The enigmatic Galactic Center excess: Spurious point sources and signal mismodeling

The Galactic Center GeV excess (GCE) has garnered great interest as a possible signal of either dark matter annihilation or some novel astrophysical phenomenon, such as a new population of gamma-ray emitting pulsars. In a companion paper, we showed that in a 10° radius region of interest (ROI) surrounding the Galactic Center, apparent evidence for GCE point sources (PSs) from non-Poissonian template fitting (NPTF) is actually an artifact of unmodeled north-south asymmetry of the GCE. In this work, we develop a simplified analytic description of how signal mismodeling can drive an apparent preference for a PS population, and demonstrate how the behavior pointed out in the companion paper also appears in simpler simulated datasets that contain no PS signals at all. We explore the generality of this behavior in the real gamma-ray data, and discuss the implications for past and future studies using NPTF techniques. While the drop in PS preference once north-south asymmetry is included is not ubiquitous in larger ROIs, we show that any overly-rigid signal model is expected to yield a spurious PS signal that can appear very convincing: as well as apparent significance comparable to what one would expect from a true PS population, the signal can exhibit stability against a range of variations in the analysis, and a source count function that is very consistent with previous apparent NPTF-based detections of a GCE PS population. This contrasts with previously studied forms of systematic mismodeling which are unlikely to mimic a PS population in the same way. Finally, in the light of this observation, and its explicit realization in the region where the GCE is brightest, we argue that a dominantly smooth origin for the GCE is not in tension with existing NPTF analyses.

Angular analysis of the low K + K – invariant mass enhancement in B + →K + K – π + decays

We study the decay B + →K + K – π + and investigate the angular distribution of K + K – pairs with invariant mass below 1.1 GeV / c 2 . This region exhibits both a strong enhancement in signal and very large direct CP violation. We construct a coherent sum model for the angular distribution of the S- and P-wave, and report the ratio of their amplitudes, the relative phase and the forward-backward asymmetry. We also report absolute differential branching fractions and direct CP asymmetry for the decay in bins of M K+K– and the differential branching fractions in bins of M K+π– . The results are based on a data sample that contains 772 × 10 6 $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $Υ$(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e + e – collider. The result favors the presence of S- and D-waves in low M K+K– region to the detriment of a P-wave.

Measurement of the branching fraction and search for CP violation in D 0 → K $^{0}_{S}$ K $^{0}_{S}$ ⁢π + ⁢π - decays at Belle

We measure the branching fraction for the Cabibbo-suppressed decay D 0 → K $^{0}_{S}$ K $^{0}_{S}$ ⁢π + ⁢π - and search for CP violation via a measurement of the CP asymmetry A CP as well as the T-odd triple-product asymmetry a$^{T}_{CP}$. We use 922 fb -1 of data recorded by the Belle experiment, which ran at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e + ⁢e - collider. The branching fraction is measured relative to the Cabibbo-favored normalization channel D 0 → K $^{0}_{S}$ ⁢π + ⁢π - ; the result is $\mathscr{B}$⁡( D 0 → K $^{0}_{S}$ K $^{0}_{S}$ ⁢π + ⁢π - )=[4.79±0.08⁢(stat)±0.10⁢(syst)±0.31⁢(norm)]×10 -4 , where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third is from uncertainty in the normalization channel. We also measure A CP =[-2.51±1.44⁢(stat)$^{+0.11}_{-0.10}$⁢(syst)]%, and a$^{T}_{CP}$=[-1.95±1.42⁢(stat)$^{+0.14}_{-0.12}⁢$(syst)]%. These results show no evidence of CP violation.

Search for CP violation using $\hat{T}$-odd correlations in $B^0→p⁢\overline{p}K^{+}⁢\pi^-$ decays

A search for CP and P violation in charmless four-body B 0 → p$\overline{p}$K + ⁢π – decays is performed using triple-product asymmetry observables. It is based on proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 8.4 fb –1 . The CP- and P-violating asymmetries are measured both in the integrated phase space and in specific regions. No evidence is seen for CP violation. P-parity violation is observed at a significance of 5.8 standard deviations.

Measurement of the production of a $W$ boson in association with a charmed hadron in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = $\mathrm{13 TeV}$ with the ATLAS detector

The production of a $W$ boson in association with a single charm quark is studied using 140 fb –1 of $\sqrt{s}$ = $13$ $\mathrm{TeV}$ proton-proton collision data collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The charm quark is tagged by the presence of a charmed hadron reconstructed with a secondary-vertex fit. The $W$ boson is reconstructed from the decay to either an electron or a muon and the missing transverse momentum present in the event. The charmed mesons reconstructed are D + → K – π + π + and D *+ → D 0 π + → (K – π + ) π + and the charge conjugate decays in the fiducial regions where $p$ T ($e,μ$) > 30 GeV, |$η(e,μ)$| < 2.5, $p$ T (D (*) ) > 8 GeV, and |$η$(D (*) )| < 2.2. The integrated and normalized differential cross sections as a function of the pseudorapidity of the lepton from the $W$ boson decay, and of the transverse momentum of the charmed hadron, are extracted from the data using a profile likelihood fit. The measured total fiducial cross sections are ${σ}_{fid}^{OS – SS}$ (W – + D + ) = 50.2 ± 0.2 ${(stat)}_{–2.3}^{+2.4}$(syst) pb, ${σ}_{fid}^{OS – SS}$ (W + + D – ) = 48.5 ± 0.2 ${(stat)}_{–2.2}^{+2.3}$(syst) pb, ${σ}_{fid}^{OS – SS}$ (W – + D *+ ) = 51.1 ± 0.4 ${(stat)}_{–1.8}^{+1.9}$(syst) pb, ${σ}_{fid}^{OS – SS}$ (W + + D *– ) = 50.0 ± 0.4 ${(stat)}_{–1.8}^{+1.9}$(syst) pb. Results are compared with the predictions of next-to-leading-order quantum chromodynamics calculations performed using state-of-the-art parton distribution functions. Additionally, the ratio of charm to anticharm production cross sections is studied to probe the $s$-$\bar{s}$ quark asymmetry. The ratio is found to be ${R}_{c}^{±}$= 0.971 ± 0.006 (stat) ± 0.011 (syst). The ratio and cross-section measurements are consistent with the predictions obtained with parton distribution function sets that have a symmetric $s$-$\bar{s}$ sea, indicating that any $s$-$\bar{s}$ asymmetry in the Bjorken-x region relevant for this measurement is small.

Axion cogenesis without isocurvature perturbations

Axion rotations can simultaneously explain the dark matter abundance and the baryon asymmetry of the Universe by kinetic misalignment and axiogenesis. We consider a scenario in which the Peccei-Quinn symmetry breaking field is as large as the Planck scale during inflation and the axion rotation is initiated by the inflaton-induced potential immediately after the end of inflation. This is a realization of the cogenesis scenario that is free of problems with domain walls and isocurvature perturbations thanks to large explicit Peccei-Quinn symmetry breaking at the Planck scale during inflation. The baryon asymmetry can be more efficiently produced by leptoaxiogenesis, in which case the axion mass is predicted to be larger than O⁡(0.1) meV. We also discuss a UV complete model in supersymmetric theories.

Azimuthal angular correlation of J/ψ plus jet production at the electron-ion collider

By investigating the soft gluon radiation in the J/ψ plus jet photoproduction at the electron-ion collider (EIC), we demonstrate that the azimuthal angular correlations between the leading jet and heavy quarkonium provide a unique probe to the production mechanism of the latter. In particular, a significant cos⁡(φ) asymmetry is found for the color-singlet channel, whereas it vanishes or has an opposite sign for color-octet production, depending on the jet transverse momentum. Numerical results of cos⁡(φ) and cos⁡(2⁢φ) asymmetries employing both the color-singlet model and the nonrelativistic QCD approach are presented for typical kinematics at the future EIC.

Up and down quark structure of the proton

We report an improved measurement of the valence u and d quark distributions from the forward-backward asymmetry in the Drell-Yan process using 8.6 fb − 1 of data collected with the D0 detector in p p ¯ collisions at s = 1.96 . This analysis provides the values of new structure parameters that are directly related to the valence up and down quark distributions in the proton. In other experimental results measuring the quark content of the proton, d quark contributions are mixed with those from other quark flavors. In this measurement, the u and d quark contributions are separately extracted by applying a factorization of the QCD and electroweak portions of the forward-backward asymmetry. Observation of time-dependent C P violation and measurement of the branching fraction of B 0 → J / ψ π 0 decays

We present a measurement of the branching fraction and time-dependent charge-parity ( C P ) decay-rate asymmetries in B 0 → J / ψ π 0 decays. The data sample was collected with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB asymmetric e + e − collider in 2019–2022 and contains ( 387 ± 6 ) × 10 6 B B ¯ meson pairs from ϒ ( 4 S ) decays. We reconstruct 392 ± 24 signal decays and fit the C P parameters from the distribution of the proper-decay-time difference of the two B mesons. We measure the branching fraction to be ( B 0 → J / ψ π 0 ) = ( 2.00 ± 0.12 ± 0.09 ) × 10 − 5 and the direct and mixing-induced C P asymmetries to be C C P = 0.13 ± 0.12 ± 0.03 and S C P = − 0.88 ± 0.17 ± 0.03 , respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. We observe mixing-induced C P violation with a significance of 5.0 standard deviations for the first time in this mode. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

New strategies for new physics search with Λ b → Λ ν ν ¯ decays

We examine the new physics sensitivity of the rare decay Λ b → Λ ν ν ¯ , which can be accessible at future Z -pole machines like Future Circular Collider and Circular Electron Positron Collider. We find that the longitudinal polarization of Λ b baryons produced in Z decays introduces a novel observable, the forward-backward asymmetry A FB ↑ in the angle between the outgoing Λ momentum and the Λ b spin. We provide Standard Model predictions for the Λ b → Λ ν ν ¯ branching ratio and A FB ↑ , and show that future precision measurements of these observables are complementary and probe new physics scales comparable to other b → s ν ν ¯ and b → s ℓ + ℓ − processes. We also show that the zero crossing of the forward-backward asymmetry offers a robust test of form factor calculations independent of new physics. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Active nematic ratchet in asymmetric obstacle arrays

We numerically investigate the effect of an asymmetric periodic obstacle array in a two-dimensional active nematic. We find that activity in conjunction with the asymmetry leads to a ratchet effect or unidirectional flow of the fluid along the asymmetry direction. The directional flow is still present even in the active turbulent phase when the gap between obstacles is sufficiently small. We demonstrate that the dynamics of the topological defects transition from flow mirroring to smectic-like as the gap between obstacles is made smaller, and explain this transition in terms of the pinning of negative winding number defects between obstacles. This also leads to a nonmonotonic ratchet effect magnitude as a function of obstacle size, so that there is an optimal obstacle size for ratcheting at fixed activity.

Spurious Point Source Signals in the Galactic Center Excess

We reexamine evidence that the Galactic Center Excess (GCE) originates primarily from point sources (PSs). Here, we show that in our region of interest, non-Poissonian template fitting evidence for GCE PSs is an artifact of unmodeled north-south asymmetry of the GCE. This asymmetry is strongly favored by the fit (although it is unclear if this is physical), and when it is allowed, the preference for PSs becomes insignificant. We reproduce this behavior in simulations, including detailed properties of the spurious PS population. We conclude that the non-Poissonian template fitting evidence for GCE PSs is highly susceptible to certain systematic errors and should not at present be taken to robustly disfavor a dominantly smooth GCE.

Bloch Chirality Induced by an Interlayer Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction in Ferromagnetic Multilayers

Chiral spin textures stabilized by the interfacial Dzyaloshinkii-Moriya interaction, such as skyrmions and homochiral domain walls, have been shown to exhibit qualities that make them attractive for their incorporation in a variety of spintronic devices. However, for thicker multilayer films, mixed textures occur in which an achiral Bloch component coexists with a chiral Néel component of the domain wall to reduce the demagnetization field at the film surface. We show that an interlayer Dzyaloshinkii-Moriya interaction can break the degeneracy between Bloch chiralities. We further find large population asymmetries and chiral branching in the Bloch component of the domain walls in well-ordered Co/Pd multilayers. This asymmetry is a result of the combined effect of the demagnetization field and an interlayer Dzyaloshinkii-Moriya interaction, and is strongly related to film thickness and structural ordering. This work paves the way toward the utilization of this effect toward controlling Bloch chirality in magnetic multilayers.

Model-Free Measurement of Local Entropy Production and Extractable Work in Active Matter

Time-reversal symmetry breaking and entropy production are universal features of nonequilibrium phenomena. Despite its importance in the physics of active and living systems, the entropy production of systems with many degrees of freedom has remained of little practical significance because the high dimensionality of their state space makes it difficult to measure. Here, in this work, we introduce a local measure of entropy production and a numerical protocol to estimate it. We establish a connection between the entropy production and extractability of work in a given region of the system and show how this quantity depends crucially on the degrees of freedom being tracked. We validate our approach in theory, simulation, and experiments by considering systems of active Brownian particles undergoing motility-induced phase separation, as well as active Brownian particles and E.coli in a rectifying device in which the time-reversal asymmetry of the particle dynamics couples to spatial asymmetry to reveal its effects on a macroscopic scale.

Precision Mass Measurement of the Proton Dripline Halo Candidate 22 Al

Here, we report the first mass measurement of the proton-halo candidate 22 Al performed with the low energy beam ion trap facility’s 9.4 T Penning trap mass spectrometer at facility for rare isotope beams. This measurement completes the mass information for the lightest remaining proton-dripline nucleus achievable with Penning traps. 22 Al has been the subject of recent interest regarding a possible halo structure from the observation of an exceptionally large isospin asymmetry [J. Lee et al ., Large isospin asymmetry in Si22/O22 Mirror Gamow-Teller transitions reveals the halo structure of 22 Al , Phys. Rev. Lett. 125, 192503 (2020).]. The measured mass excess value of ME=18 092.5⁢(3) keV, corresponding to an exceptionally small proton separation energy of 𝑆𝑝=100.4⁢(8) keV, is compatible with the suggested halo structure. Our result agrees well with predictions from 𝑠⁢𝑑-shell USD Hamiltonians. While USD Hamiltonians predict deformation in the 22 Al ground state with minimal 1⁢𝑠 1/2 occupation in the proton shell, a particle-plus-rotor model in the continuum suggests that a proton halo could form at large quadrupole deformation. These results emphasize the need for a charge radius measurement to conclusively determine the halo nature.

Measurement of C P Violation Observables in D + → K − K + π + Decays

A search for violation of the charge-parity ( C P ) symmetry in the D + → K − K + π + decay is presented, with proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb − 1 , collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with the LHCb detector. A novel model-independent technique is used to compare the D + and D − phase-space distributions, with instrumental asymmetries subtracted using the D s + → K − K + π + decay as a control channel. The p value for the hypothesis of C P conservation is 8.1%. The C P asymmetry observables A C P | S ϕ π + = ( 0.95 ± 0.4 3 stat ± 0.2 6 syst ) × 10 − 3 and A C P | S K ¯ * 0 K + = ( − 0.26 ± 0.5 6 stat ± 0.1 8 syst ) × 10 − 3 are also measured. These results show no evidence of C P violation and represent the most sensitive search performed through the phase space of a multibody decay. © 2024 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2024 CERN

Study of Λ b 0 and Ξ b 0 Decays to Λ h + h ′ − and Evidence for C P Violation in Λ b 0 → Λ K + K − Decays

A study of Λ b 0 and Ξ b 0 decays to Λ h + h ′ − ( h ( ′ ) = π , K ) is performed using p p collision data collected by the LHCb experiment during LHC Runs 1–2, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb − 1 . The branching fractions for these decays are measured using the Λ b 0 → Λ c + ( → Λ π + ) π − decay as a control channel. The decays Λ b 0 → Λ π + π − and Ξ b 0 → Λ K − π + are observed for the first time. For decay modes with sufficient signal yields, C P asymmetries are measured in the full and localized regions of the final-state phase space. Evidence is found for C P violation in the Λ b 0 → Λ K + K − decay, interpreted as originating primarily from an asymmetric Λ b 0 → N * + K − decay amplitude. The measured C P asymmetries for other decays are compatible with zero. © 2025 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2025 CERN

Ablating Pellets for Areal Density Symmetry Control in Indirectly Driven Inertial Confinement Fusion Target Designs

Asymmetry of the compressed fusion fuel configuration, as characterized by a variation in areal density, in inertial confinement fusion (ICF) implosions is a known performance limitation. While ignition has been achieved on the National Ignition Facility (NIF), implosion symmetry was not perfect, and subsequent experiments that have extended fusion performance still struggle with symmetry control and would, in principle, perform much better if the areal density uniformity of the fuel was improved by eliminating thin regions in the DT (Deuterium-Tritium) fuel that develop by the time of peak compression. In indirect drive (IDD), altering the time-dependent laser cone fraction and cross-beam energy transfer are the usual tactics for controlling implosion asymmetry in IDD target designs, but it may be that those tools have been pushed to their limits. In this Letter, we present a new tactic for controlling the implosion using satellite ablating pellets to manipulate the time-dependent x-ray field around an ICF capsule. In theory and in simulations the action of these pellets is quite effective at reducing the swing of x-ray drive from waist hot to pole hot, thus achieving a more one-dimensional fuel configuration at peak compression. Simulations show that a factor of ∼2 in yield performance can be obtained via this technique, when applied to past record implosions on the NIF. As a result, some speculative alternate uses of the proposed target concept are also mentioned in the conclusion of this Letter.
