Preliminary modeling of high pressure partial melting - Implications for early lunar differentiation

A quantitative model is presented for equilibrium crystallization of lunar magmas at high pressure, which, viewed in reverse, is equivalent to equilibrium partial melting. Data are extrapolated from simple systems, mare basalt systems, and from experiments on terrestrial compositions. Liquidus phase equilibria in a portion of the CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 system serve as a guide for predicting phase equilibria in the natural system. High pressure partial melting sequences are calculated for several proposed whole moon compositions at nominal pressure of 10 and 20 kb. Results show that compositions with chondritic Ca/Al have quite different melting paths from those with subchondritic Ca/Al, and as a result the types of magmas produced are quite different. If the moon possesses a chondritic Ca/Al ratio, models which rely on small degrees of partial melting to produce the early lunar magnetism are suspect.

Lunar anorthosite 60025, the petrogenesis of lunar anorthosites, and the composition of the moon

The mineral chemistry of the lunar anorthosite 60025 is investigated, and a model for the differentiation of the moon is proposed based on these findings. Among other results, it is concluded that 60025 is a mixture of pieces from a related sequence of anorthosites, and that this sequence was generated by near-perfect accumulate growth during strong fractional crystallization. The parent liquid of the most primitive anorthosite was saturated with olivine, plagioclase, pigeonite, and chromite, and evolved to one saturated with plagioclase, pigeonite, high-Ca clinopyroxene, and ilmenite. The steep slope of anorthosites on an Mg (mafics) vs. Ab (plagioclase) diagram is a result of the very low alkali content of the magma and of the original magma ocean. The bulk moon had low Al2O3, a sub-chondritic Ca/Al ratio, and REE abundances and patterns which were probably close to chondritic. In addition, mare basalt sources were found to be too magnesian and some contain too much high Ca clinopyroxene to be directly or simply complementary to a floated anorthosite crust.

Flight performance summary for three NASA Terrier-Malemute II sounding rockets

The subject of this paper is the presentation of flight data for three Terrier-Malemute II sounding rocket vehicles. The Malemute motor was modified by adding insulation and using a propellant that produced less Al2O3 agglomerate in the chamber. This modification, designated Malemute II, reduced the sensitivity of the motor to the roll rate induced motor case burnthrough experienced on some earlier Malemute flights. Two flight tests, including a single stage Malemute II and a Terrier-Malemute II, were made by Sandia to qualify this modification. The three NASA operational flights that are the subject of this paper were made using the modified Malemute II motors.

Mechanisms of devitrification of grain boundary glassy phases in Si3N4 materials

Changes in the grain boundary (g.b.) phases of Si3N4 are analyzed, the effects of composition and thermal history on devitrification of the g.b. phases are determined, devitrification of the g.b. phases of Si3N are related to mechanical behavior and oxidation sensitivity of the material. The phase relationships that occur within the grain boundaries of Si3N4 containing various densification aids are reviewed. Comparisons of the effects of MgO, Y2O3, CeO2, and Y2O3 + AL2O3 are made in terms of the phase equilibria of the Si3N4 + SiO2 + additive compositional system. Two new equilibrium phase diagrams for the Si3N4-SiO2 and Y2O3 and Si3N4-SiO2-Ce2O3 systems are preented. The effects of Y2O3 vs CeO2 densification aids on the fracture surfaces of Si3N4 are compared. Auger electron spectroscopy shows that both oxides are concentrated within the fracture surface. Scanning electron microscopy shows evidence that Si3N4 with CeO2 formed an intergranular structure of fine grained oxynitride reaction products, as predicted by phase quilibria, whereas the Y2O3 containing sample shows evidence of an intergranular glassy phase.

Containerless high temperature property measurements by atomic fluorescence

The use of laser induced fluorescence (LIF) techniques for containerless study of high temperature processes and material properties is studied. Gas jet and electromagnetic levitation and electromagnetic and laser heating techniques are used with LIF in Earth-based containerless high temperature experiments. The work to date includes development of an apparatus and its use in studies of chemical reactions on Al2O3, molybdenum, and tungsten specimens, novel methods for noncontact specimen temperature measurement, and levitation jet properties. Brief summaries of these studies are given. The apparatus is described and detailed results for the current reporting period are presented.

Theoretical prediction of phase relationships in planetary mantles

Thermodynamic and phase equilibrium data are used to generate an internally consistent set of enthalpies and entropies for important components of the CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 (CMAS) system in silica-undersaturated compositions. The addition of Na and Fe(2+) to the CMAS system produces shifts in the plagioclase, spinel and garnet stability fields. While the Morgan and Anders (1979) model Martian composition has stability fields of plagioclase and garnet lherzolite, and a small spinel lherzolite field at temperatures below 900 C, the Martian mantle composition of McGetchin and Smyth (1978) would not contain orthopyroxene, and a low pressure assemblage of plagioclase-spinel wehrlite would be replaced by garnet-spinel wehrlite at higher pressure. In both cases, the Fe-Mg ratio would be substantially greater than that found in primitive terrestrial basalts.

Experimental determination of the spinel-garnet boundary in a Martian mantle composition

The high pressure reaction orthopyroxene + clinopyroxene + spinel to garnet + olivine is applicable to the mantle of Mars. Experimental reversals of this reaction in the system CaO-MgO-FeO-Al2O3-SiO2 have been made in the range 1000-1200 C using the bulk composition proposed by Morgan and Anders (1980). At 1000 C, 1100 C, and 1200 C the garnet-out equilibrium is bracketed at 10.8 + or - 0.5, 12.6 + or - 0.5, and 15.2 + or - 0.5 kbars, respectively. A dP/dT slope of 14.0 bar/K at 1000 C increasing to 26.0 bar/K at 1200 C has been inferred. Depending on bulk composition, the mantle of Mars is inferred to have a phase assemblage of either olivine + clinopyroxene + orthopyroxene + garnet or olivine + clinopyroxene + garnet + spinel. In the second, the partial melts will not be buffered by olivine and orthopyroxene and will have markedly lower silica activities than those of the terrestrial mantle.

Experimental evaluation of a ruby maser at 43 GHz

Inversion ratio measurements were conducted at several frequencies between 27 and 43 GHz for a pink ruby material (0.05% Cr/3+/ in Al2O3) at the push-pull pump angle of 54.7 degrees in order to determine the upper frequency limit where pink ruby could be expected to operate as a practical maser amplifier. Based on these measurements, a single-stage maser was developed which yielded 8 + or - 1 dB net gain and a 3 dB bandwidth of 180 MHz at a center frequency of 42.5 GHz. It is concluded that a multistage reflected wave maser could achieve bandwidths exceeding 1 GHz with 30 dB net gain at center frequencies near 40 GHz.

Viscous flow behavior of four iron-containing silicates with alumina, effects of composition and oxidation condition

The viscosity of a magma is an important parameter in connection with its effect on geologic processes such as melt segregation, magma vesiculation, and crystal fractionation. Though most models of geologic processes assume relatively low values for the magma viscosity less than 10,000 poise, it would be useful to have an empirical model for estimating viscosities when the process occurs during continuous cooling to a temperature region where the viscosity is expected to be very high. The considered work has been carried out to provide the experimental measurements of viscosity at low temperatures which would be used in formulating the empirical model. Ten iron-containing silicate compositions have been investigated by Klein et al. (1981), and four of these compositions have been selected for the present study with alumina. The study involves substitutions of Al2O3 for FeOx at Na2O/Al2O3 moles greater than one. For the four iron-containing silicate glasses with alumina, the viscosity at a given temperature is found to increase with increasing (Fe + Al).

The lunar regolith - Chemistry, mineralogy, and petrology

The data base on the lunar regolith is surveyed to form a synthesis of the lunar regolith chemistry, mineralogy, and petrology. The data were derived from samples collected by the Apollo missions 11-17 and the Luna 16, 20, and 24 probes. The missions were sent to sample formations and areas which typified the common observed features of the lunar surface. Drive tubes were used to extract samples from beneath the surface in order to study the relationship between the regolith and the bedrock, as well as to identify the processes that formed the regolith, which is regarded as the prime source of raw materials for early lunar industrial activities. Regolith origins are now understood to be destructive processes of comminution and constructional processes of agglutinate formation. Mixing occurs on the local scale, although lateral transport is inefficient on the moon. The usual contents of the fraction of regolith less than 10 microns in diameter are Al2O3, CaO, Na2O, K2O, light REE, and Th.

Origin of Archean anorthosites - Evidence from the Bad Vermilion Lake anorthosite complex, Ontario

Studies of the petrology and geochemistry of the anorthosite complex at Bad Vermillion Lake, Canada, based on 400 samples collected in summer, 1979, are presented. Petrographic, microprobe, X-ray-fluorescence, and instrumental-neutron-activation analyses were performed. Major and trace-element abundances of the anorthositic rocks and surrounding mafic and felsic rocks are reported in tables, chondrite-normalized rare-earth-element patterns are shown, and the anorthositic, intrusive, and metavolcanic formations are characterized in detail. The anothrositic plagioclases are found to have a coarse porphyritic texture and calcic composition (80 normative mol percent An) similar to those of other Archean anorthosite complexes. Chemical similarities indicate that the gabbro and mafic to felsic metavolcanic formations associated with the anorthosite complex may be comagmatic with it, while the absence of ultramafic material and the bulk composition of the comagmatic basalt (about 20 wt percent Al2O3) suggest that much of the original comagmatic material has been separated.

Sintering, properties and fabrication of Si3N4 + Y2O3 based ceramics

Pure silicon nitride shows a remarkable resistance to sintering without the use of densification additives. The present investigation is concerned with results which show the effect of chemical content on sinterability, taking into account the composition, raw material impurities, and processing contaminants. Aspects of sintering are discussed along with strength characteristics, and oxidation relations. Attention is given to phase field I and II materials, phase field III and IV materials, tungsten carbide and oxidation at 600 C, and studies involving shape fabrication by injection molding. It was found that in sintering Si3N4 + Y2O3 an increase in the amount of Y2O3 and, in particular, the addition of Al2O3 enhances the fluidity of the liquid phase.

Crystallization of the glassy phase of grain boundaries in silicon nitride

Three types of hot-pressed silicon nitride specimens (containing 5wt% Y2O3 and 2wt% Al2O3 additives) which were subjected to different temperature heat treatments were studied by X-ray diffraction, X-ray microanalysis and high resolution electron microscopy. The results indicated that there were phase changes in the grain boundaries after heat treatment and the glassy phase at the grain boundaries was crystallized by heat treatment.

Sputtered coatings for protection of spacecraft polymers

Kapton polyimide oxidizes at significant rates (4.3x10(-24) gram/incident oxygen atom) when exposed in low Earth orbit to the ram atomic oxygen flux. Ion beam sputter deposited thin films of Al2O3 and SiO2 as well as a codeposited mixture of predominantly SiO2 with a small amount of polytetrafluoroethylene were evaluated and found to be effective in protecting Kapton from oxidation in both laboratory plasma ashing tests as well as in space on board shuttle flight STS-8. A protective film of or = 96 percent SiO2 and or = 4 percent polytetrafluoroethylene was found to be very flexible compared to the pure metal oxide coatings and resulted in mass loss rates that were 0.2 percent of that of the unprotected Kapton. The optical properties of Kapton for wavelengths investigated between 0.33 and 2.2 microns were not significantly altered by the presence of the coatings or changed by exposure of the coated Kapton to the low Earth orbital ram environment.

Integrating IR detector imaging systems

An integrating IR detector array for imaging is provided in a hybrid circuit with InSb mesa diodes in a linear array, a single J-FET preamplifier for readout, and a silicon integrated circuit multiplexer. Thin film conductors in a fan out pattern deposited on an Al2O3 substrate connect the diodes to the multiplexer, and thick film conductors also connect the reset switch and preamplifier to the multiplexer. Two phase clock pulses are applied with a logic return signal to the multiplexer through triax comprised of three thin film conductors deposited between layers. A lens focuses a scanned image onto the diode array for horizontal read out while a scanning mirror provides vertical scan.
