereas the high-momentum ones are classical harmonic waves and solitons. In the case of cubic nonlinearity, the nature of the elementary excitations does not depend on momentum and is determined by the strength of the interactions. At a certain critical value of the interaction strength, the excitation spectrum changes qualitatively, pointing to a dynamic phase transition in the system.

Nonperturbative constraints from symmetry and chirality on Majorana zero modes and defect quantum numbers in (2+1) dimensions

In (1+1)D topological phases, unpaired Majorana zero modes (MZMs) can arise only if the internal symmetry group G f of the ground state splits as G f = G b × $Z^f_2$, where $Z^f_2$ is generated by fermion parity, (–1) F . In contrast, (2+1)-dimensional [(2+1)D] topological superconductors (TSC) can host unpaired MZMs at defects even when G f is not of the form G b × $Z^f_2$. In this paper we study how G f together with the chiral central charge c – strongly constrain the existence of unpaired MZMs and the quantum numbers of symmetry defects. Our results utilize a recent algebraic characterization of (2+1)D invertible fermionic topological states, which provides a non-perturbative approach based on topological quantum field theory, beyond free fermions. We study physically relevant groups such as U(1) f $\rtimes$ H, SU (2) f × H, U(2) f $\rtimes$ H, generic Abelian groups, as well as more general compact Lie groups, antiunitary symmetries and crystalline symmetries. Further, we present an algebraic formula for the fermionic crystalline equivalence principle, which gives an equivalence between states with crystalline and internal symmetries. In light of our theory, we discuss several previously proposed realizations of unpaired MZMs in TSC materials such as Sr 2 RuO 4 , transition metal dichalcogenides and iron superconductors, in which crystalline symmetries are often important; in some cases we present additional predictions for the properties of these models.

Tunneling between two systems of interacting chiral fermions

Here, we develop a theory of tunneling between two systems of spinless chiral fermions. This setup can be realized at the edge of a quantum Hall bilayer structure. We find that the differential conductance of such a device in the absence of interactions has an infinitely sharp peak as a function of applied voltage. Interaction between fermions results in broadening of the conductance peak. We focus on the regime of strong interactions, in which the shape of the peak manifests well defined features associated with the elementary excitations of the system.

Chiral kinematic theory and converse vortical effects

Response theories in condensed matter typically describe the response of an electron fluid to external electromagnetic fields, while perturbations on neutral particles are often designed to mimic such fields. Here, we study the response of fermions to a space-time-dependent velocity field, thereby sidestepping the issue of gauge charge. First, we use a semiclassical chiral kinematic theory to obtain the local density of current and extract the orbital magnetization. The theory immediately predicts a "converse vortical effect," defined as an orbital magnetization driven by linear velocity. It receives contributions from magnetic moments on the Fermi surface and the Berry curvature of the occupied bands. Then, transcending semiclassics via a complementary Kubo formalism reveals that the uniform limit of a clean system receives only the Berry curvature contribution while other limits sense the Fermi surface magnetic moments too. We propose CoSi as a candidate material and suggest magnetometry of a sample under a thermal gradient to detect the effect. Overall, our study sheds light on the effects of a space-time-dependent velocity field on electron fluids and paves the way for exploring quantum materials using new probes and perturbations.

Complications in the interpretation of the charge-asymmetry-dependent π flow for the chiral magnetic wave

The charge asymmetry ($A_ch$) dependence of the $π^₋$ and $π^+$ elliptic flow difference, $Δv_2(A_{\text{ch}})$, has been regarded as a sensitive observable for the possible chiral magnetic wave (CMW) in relativistic heavy ion collisions. In this work, we first demonstrate that, due to nonflow backgrounds, the flow measurements by the Q-cumulant method using all charged particles as reference introduce a trivial linear term to $Δv_2(A_{\text{ch}})$. The trivial contribution to the slope of triangle flow difference $Δv_3( A_{\text{ch}})$ can be negative if the nonflow is dominated by back-to-back pairs. After eliminating the trivial term, we find that the nonflow between like-sign pairs gives rise to an additional positive slope to $Δv_2(A_{\text{ch}})$ because of the larger multiplicity dilution to $π^+$ ($π^₋$) at positive (negative) $A_{\text{ch}}$. We further find that the competition between different π sources can introduce another nontrivial linear-$A_{\text{ch}}$ term due to their different multiplicity fluctuations and anisotropic flows. We then study the effect of neutral cluster (resonance) decays as a mechanism for local charge conservation on the slope parameter of $Δv_2(A_{\text{ch}})$. We find that the slope parameter is sensitive to the kinematics of those neutral clusters. Light resonances give positive slopes while heavy resonances give negative slopes. Local charge conservation from continuum cluster mass distribution can give a positive slope parameter comparable to experimental data. Our studies indicate that many non-CMW physics mechanisms can give rise to a $A_{\text{ch}}$-dependent $Δv_2(A_{\text{ch}})$ and the interpretation of $Δv_2(A_{\text{ch}})$ in terms of the CMW is delicate.

Back-to-back relative-excess observable to identify the chiral magnetic effect

Background: The chiral magnetic effect (CME) is extensively studied in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and LHC. In the commonly used reaction-plane (RP)-dependent, charge-dependent azimuthal correlator ($Δ_γ$), both the close and back-to-back pairs are included. Many backgrounds contribute to the close pairs (e.g., resonance decays, jet correlations), whereas the back-to-back pairs are relatively free of those backgrounds. Purpose: In order to reduce those backgrounds, we propose a new observable, which only focuses on the back-to-back pairs, namely, the relative back-to-back opposite-sign over same-sign pair excess ($r_{BB}$) as a function of the pair azimuthal orientation with respect to the RP ($φ_{BB}$). Methods: We use analytical calculations and toy model simulations to demonstrate the sensitivity of $r_{BB}(φ_{BB})$ to the CME and its insensitivity to backgrounds. Results: With finite CME, the $φ_{BB}$ distribution of $r_{BB}$ shows a clear characteristic modulation. Its sensitivity to background is significantly reduced compared to the previous $Δ_γ$ observable. The simulation results are consistent with our analytical calculations. Conclusions: In this work, our studies demonstrate that the $r_{BB}(φ_{BB})$ observable is sensitive to the CME signal and rather insensitive to the resonance backgrounds.
